Had a good look round the racecourse this morning
The going is certainly heavy
The course compared to the flooded in/outfields has taken the rain well thanks to the new parallel drainage work apparently, which is now complete. The lateral drainage work (under the track itself) will be carried out during the forthcoming extended close season.
The stands’ side of the straight is very heavy with near-waterlogged patches. The far side (low draw) is noticeably better, so I would imagine stalls will be placed centre or far side
There is significant waterlogging just short of the 10f pole i.e circa 100yds after the International start. They were rolling out the ‘squeegies’ as I was there.
The ‘woodside’ bend from 9f to the straight which has been prone to false ground in the past seems free of problems
Also a waterlogged patch on the inside of the new round course just beyond the winning post, which I guess will be dolled off
The grass itself is in good nick being uniform, dense and green, particularly on the straight
The main carpark is flooded so it seems probable it will be closed. Let the train and shuttle buses take the strain would be my advice
The temporary marquees around the infield Course enclosure are also flooded.
The forecast for the week is pretty dire and frankly I don’t think the course can take much more rain. I do hope contingencies are being made for seven or eight race cards if a day or two is lost
August 17, 2008 at 14:21 #177211Drone thanks for that info. Fingers crossed for a few dry days!
When you say the main car park is flooded is that the one along the straight before the grandstands or the one at the top of the course after the finish line?
With 6 races scheduled each day it should be quite possible to add a few if a day is lost – Cheltenham managed it. Perhaps this is the big guy up there saying the Ebor should stay a 3 day festival !!
August 17, 2008 at 15:11 #177213I live a few miles away and it started raining here about 2.30am and didnt stop till late morning, their more rain around by the looks of it.
They could always run the lost day on the saturday as bar canceling a carboot sale it would make far more sense logistaclly than running it at another track. For some reason they are not having an autumn meeting.
I am not suggesting for one minute that beverly could hold the card, ut Newcastle could, bar the fact their facilties are ****.
August 17, 2008 at 16:07 #177220When you say the main car park is flooded is that the one along the straight before the grandstands or the one at the top of the course after the finish line?
The latter i.e the one on t’mire itself at the Tadcaster Rd end off the Knavesmire Rd tree-lined ‘straight’
Didn’t look at the other one (Bishopthorpe Rd entrance) but imagine it’s less wet as it’s on upland.
Yorkshirepudding,
The boot sale is sacrosanct
August 17, 2008 at 19:03 #177233Thanks for that Drone. Some very useful, indeed invaluable information, about the state of the track.
It seems that given the gloomy weather forecast for the week, the meeting might be disrupted at best. I was planning to go on Thursday with my wife, but she says she will only go if it is sunny and dry underfoot. She likes to see the fashions and mingle with the celebrities.
It’s likely my suit will be staying in the wardrobe. A pity.August 17, 2008 at 20:15 #177239I live 15-miles from York and it’s currently drizzling.
I can’t see Duke Or Marmalade or New Approach running on Tuesday to be honest.
August 17, 2008 at 21:13 #177246Just got back from walking the dog by the river wharfe, its burst its banks up too winter flood levels, be aware of potenetal travel delays due too flooding.
The enviroment agency report that they had heavy rain in the dales last night so we ciuld loose one day at least due too flooding.,I cant see New Approach bothered by soft ground given that he displayed his best form at two on heavy ground,
August 17, 2008 at 23:07 #177257On another forum someone claims that he was talking to one of the groundstaff today and he said that they wouldn’t have raced today and they wouldn’t tomorrow either so I think we’re really struggling for Tues

Unbelievable at this time of year isn’t it.
August 18, 2008 at 00:12 #177261I went to York about 15-20 years ago when Timeless Times was going for the most winners is a season record, and I really liked the place. Really nice course, and an excellent atmosphere. I hope the Ebor meeting goes ahead, but it doesn’t sound too optimistic from what I’m reading.
One thing I think we can be sure of – if the meeitng does go ahead, I’d be very surprised if Top Lock ran in the Voltigeur. Andrew Balding (very nice chap by the way) told me at Hamburg that the rain before the German Derby put paid to Top Locks chances that day – he needs a better surface, so unless there’s some sort of miracle dry-out, I can’t see him running.

August 18, 2008 at 13:44 #177291Drone’s post would make you think that a low draw might help tomorrow in the sprint- is there any historical evidence of this in past meetings on heavy?
August 18, 2008 at 14:04 #177292The ground will be like 1987 when Triptych with Steve Cauthen slooshed home in the intenational.
For me to pinpoint winners at the meeting I will look at the breeding rather take any notice of whether this or that horse has a daisy cutter or round action.
August 18, 2008 at 15:01 #177295It does seem as if low numbers rule on soft here normally.
August 18, 2008 at 18:25 #177308Just came through York on the train and there was flooding to the north and the south. Must surely be bad ground tomorrow.
August 18, 2008 at 18:28 #177309Some excellent updates on this thread, particularly Drone’s. They are much appreciated. Any chance of nipping out tonight and then again first thing in the morning!
August 18, 2008 at 21:05 #177336It is throwing it down here in York at the mo.
August 18, 2008 at 22:48 #177354On the subject of York and going, who is actually planning to go to York?
August 18, 2008 at 23:18 #177358I intend to go but I just can’t believe that they haven’t even called a precautionary inspection as they could get up to 20mm overnight/tomorrow according to the RP.
Don’t know why Derby reassured everyone that it would be on earlier today because it’s looking 50-50 at best to me
