I know where I would have been if STS had run in the Leger – SAT IN MY LIVING ROOM GLUED TO THE TV SET. Instead I was sat at the Riverside watching Durham lift the county championship, as yet again the Leger failed to interest me enough to bother watching.
In my opinion a golden opportunity has been squandered here. The BHA should have been doing all in their power to persuade the connections of STS to run at Donny. It would have brought the Leger back into the conciousness of the nation, and if STS had won he would have been confirmed a LEGEND of the turf, instead of which he will just be remembered as another good horse.
I cant blame the connections too much for avoiding it, but if they had have gone for it they would literally have had nothing to lose.
Unfortunately however the rulers of racing have once more shown us how useless and incompetent they are by letting this chance slip through their fingers.
dont you have to be irish to be Coolmore’s ‘no.1’?
Sorry to those who were less than satisfied with the coverage today, in particular Venusian; to state that both myself and Cornelius require a carer was unnecessary and distasteful.
I think the carer comment was amusing, and the fact that you actually found it distasteful
made it all the more so.M Deering, try watching the race again mate, you might learn something
not that loud – I only put £2.50 EW on him!
Manning was arseing the horse about – maybe he didnt act on the track but he didnt give it a good ride IMO. If I’d been on him big style I wouldnt be a happy bunny

if you think FAG was given a bad ride then what about Gan Amrhas?? Why the hell did Manning take a pull on him when he should have let the horse go on – he was always gonna get the trip and the horse just ended up being disappointed – I could see from about the 8 furlong point he was never going to be in the first 3..
Yes I am talking through my pocket but Manning is just not up to the job on the big occasion (yes he won last year but that was due to a good horse not a good jockey).
Ive got a 7 month old son (called Matthew), and decided to put a little fun bet on for him. I was looking through the names of the horses on Sat morning for something which stood out (ie, anything with something like Matt/Baby/Son etc in the name) – couldnt find anything so just held the paper in front of him and backed the horse nearest to where he made a grab for it (turned out to be Priests Leap at 66/1).
Therefore, imagine my disgust when Claire Balding said after the race that Mon Mome means ‘my kid’!!!
She could have mentioned it earlier!!
I think there is a serious point here though (besides the issue about unpronouncable Miko de this and whatever Collonge), and that is (what appears to be) the gradual disappearance of the old fashioned, late-maturing British/Irish chaser.
It seems that all the bloodstock agents these days and a lot of trainers (Alan King and Paul Nichols spring to mind) seem only to be interested in syphoning off all the young precocious french talent, to the detriment of more traditional horses who arent able to achieve as much at such an early age.
It strikes me as a rather short sighted policy, which must be having huge implications on Irish/British NH breeders. You would also think that in these recessionary times that home grown talent would be supported by these people, who instead seem to be after one thing only – instant success and/or instant bucks.

Guineas, Jersey, Beeswing, Hungerford. There you go a 7f pattern every inch as traditional as steak and chips and the Queen’s speech. John Dunlop used to love the Beeswing. So did Cecil, traditionalists both.
Now? The Beeswing is just another seven furlong handicap targeted by shady northerners you’d rather avoid than place a horse with – a race not worth putting down your bacon butty in order to write out a betting slip.
What a tragedy that is.
I agree 100% with all of the above!! unfortunately Newcastle racecourse (like so many other places) is more concerned with getting as many p1ss artists into the place as possible than preserving its heritage. Especially galling as my namesake was the greatest horse ever to come out of Northumberland

lolly,
if the police manage to find this charming mugger chap, can you please ask them to send him round my house for some "entertainment"?
I believe I have some fish-hooks, a stanley knife, a blow torch, a power drill and some battery acid in the loft which could do with an outing…
cheers
first time ive seen the words ‘nice’ and ‘tory’ written together!

Your day must have gone from bad to worse Paul – Whitley Bay is a right dump at the minute! Soon to get a multi-million pound facelift though, to spruce up the Spanish City and inject a bit of life (hopefully) back into the area.
Tynemouth is a couple of miles further down the coast – much nicer place altogether (which is why I live there!)

If they’d faced one another over a mile and a half, would YOU have backed-New Approach or Zarkavayou have to take Zarkava’s fillies allowance into account when comparing her against NA.
I agree that RP should not be 4lbs ahead of HTN, based on their records racing against each other. Cant understand why theyve come to that figure.
Berminn’s idea wouldnt work because horses would become unbalanced by the change in surface approaching the hurdle – this would lead to an even greater risk of falling.
Having turf on the landing side only may be a way round it, but the logistics of having an all-weather track with sections ‘cut’ out of it for turf are likely to be unfeasible, as the same course would not be able to be used for flat AW.
It seems to me that, due to recent events, this journo is trying to make a story where there isnt one. Cant see it happening myself.
As for global warming having anything to do with this – do me a favour!!

Is that the same media-friendly Alex Ferguson who wont speak to the BBC?
