They’ve chickened out a bit in the stayer’s division, I feel!

January 14, 2009 at 06:08 #203847I’ve been told Weekend Hussler is the top rated 3YO sprinter in the world.
I can only imagine our press is clutching at straws here. Who else is in "that category"?

Fleeting Spiritedit: didn’t remember Kingsgate Native until I was in the shower, and by then I’d turned the computer off.

The ratings are a little dubious in my opinion. Especially given Henry’s record against New Approach and in particular Raven’s Pass.
January 14, 2009 at 15:08 #203869I disagree Aragorn. Both horses improved massively for initial defeats to Henry when either tried over their correct distance or ridden properly.

Godolphin dont have a horse in the Top 50. What a shambolic outfit at the moment.
January 14, 2009 at 16:32 #203886If they’d faced one another over a mile and a half, would YOU have backed-New Approach or Zarkava

January 14, 2009 at 16:37 #203887New Approach if they rode him properly.

I agree that RP should not be 4lbs ahead of HTN, based on their records racing against each other. Cant understand why theyve come to that figure.
January 14, 2009 at 18:13 #203916I disagree Aragorn. Both horses improved massively for initial defeats to Henry when either tried over their correct distance or ridden properly.
That ignores the fact that he beat NA twice and never faced him again (2-1 to Henry overall) and RP three times (With an eventual score of 3-2 in Henry’s favour). The only difference between the two horses was the tactic employed by the jockey’s in each race.. Fortune took a while to twig on…
New Approach’s Champion stakes performance has been overrated but that is only my opinion. The Derby and Irish Champion were two of the weaker G1’s in the UK this year as well. Same applies to Curlin who would have been better off entering Mr Universe the night he won the Dubai World Cup.
Personally I thought Zarkava and Goldikova were at least the equals of the boys and Henry over a mile was as good if not better than RP and NA. In terms of ability I would have them all on the same rating. But then this is all based on one performance..
January 14, 2009 at 18:25 #203924I think there is a general over-emphasis on the most recent events which leads to situations such as Ravens Pass/Henrythenavigator anomaly (it it is an anomaly). Turn the season back to front, with every race having the same outcome, and the ratings would be different.
January 14, 2009 at 18:45 #203931Cormack,
You are ignoring the rather fundamental point that 3 year olds tend to improve as the season goes on, thereby resulting in the late season results having more attached to them in terms of evaluating horses.
January 14, 2009 at 20:46 #203951I’m a little surprised at Aragorn using the races at 1m to argue that Henrythenavigator is a better horse than New Approach. Admittedly, HTN could be a better horse than NA, but surely New Approach’s better performances were at a longer distance, and he only once ran over 12 furlongs.
I’ve got a lot of sympathy for the Coolmore 3yo+ horses, because their best performances are early to mid-season, and the autumn always seems to be an afterthought (, Soldier Of Fortune excepting, last year).January 14, 2009 at 20:54 #203952If they’d faced one another over a mile and a half, would YOU have backed-New Approach or Zarkava

I would have backed New Approach. Fists would have wanted to be my bookie.

So would I !

January 14, 2009 at 21:22 #203959I also think that middle distance (10-12f) performances are over-rated in terms of allocating performance ratings.
January 14, 2009 at 22:05 #203966Regardless of how NA had been ridden Zarkava would have treated him with the same disdain she treated every other contender.
