Corruption is in racing in every country, I heard on racing world a while ago that an american trainer told his jockey to make sure the horse finishes well adrift if he couldn’t get to the first bend in front. Shocking.
I dislike the use of Bute being allowed in some states in the US, Churchill Downs being an example.
June 12, 2006 at 13:11 #73101Corruption in everything is present in every country. I think UK racing is about as straight as you’re ever going to get it though.
June 12, 2006 at 14:02 #73102Pardon my ignorance but what is bute?
Bute is an anti inflamatory drug that horses are treated with and they’re permitted to run in certain US states with Bute in their system but its not allowed in other states or as far as I know anywhere else in the world.

June 12, 2006 at 15:41 #73105Thank you Market Man for saving my fingers, I have been a fan of horse racing for about 12 years, there isn’t a lot I don’t know about racing I don’t know, but should I come unstuck would you mind if I contact you?
Not at all but I’m not pretending to be some great authority on the sport, like everyone else there’ll be things I do know and other things I don’t. I don’t know everything by any means but I’m always willing to help if I can.
June 12, 2006 at 16:39 #73107Nice one, always good to get accurate information from other people. For the sake of it I fancy Traverse in the 6:00 at Roscommon this evening, I would normally tip it each way in an E/W double but looking at his probable SP he must be backed to WIN. Did you ever watch Only Fools Buy Horses on the Discovery Channel, if not its well worth buying the DVD. All the best.
June 12, 2006 at 19:23 #73108We have a "handicap system" which is by it’s nature open to manipulation – I think that might have a great baring on which is straighter.
June 12, 2006 at 19:54 #73109Nearly all racehorses in America run on bute and Salix, drugs which are banned in nearly every other country in the world, so the question is a no-brainer.
Bute is particularly pernicious, as it produces the double whammy of being at the same time a painkiller and a bone-weakener – it’s no wonder horses in that country don’t last any more.
June 12, 2006 at 22:23 #73110Venusian, without saying too much I think you just hit the nail on the head. Catch 22, but me you and countless other horse lovers would never put a horses health at risk.
June 12, 2006 at 22:35 #73111Without sounding ignorant the only place I know of which is definitely legal to use is Churchill Downs, Kentucky, but from racing world (sky ch. 433) I know there are a few states in which it is is legalised.
June 12, 2006 at 22:39 #73112Personally I think obviously all drugs should be banned in horse racing worldwide, but I could honestly say I would prefer my horse to trail in last than break-down mid race like a lot of US horses. DS.
June 13, 2006 at 06:29 #73113I believe that bute and Salix are legal in all states.
June 14, 2006 at 00:27 #73114I suggest you go to Google to find out more about drugs in horse racing. I believe bute is used to stop horses bleeding (breaking a blood vessel which causes shortage of breath )and is legal everywhere in the US.
PS from this explanation you can see I am not an expert
June 14, 2006 at 02:36 #73115Lasix is for bleeding.
Ven, I don’t think Bute is allowed in all states, but certainly in Kentucky.
The permissible amount of Lasix allowed is half as much in Canada than in the US and is administered by the vet on the morning of the race. $90 (£45) Canadian a shot, or there abouts.
They should get rid of both and come into line with the rest of the world.
Although I use the exchanges to bet on UK racing, I think they are a licence for absolute corruption.
The handicap system forces ‘corruption’. A trainer has to ‘use the system’ otherwise the horses would have little chance of ever winning again.
I’m not so fond of the claiming system, but it does grade the horses and if you drop to low, then you will lose your horse.
We’ve had problems, as have the States with ‘milkshakes’ etc. I think 3 months is nowhere near enough of a punishment. Working the handicap I can live with, but things like this are outright cheating.
I think racing here at Woodbine is fairly straight. It’s by no means perfect and certainly not without it’s types, but it’s as good as anywhere and better than most.

December 11, 2006 at 17:52 #548Good to see jockeys Dean Williams and Brian Reilly warned off for 18 months apiece and ex-owner and off course bookie Owen Churchill for 8 years as the HRA continue to clean up racing’s tawdry image. Full transcript yet to appear on the HRA website but clear message that systematically leaking information and more isn’t "inside information" but is in fact corrupt.
