A much more critical article, also from the Graun.
The simple fact is that both parties abuse it and then they both engage in grossly hypocritical criticism of the other.
December 2, 2024 at 18:04 #1714616There is a difference in degree though
December 20, 2024 at 14:17 #1715755Now the “Wall Street Journal” and the “New York Times” (the latter is not “right wing” the last time I checked) are suggesting that Biden was senile from Day 1 and has in effect never been President.
In other news, a man who wears white robes and lives in a city state enclave within Rome has been identified as a Roman Catholic.
I don’t have much sympathy with Biden’s politics but I do sympathise with him on a personal level. It has actually been quite upsetting to watch this man who was obviously struggling and should not have been in the job.
December 20, 2024 at 16:43 #1715798It makes the decision to put him forward as the candidate all the more bizarre. Had they run a proper contest for the nomination, the eventual candidate (Harris or otherwise) would have had far more legitimacy and could surely have run a better campaign.
Whether it would have made a difference we’ll never know but this was no landslide for Trump.
For what it’s worth I don’t think Trump is all there either and I personally do not see him completing his term. If he does it’ll be Biden style with someone else pulling the strings (if they aren’t already).
December 20, 2024 at 18:24 #1715812“It makes the decision to put him forward as the candidate all the more bizarre.”
Agree – not only bizarre but indefensible. His performance in the debate with Trump was excruciating to watch. He should never have been put in that position. It was cruel.
Questions need to be asked of his entourage, including his wife.
December 30, 2024 at 07:00 #1717023Given the dismal state of American political life across both the major parties, there does seem something symbolic about the passing away of Jimmy Carter, aged 100.
Carter’s one term Presidency cannot really be regarded as a success, although it contained one landmark achievement: the Camp David Agreement between Israel and Egypt, which brokered a peace which has endured to this day.
Otherwise, Carter was the victim of events over which he had little control. An oil crisis and economic downturn meant it was always going to be a tall order winning a second term. But the botched attempt to free the American hostages in Iran condemned him to being a one term President.
His reputation rests on his time after the White House. Aside from being the longest lived President, he also had the most successful post-Presidential life, which culminated in him rightfully winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.
No matter anyone’s personal political beliefs, President Carter was clearly a good, decent man of great integrity, motivated by his Christianity to help those less fortunate than himself and not in politics for personal gain. What a contrast to today’s political class.
He joins that group of famous people who died between Christmas and New Year, which includes Gerald Ford, his predecessor as President.
December 30, 2024 at 08:31 #1717024Great post, CAS. Couldn’t agree more with you.
December 30, 2024 at 08:46 #1717025Not that it ultimately matters but I think it’s nice that he did just manage to make 100.
Given that he left office over 40 years ago it shows another contrast with today’s politicians, at least across the pond. He actually had the time post-presdidency to forge another path. The outgoing incumbent is only about 18 years Carter’s junior and the President Elect four years younger than that.
December 30, 2024 at 17:06 #1717066He was determined to live long enough to vote against Tump. It’s sad that he lived to see someone like Trump once again become president; there can’t be two men more different with one of them being a true Christian who lived his life by his Christian values. And the other hiding behind a facade of it.
December 31, 2024 at 22:24 #1717179Carter was a brave man to , in 1952 he assisted in cleaning up a submarine reactor after a accident , to be honest he did well to make 100 , as per the doc attached he also visited 3 mile accident during the actual event , he had to show the public that he had confidence in the nuclear programme , somehow I doubt trump would do similar …

Good grief… Had to double check that wasn’t satire.
January 8, 2025 at 16:52 #1717725Trump is threatening to take over Greenland, not ruling out force. Canada to be come the 51st state and to take over Panama and rename the Gulf Of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Probably get the Mexican’s to finish the wall. Probably got eyes on our country too and promote Nigel Farage to PM. Talk about delusion.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.January 8, 2025 at 17:27 #1717726Its certainly a talking point, Greenland untouched and full of jewels..
January 9, 2025 at 17:36 #1717746Half of Los Angeles on fire. At least we can trust the incoming President to do something about the climate.
January 9, 2025 at 18:45 #1717747Ship the ice from Greenland. Maybe we are not seeing the true thoughts.
Anyone fancy Elon Musk to be the first global president?

Biff in Back to the Future after becoming a multi millionaire from gambling springs to mind.
January 11, 2025 at 08:33 #1717826Either Trump or Musk will fall in the next 4 years , 2 big egos can’t work in harmony … It’s my believe Musk will bring Trump down
