I think I was always a million to one ever to make a Jedi Knight and I’d be quite surprised if anyone ever thought otherwise!
I must admit that, after many years of royally despising the event – even when I was there! – the good Captain transformed it into top-notch entertainment for me yesterday.
Some might say the Good Captain is as mad as a balloon (possibly two balloons) but some of yesterday’s rampant OTT material was so hilarious it had to be tongue in cheek.
Rather looking forward to next year now!
Shameful, isn’t it?

August 8, 2021 at 14:20 #1553923Harsh (but possibly fair).
Many actors say they have the most fun when cast as a baddie and it is sometimes said that: “All The World’s A Stage….”

That is all
August 9, 2021 at 15:53 #1554124It’s impressive that one afternoon’s racing at one course every year can get the “proper racing” crowd so animated.
A bit like The Hundred in cricket, there’s nothing more upsetting to the trad-cognoscenti than seeing large amounts of people enjoying the sport in completely the ‘wrong’ way.
Long may it continue!

I think you probably have things about right.
The old traditionalist racing follower in me has no trouble with the Shergar Cup (Racing League? Hmmm!) but the old cricket traditionalist in me can’t handle The Hundred. Mind you that may have something to do with the fact that my batting was dominated by defence with the very occasional off drive or late cut! I did play the 20 over version of the game for many years, we were playing it in the ‘Evening League’ many years before the professional game ‘invented’ it, but that had a bit to do with the fact that I lived near the ground and could get there after work!*
To a certain extent I bit the bullet with team racing as it serves up a succession of 10 to 12 runner Class 2 and 3 handicaps which are the type that I relish studying and have a decent amount of success with. On that basis I can live with it.
*My cricket career was never full of sparkles but I did bag a couple of league winner medals from the 20 0ver game.
August 9, 2021 at 16:17 #1554126I don’t mind T20, although Test is best. But I am dead against the ‘100’. 5 ball overs? Bowlers bowling two ‘overs’ consecutively? Not neccessary and not cricket, to coin a phrase.

August 9, 2021 at 18:02 #1554138Surely the time has now come for Ascot to create a NH Shergar Cup.
4 teams.
GB
IRELAND
WOMEN
FRENCHWhat a day that would be

I would need to be strict on the rules and NO MEN would get away with riding for the women’s team girls name or not. The nationalities must genuinely represent who they are also.
August 9, 2021 at 18:15 #1554140Trainers:
Willie Mullins, Henry De Bromhead, Joseph O Brien
Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson, Dan Skelton
Venetia Williams, Lucinda Russel, Emma Lavelle
Croquette Head, J Rouget, Andre Fabre
What a day this would be. The great trainers and jockeys uniting as one force.
I’m offering 50/1 on the women’s team right now before Ascot have even agreed to host it.
August 9, 2021 at 18:23 #1554143Thought the nationalities were jockey-based Cap’n.

August 9, 2021 at 18:32 #1554145“Croquette Head, J Rouget, Andre Fabre”.
Methinks Robbo is having a laugh.
August 9, 2021 at 19:51 #1554160In my version the trainers, jockeys and the horses will all be GB bred, French bred, Irish bred and the women must all be women including the horses.
August 9, 2021 at 19:53 #1554161I would employ Derek Thompson to present the television racing extravaganza.
August 9, 2021 at 20:09 #1554164Innovation is your middle name Robbo. Insisting on the women being women is wonderfully antiquated in these strange times. If you need a petition signing, (Idi) I’m in.

August 9, 2021 at 21:16 #1554172Derek Thompson was born to commentate on races containing horses with names like Oh It’s Saucepot to holidaying racegoers at Great Yarmouth in the height of summer.
He is the ultimate Butlins red coat of racing.
Many don’t, but I actually rather like him – he must be turned 70 but he’s still get the same relentless enthusiasm he had in his 30s.

As a commentator and tipster he isn’t the best but as presenter he is masterful.August 10, 2021 at 03:45 #1554180A NH Shergar Cup is a splendid idea, but after which horse should it be named?
I propose Samcro: a legend (to some, at least), who mysteriously went missing.
The Samcro Cup. Sorted.
