Good thing they’re doing this indoors. After all, NH is an indoor competition…. No need for them to get wet or face the wind.

    Henderson said
the objective to running him at Southwell is so I can hopefully see what potential he has for racing on the flat and if we can go further down that route.

“He is in great form and if it continues that way he will definitely run on the 20th February and that will then tell us what future he has, or if we have to start thinking again.

What route on the Flat? If the horse were to win the Southwell Maiden the step up in handicap company will prove a completely different thing. CH would have to face maybe a higher number of horses in one single race than he ever experienced over the Jumps. I don’t think he’ll like being held up, bumped or kept in a pocket in a double digit field…..

The route on the flat I think they would potentially be thinking of is something along the lines of what they did with Wicklow Brave (Ormonde Stakes/Irish St Leger/Yorkshire Cup/Goodwood Cup/Lonsdale Stakes/Ebor) i.e. races around 1m6f-2m.

If he is quick enough for 12F that opens up even more options so the Southwell race will probably be a lot more important to the continuation of his career than most think – I feel the Champion Hurdle could very well be the last roll of the dice for his jumping career if he hits the deck in it again.

I think he is light years away from being an Ebor or Goodwood cup horse. He will be vulnerable to younger legs. But, if this year’s Champion Hurdle would be a Flat race only, he’d be a very short priced fav.

Not sure anyone thought Wicklow Brave was capable of winning the G1 Irish St Leger and/or finishing 2nd in an Ebor or 4th in a Goodwood Cup etc either.

He is fast running out of options if his hurdling issue can’t be overcome and its not like he has a lot of miles on the clock even for a horse of his age (a 9yr old with 14 lifetime runs).

Bit of a daft statement that as with the prizemoney there would be a lot better flat horses than CH enter. Also the clue is in the name ‘Champion HURDLE’.

“I think he is light years away from being an Ebor or Goodwood cup horse”.

Agree. He hasn’t even run in a Flat race yet, never mind win one. And he is sired by a horse that has never had a Flat winner. But some people reckon he can win the Ebor!

I reckon he would never get a high enough rating to get into the race.
