Went to the meeting Pete won at on 8 December (backed him at 33s to boot), didn’t back him as I thought it was a much better quality race and was just starting to rue my decision until Buywise finally decided that getting on for 3 yrs between drinks was just a little too long.
It was a fantastic advert for the veterans series as a whole and you wonder why they don’t expand it to maybe cover shorter distances and even hurdles (I am sure there are many veteran horses out there that don’t stay 3m or jump fences that are crying out to be catered for).
Not sure whats not to like about them, you can almost guarantee a double digit field for them with some household names running and they usually provide stiring competitive finishes.

Kev, I’d agree about The Festival shout, absolutely crazy. I didn’t see the RP feature, were they going overboard about it?January 7, 2018 at 23:34 #1336215RP conducted a poll. Of just over 3000 respondents around three quarters voted for a veterans race at Cheltenham. Mick Fitz, Simon Clare and a few jockeys were quoted as being in favour. However Cheltenham are saying that if there is to be a new race at the festival it will be a mares Chase!?!
For me the Veterans final brightens up a quiet day and Sandown is the perfect venue. It would just be swallowed up by all the other good races in March. It’s better to give the old boys their day in the sun.
Between the Veterans final and two thirteen year olds going at it in the Welsh National it turned into a superb days racing yesterday.
January 8, 2018 at 00:23 #1336222Yeah, couldn’t agree more Patriots, race is 3 years old, has been an instant success (I wasn’t a big fan of the idea at first), and the trade paper calls for it to be moved to The Festival. Jesus Wept. Are they aware of the current issue of The Festival dominating the season enough already?
What is worrying is that three quarters of 3000 respondees want one at Cheltenham, that’s a fair old amount of people who are very, very wrong, and that’s not even adding Mick F*****g Fitzgerald to the final total.
Yup, both races made for a great days viewing, and amazingly on here, nobody bet the winner on either of the big race threads on here, yet both threads yesterday had a good feeling about them afterwards, which said it all.
January 8, 2018 at 17:33 #1336493Exactly.
The RP has really dummed down. Several tweets in the last 24 hours about Matt Chapman and some skating programme. And there has been a major spelling error on the front page in several recent issues.
What I mean by the above is – who is directing and checking their output ? Pushing the conversation for a vets chase at the festival is a mistake.
January 8, 2018 at 18:52 #1336510Total mistake Mark, but it won’t stop them sadly.
January 9, 2018 at 01:01 #1336572Agree the ‘festival’ would just detract from this. I don’t like the thought of Gordon Elliot hoovering up every jaded 11 year old to get another one on the board either.

Absolutely this.
