I was going today, fortunaty i love within a bus journey, but I am royaly hacked as I cannot get thursday off work so i will miss the great volitger.
I dont go on ladies day as its full of drunk women, which is not pleasant at all. I would like too see that courses be ordered for every ladies day they must host in the same meeting a Mens day and an LGBT day,. or be banned form having ladies days.

You can get locked up for that…
August 19, 2008 at 14:38 #177413After a promising sunny and windy morning it’s now started to rain heavily again and looks set in for a while.
The groundstaff are trying their darndest to remove surface water with the ‘cricket square squeegie’ from the inside of the home bend into the straight, at a dip near the 3f pole and at several smaller waterlogged patches elsewhere.
Sunday’s comments regarding the straight still apply but the waterlogging near the 10f pole seems to have disappeared, and as anticipated the inside rail of the ‘new bend’ past the winning post has been moved in to doll off some false ground.
There’s a strangely surreal atmosphere down on t’mire with several corporate do’s going ahead in the marquees and the odd be-suited lady and gent wandering aimlessly around.
No winners in extraordinary situations like this, so criticism of the authorities is best avoided really imo
edit: 2:40 and the rain is now torrential
August 19, 2008 at 14:46 #177414Beat me to it regarding the latest rain Drone, seriously depressing situation.
August 19, 2008 at 14:46 #177416Drone,
All weekend I’ve been reading on here/another forum about how the course was saturated and even waterlogged in places so why wasn’t an inspection called well in advance and why were we told yesterday that everything would be fine?
Do you think we’re looking at a Thurs/Fri job at best now?
August 19, 2008 at 15:15 #177419You’re right I do think ‘official’ inspections should have taken place on both Sunday afternoon – with an unambiguous "we could not race today" message and on Monday afternoon – with an equally blunt "we could just have raced today but can’t take any more rain" message.
I’m not an apologist for the track authorities, who could have handled communications better, just feel sorry for all concerned.
Regarding Thursday and Friday: I’m as poor a judge of the fickle English weather 48hrs in advance as Mr Derby and the Met Office are so who knows? If tomorrow is cancelled to save the ground, and if tomorrow is dry all day and all night then there is a possibility of racing going ahead on Thursday
More rain and we’re boogered
I fear it will be morning inspections all week which is hardly ideal for those travelling but what else can be done other than cancel the whole meeting now
It’s still pi$$ing it down btw
August 19, 2008 at 15:56 #177422Just before the betting was suspended on Betfair it was 11/1 for racing to get the go ahead tomorrow.
August 19, 2008 at 16:00 #177423OFF.
Inspection at 12noon tomorrow for Thus/Fri.
Severe weather warning for tonight apparently as well
August 19, 2008 at 16:32 #177425Change at least the graded races to a track with more suitable present ground conditions, such as Newmarket (currently good), or better still Newbury (currently good to soft), which as a track is pretty similar to York.

When?
August 19, 2008 at 17:40 #177427Why, oh why, can they not put the meeting forward a week. We can get a man to the moon, yet our ingenuity can’t rise to contriving something like this.
Well, I know lunar landings present slightly different kinds of problems, but… well, surely if the difficulties are weighed against the benefits, the compromise would be preferable to just trying to shift forward the few Group I and 2 races. How about the Ebor, will that be put forward?
August 19, 2008 at 17:43 #177428I think a lot of you are ignoring the logistics and resource required to deliver events like this… Not an easy task just to move things willy nilly.. Then you have customers to deal with.. Once it no longer makes commercial sense to do something they won’t do it…

Of course it wouldn’t suit everyone, but wouldn’t the best solution be simply to move Tuesday’s card to Saturday, and Wednesday’s to Sunday?
No disruption to the other 2 days, catering etc. rolled forward, & Ch4 surely wouldn’t want too much persuading to cover the additional days?August 19, 2008 at 19:05 #177431Better still why not relocate the whole metting to Redcar as Doncaster will be getting ready for the Leger Meeting.
Im sure all the Sheikhs will love a day on at the Cleveland Seaside.
I seem to remember a few years ago on Whitbread Day that on the Tuesday Ripon and Leicester had to abandon due to severe weather and Doncaster got a meeting put on which filled up easily as indeed did Haydock when they changed an Easter flat meeting to a jumps meeting at the last minuite.
Quite ironic that in the year they close the course early to sort out the drainage it promptly pisses down on the very last week of racing.
August 19, 2008 at 19:52 #177434Hi all some good ideas with regard the re-scheduling but have messrs Derby and co thought about contacting Portman Park
, what with having to put up with that garbage all the time it would be nice if it actually served a purpose for once
, after all no abandonements or non runners but as soon as there is a meeting abandoned elsewhere there is no problem with the Virtual authorities coming to the rescue
Seriously though it could have perhaps been handled better, but not having any qualifications in being Clerk of the Course or anything of that nature who am i to criticise at the end of the day the British Weather as we know it is full of surprises, i am due to go to Huntingdon on Monday and i see that they are watering as neccessary there according to today’s RP, hard to belive given all the Rain we have had where i am recently and it’s only about 15 miles up the road.
Here’s hoping that something can be sorted out.
Cheers.
Adrian.
August 19, 2008 at 22:05 #177442It’s really not an option to suggest that the lost days could be moved to Saturday and/or Sunday. There are so many factors to consider that would make such a move impossible, off the top of my head a few of them could be:-
Staff – the majority of bar staff would be employed by agencies, not the course, and will have other commitments at the weekend. Same with Tote staff.
Food/Catering outlets – these would more than likely be self-employed people who would already have other bookings for the weekend
Starting stalls / stalls handlers. Many courses do not own a set of starting stalls, often they are shared around the courses in the same area. Same with stalls handlers, they are not employed by the course, they are employed by Racetech, and go wherever they are required. With meetings already scheduled to take place at Redcar and Beverley that same day surely there won’t be enough of either to go around.
Police – there would be upwards of 50,000 people at the course if it was rescheduled for Saturday. Resources would be stretched to breaking point if the police had to attend such a massive event at such short notice.
When Cheltenham lost a day in March, as far as I am aware it was never even considered that the lost day would be rescheduled on a new date – it would have been a logistical nightmare on an even greater scale than this. The only time in my memory that a completely new day has been arranged for racing at such short notice has been the 1997 Grand National, and that was a completely different situation – they rescheduled just one race and they let everyone in for free.
If they can’t add the major races that have been lost to what is left of the meeting, they should just draw stumps and try and make every effort to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.
August 19, 2008 at 23:09 #177445I’ve actually e-mailed the Chief Exec at Redcar to ask if he has thought about offering to host a couple of the York races on their Sat night card if we lose all 4 days…
They host a 200k race every October so why not? The Juddmonte/the Ebor would obviously be unrealistic so I mentioned the Gt Voltigeur, Lonsdale Cup & the Acomb.
