I’m now reading Mark Billingham’s Lazy Bones – he can be a miserable sort of writer sometimes – well his characters can be very depressing. I haven’t read him for a while, so it’s a chance to see if he’s cheered up.
July 8, 2007 at 19:34 #106727I’m reading The History of the World (From 1917 to the 1980’s) by Paul Johnson. I think I’ve worked out the ending…
July 8, 2007 at 20:36 #106741Flippin heck Kingston – you don’t half read a lot.
I’m reading The Alchemist by Paulo Cuelho (for the third or perhaps fourth time).
Good to see this thread, last time we had a similar ‘what are you reading’ type thread someone recommended Pobby and Dingan by Ben Rice. What a find that was. Excellent.
July 8, 2007 at 20:58 #106745I am reminded of a quote from Caroline Aherne’s earlier comedic altar-ego Sister Mary Immaculate:
“The book I’m currently reading is the Bible.
He dies in the end.
(Hope that didn’t spoil it for you)”.

I have The Alchemist here at work for lunchtimes! I got it in a special leathery type looking case from the local tiny bookshop, it only cost $5

I wonder if it’s worth loads of dosh?I loveeeeeeeeeeee reading Admin…… it’s my escapism
– only I had really weird dreams last night, ranging from riding a horse in a packed church, being in a wheelchair and singing on stage with Aled Jones………… maybe I need to see a shrink…………..
July 9, 2007 at 17:45 #106923Not By A Long Shot by T. D. Thornton. It’s a book about Suffolk Downs , which is my local racetrack. I wouldn’t say that the book is the greatest read ever, although the author is a good writer.
The venue itself is very much toward the bottom rungs of US racing, and the place certainly has its problems , but I think that the book presents a pretty cynical view of the track – either that or I socialize in the wrong places.

Auschwitz: The Nazis and the ‘Final Solution’
by Laurence Rees.
Excellent read, doesn’t exactly leave you with a smile on your face but it’s an absorbing book that shows just how easily humans can descend into evil.July 9, 2007 at 20:14 #106956Mark Billingham’s great – I love his dry sense of humour and I think his characters, especially Thorne, are very good.
Atm I’m reading James Herbert’s The Secret Of Crickley Hall – James Herbert is brilliant.
Andrew Taylor is always a decent author to read as well – recently read his A Stain On The Silence and it was superb. One of the best books I have read (well, three actually!) is his Roth Trilogy, sold as three books in one under the title of Requiem For An Angel. It’s superb.

I haven’t heard of Andrew Taylor! I might nip out today and see if they have this book in the bookshop
July 10, 2007 at 07:03 #107010Oh no…..Andrew Taylor’s Fallen Angel The Trilogy is also out on DVD …. do I read the books first and watch the DVD after or do I watch the DVD first and then read the books?
What do I do? What do I do?
July 10, 2007 at 10:58 #107052Amazon have special offers on crime and thriller books at the moment.Three for £12.
Some of the authors mentioned above feature in the list.
July 10, 2007 at 11:01 #107054Thanks Seabird! They may have this Fallen Angel and then whatever arrives first wins the contest! (Decision made for me
)July 10, 2007 at 15:41 #107129you know the books are always better than the films…hope the films make it first, you can watch them, and then discover how crap they were when you read the book and see how the story should really have been told!! See lord of the rings if you don’t know what i’m talking about….
July 10, 2007 at 17:12 #107156I’m reading "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene. It’s not a book for nicey nicey people

I’m also having a Jane Austen phase and I’m also reading "Sense and Sensibility"
Have recently read Atonement and Enduring Love by Ian McEwan. His exceptionally detailed narrative can get a little frustrating but I find I can’t put his books down!
July 10, 2007 at 22:25 #107249I’ve got that Robert Greene book knocking around somewhere, never got round to reading it. Is it a modern update of The Prince or is there more to it?

I think I’m the only person in the world who hasn’t seen any of the Lord of the Rings films –
