Cracker of a race with a big pot up for grabs, winner getting 60K! Veterans series easily one of the best things Racing has introduced in some time.
Come down on two here that I think could easily be shorter –
Gas Line Boy
Thought GLB looked in great form LTO winning the Sefton easily enough by 4 lengths, and a rise of 6lbs is fair enough. Wouldve won on first run of this season but for falling also and that was against a few re-appearing here. Will enjoy the jumping test of Sandown and at 5/1, he’s worth a healthy e/w punt.Houblon Des Obeaux
Think the drop in distance from national distances has been appreciated by the horse who as soon as Feb 16 won a Grade 2 Denman Chase.
Won on debut this season here at Sandown by half a length and although Third Intention is a bit of a rogue he did well to win considering he hit a few.
Probably bounced the last run and think with Noel Fehily in the saddle he’s overpriced at a double figure price.January 5, 2018 at 17:56 #1335715They should all be retired…. Cue card logic.
On a serious note, love these races, houblon does obeaux is a favourite of mine, think he still retains enough class to be winning these
January 5, 2018 at 18:09 #1335717Yup, cracker of a race Kev, and with so many old favourites in there, I’ll have eyes everywhere. Love your pair, Gas Line proper saved my bacon at Aintree, while Houblon has been good to me in the past as well. The last Sandown meeting gave me a cracking couple of days, courtesy of Pete The Feat & Benbens, and with the pair of them weighted to go well, then it’s very very hard to desert them. Throw in Cloudy Too, and it quickly becomes a betting nightmare, as he’s another who owes me nothing.
I’ve got to bet something though, and I’m siding with a horse, who as far as I’m concerned, the phrase “owes me nothing”, was invented for, and it’s my old pal Double Ross. Quite simply one of my favourite horses ever, and I’m sure, having had a slow start to the season, that he still has something to offer. Looked as good as ever at Chepstow on seasonal debut, after a fair old lay off, and he can easily be forgiven an unseat here a couple of months back. In hindsight, with him being a year older, it was a big ask getting him to match his exploits of the previous year at Newbury, where he was last seen, and with him now off of 144, and with a very decent jock taking 5lbs off, then I’ll have a fair go at the 11’s.
I’ll have one of the others as a saver, but at this time, I really have no idea which one. One horse who I will chuck in ew at big odds with 5 Places up for grabs, is Third Intention. There’s a slight suspicion that he might have a target in the spring, but at 14’s, he looks too big. He’s a relative spring chicken here compared to some of them, been given a chance by the handicapper after his run here last time, and he looks a great bet to make the 5. I’ll wait out the 14’s, and try and beat that.

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
January 5, 2018 at 20:32 #1335759Only the third running of the race and already one of my favourite races of the entire season! Watching all these old favourites is like watching a mini Grand National and i see no reason why this race couldn’t be moved to the Cheltenham Festival!
This race has been very kind to me on both previous runnings with Soll and Pete the Feat both proving how profitable it is to be sentimental! I’ll be following suit this year with my three against the field, none of which come here without significant chances.
Pete the Feat winning this last year might have been my highlight of the season and while he comes here 6lbs worse off; the course and ground will suit him better than most.
Double Ross isn’t coming here with any wins to his name this season, but as Bobby said his comeback run was very encouraging and i can forgive him unseating last time as it only made things easier for my third selection…
Houblon Des Obeaux looked like the force of old earlier in the season and was staying on like a train here last time. He should prove very dangerous off this mark on his ground.
I would also put a word in for O’Faolains Boy, but i’m convinced he’ll be heading for Chepstow instead…
January 5, 2018 at 22:52 #1335785Could be made for Double Ross this and I’ll back him. But my main selection is No Duffer. Not the most consistent, but he normally follows a PU with a very decent run. He’s won here and should handle the ground.
Good luck all
January 5, 2018 at 23:10 #1335793I have to back my old friend PERFECT CANDIDATE in this he has won me a right few quid many times!!
Not a race for studying it is a race for just backing your old favourites
January 5, 2018 at 23:27 #1335802I do love these Veteran Races and have gone for FOX APPEAL who may not quite have the ground he really likes but has had a lot of these old timers behind him on various occasions. Happy to see that Richard Johnson is on board tomorrow and think he’ll give it his best shot.
All off to see the Nurse after the race for a rub down with deep heat.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 6, 2018 at 01:40 #1335836Fox Appeal at 16’s skybet 5 places for me.
Believe this horse is one of the most talented in th field although does not always show it. Has had a lot of these behind him in the past, believe maybe a few ahead in th betting would be suited by a bit of a longer trip. Ground probably isn’t the most suitable but 5 places I would say is a solid each way bet.
January 6, 2018 at 03:15 #1335845I’m another one for Houblon Des Obeaux
Believe he still has that touch of class that will be needed for this. I’d say this is the best veterans race I’ve seen. Have to agree with what was said already about this being the best thing Racing has introduced in years. A cracking idea.
January 6, 2018 at 09:25 #1335861Alas this is a race full of my old mates so I’ve basically thrown the form book out the window and lobbed the dosh on my pals. So it’s Double Ross (10/1) – we’ll fancied when falling here two starts ago, Houblon Des Obeaux (11/1) – gets his conditions and Fehily on board, and Loose Chips (20/1) – for no reason other than I love the old boy.
January 6, 2018 at 10:01 #1335869Gas Line Boy was a very impressive winner last time in the Sefton. He was badly hampered by a faller and almost came to a complete standstill. In the end he still won comfortably. Now six pounds higher, but I’ll take it. I also had to go for Double Ross, who was travelling fine in Newbury and is now a his lowest mark for years.
January 6, 2018 at 10:18 #1335875Welcome to the forum JamesStock21.
Head thinks Perfect Candidate will just touch off Houblon. Don’t rule out Benbens either – had a great 2017.
Heart loves them all – be a 14-horse dead-heat please!
But if good old Buywise is there at the last, I’ll be screaming at the telly even louder.
Races like this are such fun that I won’t need to have a bet on it to enjoy. In fact, having a bet will probably reduce my enjoyment!
January 6, 2018 at 11:53 #1335913Added a nibble on Theatrical Star having just seen he’S 20/1. That’s it now – I won’t do any more I promise!
January 6, 2018 at 12:05 #1335922I agree with Charles, Theatrical Star E/W at 20/1. Very light weight for staying chase on Heavy which has handled in past, likes course, runner-up last year. There is a worry about the going for Benbens and imo Double Ross. It’s asking a lot of Perfect Candidate off top weight. One or two others are inconsistent, have apparently lost their form or, dare I say it, are too old! Fear Gas Line Boy the most but will oppose on the basis horse may be very best at Aintree and trainer is not in the form he was.
January 6, 2018 at 15:14 #1335968Really chuffed for old Buywise…
January 6, 2018 at 15:24 #1335970Hope you’re still in one piece Quelle Farce lol
