Give me Cunningham over Mellish any day of the week.

I liken Steve Mellish’s overly loquacious and befuddled style to a that of teenager’s bedroom. A bit of mess and requiring immediate tidying up.

Cunningham’s comments and observations seem more assured and to the point.

The Observer’s loss. Maybe there’s a slot for him on the Racing Post 8) – if he fancies it.

As I was driving back home this morning I thought someone would correct me on my guess as to the annual costs of purchasing the Racing Post every day.

The fact remains that during these harsh economic times when less and less copies are sold every day does it make sense to provide a free website where one can easily find most of the features that are in the printed version for nothing.

Are the management ‘shooting themselves in the foot’?

If just 2,000 stop purchasing the Racing Post every day , but were still able to obtain most of the features for nothing on line day after day thats around a £1.298,000 loss of revenue per year.

The paper and the website should be viewed separately though IMO

The features (by which I mean journalist’s articles) are not available free online – only the stats are, and those self-same stats are available freely on the internet elsewhere

Perhaps the company makes money on the website through advertising but loses on the print version due to exhorbitant salaries paid to writers! :D

You would need to see the overall costs associated with producing the paper and compare them to sales volumes to make a true judgement on the viability of the actual newspaper itself.

Charging more for Product A to compensate for losses in Product B doesn’t change the fact that Product B is not a viable product and will ultimately push Product A down the same path.

Why do you buy the paper every day Seagull if the info is free online?

In a little world populated in the main by charlatans and publicity-craving self-appointed ‘experts’ I must say I find it strange that one of the very few who patently isn’t one of those – Eddie Fremantle – is nevertheless subjected to denigration by some on here.

I normally couldn’t give a hoot who the presenters and pundits are on RUK, as I’m only there for the racing but a ‘good-oh’ is whispered when the Harry Potteresque EF steps forward and squints at the screen: an invariably pleasant afternoon spent in the company of a calm, mannered and thoughtful race analyst.

Unlike most of his racing-hack peer group a

    proven

punter, as all those who have trodden the turf over the last twenty years or so will be aware. And so too no doubt are Coral’s odds-compilers :)

It is not about obtaining something for free overall it saves time and at £1.60 a weekday it is well worth the time and inconveniance of not having to be trawling through the website.

Im an Observer reader and liked eddies pieces but always struck me that he would be better served by more space. His writing was essentially more betting orientated than say commentary (ala alan lee) and is that really geared to to average observer readers?

At the same time The Observer have hired the dull and uninspiring miserable Manc Paul Hayward as cheif writer,,,

Good article on the impact of Betfair in today’s paper. His National thoughts are there as well. Real shame if its his last input to the paper.

The first sentence is absolutely priceless! I have followed his Grand National tips for years, but have never before studied the race in such depth before, so it has been a real eye opener to see how much time and effort goes into it, especially as 3 months of study has reduced my short list to @ 12 and counting! I just hope that Rambling Minster wins next week, not just for Eddie the Shoe, but also for the horses connections; Mary Reveley, to me, being one of racings unsung heroines.

Top-class article. Agree completely that it will be a pity if it’s Eddie’s last.

Surprised it hasn’t got a mention on here, but I think Eddie Fremantle, who wrote his first column today, is an excellent signing by the Racing Post.

Knows his form inside out and can write – a surprisingly rare combination…

    Gulf Punch

    9.10 Wolverhampton

    1pt each-way at 40-1 generally

The 9.10 at Wolverhampton looks a tricky heat with unexposed contenders The Bay Bandit, Destiny’s Dancer and Jigajig, all with connections that know the time of day, coming in for early support, writes Eddie Fremantle.

At much bigger odds, my eye is drawn to Gulf Punch, who has dropped to a basement handicap mark despite some fair efforts in nurseries in the autumn. She was placed for Richard Hannon here before joining Milton Harris so the ability to act on this surface is not in doubt, whilst she was off considerably higher marks when in mid-division in good nurseries at Epsom and Bath in September.

A reproduction of either of those efforts would see her reach the frame at least and there is plenty of juice in the price.

Their gain is The Observers loss, sadly. I am a fully paid up member of the Eddie the Shoe fan club and followed his Grand National tips for years. I fact, I’m about to celebrate [or rather mourn] his departure almost a year to the day.

One of the few tipsters/pundits I make a point of listening to. As you say, a good signing.
