I saw an even funnier clip where he is hosting the final of the Best Dressed Lady competition at Haydock, presumably later that same night. Unfortunately I cannot find the link.

I know quite a few people in racing who really don’t like him and apparently he can be pretty ruthless behind the scenes in competition for work.

But it’s a dog eat dog world, none of that affects me as a viewer and I just think he’s hilarious.

I do also think he’s good at gently drawing casual racegoers into the game and when he’s in action at places like Yarmouth, where a lot of the crowd are first-time racegoer holidaymakers, he strikes just the right fun but gently educational note.

I first met Derek when I was about 15, after racing at Newmarket. He had been working there for C4.

As mentioned, my dad’s family knew his family. When my dad said hello to him, Derek said come back after racing for a chat. We must have talked for the best part of an hour.

His presenting style is clearly not everyone’s cup of tea and personally I do not think he is a particularly good race commentator (sorry Derek) – but I think he is a good presenter and was a key part of that classic C4 team.

And as it is Sunday morning, who can resist a two minute clip of the man in action? Classic Thommo moments at about 15 seconds and 1 minute 30.

For me, you’ve just gotta love the bloke.

But then I love his hilariously relentless pint full, never mind half full, positive approach to everything, even if it is an on-screen persona in a marketing promo video.

I love the way he got so excited about a standard looking buffet. And “the best bar in the world” – which looked like a few crates of bottled beer. And he got a “big fella” in there as well!

From “commen-tater” to “oh, hello!” as an attractive young woman walked by to “steady, big fella!” as in the next breath he admonished his cameraman for being that bit too focussed on her, to bigging up a plateful of sandwiches and nibbles you could probably get in ASDA on a three-for-two offer, he’s a quality act from start to finish.

Much as I admired the imagination in Mr Davies’s Authoritarian Dictator thread and the sheer weight of detail in BH’s Juvenile Hurdlers thread, I voted for this one as Thread of the Year.

I usually have very little interest in the Shergar Cup but this thread made one of the most boring Saturdays of the year into one of the most entertaining.

Not sure where Robbo has gone. Still counting his losses from Shergar Cup day, on top of his Euros and Wimbledon losses perhaps.
