If there are any forumites in the Newcastle area is there any chance of a weather update please?
I have seen conflicting forecasts for tonight one suggests temperatures of plus one the other predicts a frost.
January 14, 2009 at 05:08 #203838Widespread frost, but it’s not severe, temperatures down to around -2. The temperatures are due to get up to around 4 degrees tomorrow after a frosty start. As far as I can see it shouldn’t make a great deal of difference to the meeting going ahead tomorrow. The Racing Post reports that there are no inspections planned. The going is forcast as soft and that would seem to be accurate.

January 14, 2009 at 13:12 #203856Thanks guys – the 9:00 inspection does not help at all when my flight to Newcastle is about to board in five mins.
Decisions, decisions
Have just rung the course and they suggest it is 90% certain to go ahead – so here goes.
If it is called off any suggestions of how to kill a day in Newcastle will be appreciated.
January 14, 2009 at 14:05 #203859Good luck, Peter.

January 14, 2009 at 14:19 #203863I live about 16 miles from the course. There is still an unrelenting frost here, although it is quite bright, so I think the 90% chance of racing is rather optimistic at present. Probably another inspection at 11am.
I will advise about a day in Newcastle if they abandon.

Some fine architecture in Newcastle, Grainger Street in particular

January 14, 2009 at 15:43 #203872I have to say looking at the very white vista as the plane came into land and looking outside the terminal now i would say 90% is very optimistic indeed.
Hey ho – off to the course now to see what it looks like there.
January 14, 2009 at 16:03 #203875Thanks for sharing part of your
flying with us Paul
a nice description
and I will take the memory
of the white vista
with me as I journey into the next room
I am returning to bed
having reviewed all todays racingpsss… the white vista couldn’t have been a car
January 14, 2009 at 16:09 #203876looks very dodgy at Newcastle… talk of them putting back the racing an hour etc…
January 14, 2009 at 16:14 #203877Doesn’t look good from the pictures, there is a possibilty of a delay in the start of the card and the bumper being scrapped (which I sure would go down with the trainers of those horses).
I do hope for Paul’s sake and those others who have travelled afar that it is on.
We have a scenario where Chamerion may run at Catterick on Friday but I can’t see myself travelling up there if there was any doubt over that being on if she was declared.
January 14, 2009 at 16:23 #203878temp is picking up albeit slowly
according to Armstrong
he only rates it a chance.
I’ll keep my legs Xrossed for you all
as I dip into the whiteJanuary 14, 2009 at 16:27 #203881Further inspection at 12.15 with the first race put back to 1pm with an attempt to catch up time and get all the races in if possible.
January 14, 2009 at 17:01 #203892Finally here – most of the track is OK.
However, and it is a big however, the turn out of the back straight is still in shade and from my vanyage point here lookes to be very white still.
If racing is on races will be put back half an hour with teh bumper being sacrificed if it gets too dark.
January 14, 2009 at 17:04 #203895Gordon Brown has just said on ATR that he feels it will be off
January 14, 2009 at 17:11 #203900If racing goes ahead it will be in front of near empty stands.
The feeling here is not optimistic at all but you never know – the chaps who have been here all morning tell me the ground in front of the stands changed from un-raceable to raceable in very quick time – but there doies not seem to be any sun reaching that far turn..
Malcolm Tomlinson is sitting next to me learning the colours but I have a horrible feeling he may be wasting his time.
January 14, 2009 at 17:31 #203906It’s off
