I intend to go but I just can’t believe that they haven’t even called a precautionary inspection as they could get up to 20mm overnight/tomorrow according to the RP.
Couldn’t agree more Paul. What I can’t understand is that, if the going is currently heavy, with 15-20 mm more rain expected, surely that makes it waterlogged? I’m just so surprised that an inspection isn’t even planned!!! The only thing I can think of is that this racecourse must have a pretty superb drainage system! At least Paul Struthers/BHB seem to be on the alert with a Cheltenham style contingency plan of rescheduling any lost races.
I really hope the meeting goes ahead, but looking at the posts on here, I just can’t stay too optimistic any more.

August 19, 2008 at 00:23 #177364Weather permitting all four days.
August 19, 2008 at 07:20 #177368All four days for me too, this morning’s inspection permitting of course
Chris.
August 19, 2008 at 08:15 #177372Inspection is at 8.30,not looking good.
August 19, 2008 at 08:43 #177374Lost today, tomorrow doesn’t sound too hopeful either.
Is this natures way of indicating that it she has no "appetite" for a four day Ebor meeting?
Chris
August 19, 2008 at 08:44 #177375I’d be astonished if this meeting got the go ahead.
Heavy ground (and that’s being polite), another deluge of rain through the night, persistent (and heavy) rain forecast today, some public areas waterlogged etc. How can it go ahead?

I think if this were just an ordinary one day card then it would have been abandoned, probably on Sunday. If that’s the case (and it’s just my opinion) I don’t see why anything should be different for this top class meeting.
Hope I’m wrong.

So it probably didn’t even take them five minutes to make the decision. From pictures I’ve seen on tv, reports on here, the weather forecast in the area etc, they’ve absolutely made the correct decision.
The rain is set to continue all day up here. It’s a little better tomorrow but the rain returns on Thursday and Friday. I think it’s safe to say that this meeting will be lost (all week) unfortunately.

August 19, 2008 at 08:54 #177377I’ll have another look around later but given the heavy rain yesterday evening, persistent rain overnight, drizzle now and leaden skies I think the course this morning will basically have returned to its state on Sunday morning: waterlogged in places and flooded surrounds.
Whether tomorrow can be salvaged would seem entirely dependent on today being a dry sunny day like Sunday which rendered Monday borderline raceable. Unlikely in my view.
August 19, 2008 at 09:28 #177382Thankyou to Drone and others on this thread who have saved me a lot of time.
Was going to do around five hours of form study yesterday until I saw this thread.
Cheers.

Value Is EverythingAugust 19, 2008 at 09:38 #177385Very poor communication from the racecourse IMO as from what I was hearing there was little hope of getting today on all along.
In view of the conditions/forecast, would it not be better to move the whole meeting back a week now? Even if the weather abates (unlikely) and we get a couple of days racing this week good horses aren’t going to be risked on that ground and it isn’t going to be pleasant viewing either.
August 19, 2008 at 09:39 #177386Has anything yet been said about what would happen if the whole meeting were abandoned?
Any contingency plans?

Value Is EverythingAugust 19, 2008 at 09:47 #177387A complete PR disaster from York Racecourse.
“York’s clerk of the course William Derby says this week’s Ebor Meeting – due to get under way on Tuesday – is not in any doubt.
Heavy rainfall in North Yorkshire has hit the Knavesmire hard in recent days, but the course is ready to open its doors to thousands of racegoers in the next four days.
The current heavy going could possibly scupper the eagerly-awaited clash between Duke Of Marmalade and New Approach in the Juddmonte International on Tuesday, but Derby has assured the public the meeting will go ahead.
He told attheraces: “The course looks in good nick despite the rain. It is heavy ground but the meeting is not in any doubt at the moment.”
August 19, 2008 at 09:47 #177388On the other hand if they got tomorrow on (again very unlikely), I suppose this could be the schedule –
1.15 – Gimcrack
1.50 – Juddmonte
2.25 – Ebor
3.00 – Lonsdale
3.35 – Gt Voltigeur
4.10 – Roses
4.40 – 1m4f h’cap
5.10 – 1m h’capAugust 19, 2008 at 10:37 #177392Friday’s a possible for me if it’s on.
Given the current conditions, if I squint a bit it will look exactly like a mid-February Point-to-Point fixture – how exciting!!!

August 19, 2008 at 12:00 #177396While Racegoers with tickets for today will not lose their money, what about the hundreds / thousands that will have bought rail tickets 48 hours or more in advance.
I’m due to go tomorrow and to reduce the rail cost by roughly half I would normally have bought tickets yesterday.
Fortunately, in stark contrast to the noises eminating from the course officials, the info offered on here stopped my friend and I from doing so.
Okay we’re only talking about c. £40 x 2 but what would we want with two return tickets from B’ham to York on a day like this ?
I’ll wait till the inspection this p.m but am seriously considering giving the whole things a miss due to the shambolic behaviour of Derby and co.
Although similarly to HJ, I’ll feel much more at home watching a long distance slog through the mud than the usual fare for this time of year

August 19, 2008 at 12:02 #177397New schedule –
http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news … _Lead.html
If tomorrow is off, I suppose they could scrap the h’caps/the maiden on Thus/Fri and run the Ebor, Lonsdale & Gimcrack & Acomb on those days…
