Possibly the most exciting day in the racing calendar.
Racing has done one good thing this century and that is The Shergar Cup.
Whilst traditional festivals such as Cheltenham are over talked all year and then a stretched out watered down damp squib where you just want the week to end as it got boring watching the coverage after the first few hours.
The Shergar Cup packs all the excitement into one day and has me on the edge of my seat with my annual team racing bet.
This year the women are the favourite but they should be the outsiders and look booked for last place.
Team GB the boys in blue with the all star jockey team of Fallon, Doyle and captain Kirby look set to lift the 2021 trophy in emphatic style.
What a day, what an innovation. It’s all about the Shergar Cup and anyone who disagrees is stuck in the Middle Ages.
August 7, 2021 at 06:18 #1553652A truly Group 1 wind-up from the good captain.
Which is just as well as it’s the only Group 1 performance you will see today.
The event that should carry Shergar’s name – the Shergar Classic Trial, it has a ring to it.

Really enjoy the form study side of trying to work out which team will score the most points and then the fun of watching the race and hoping for the 1-2-3. Cheering on your team and hoping the rival team doesn’t run well.
Perhaps if you placed a bet on Team GB to win then you may actually enjoy the day and get into it.
I’m looking for my 5th successive Shergar Cup victory today. Everything has gone into ensuring I am on the correct team and today that is Team GB. No mistakes made.Compare the day to Cheltenham, having been bored half to death in the month leading up to the festival I then have to sit through an endless dull fest of boring handicaps to watch 3 highlights – The Gold Cup, Champion hurdle and Champion Chase. That takes 4 days soon to be 5 of being bored to tears waiting for 3 races only.
It’s all about The Shergar Cup – 6 races no messing about. We won’t see any group races but a group race is simply a low grade seller ran a few seconds faster anyway.
August 7, 2021 at 08:42 #1553663Funnily enough my one and only ever visit to the Shergar Cup cropped up on my Facebook memories this morning.
As you can see I DID enjoy the day….
“had the most lovely time at Ascot on Saturday. Good racing, delicious King Prawn Tempura with sweet chilli sauce, then an 80s-themed gig in the late afternoon sunshine with China Crisis, Brother Beyond, Visage (”Two eyes staring cold and silent….” – loved it!), Toyah, Altered Images (Clare Grogan looked AMAZING and was great), Odyssey, Kid Creole, and the brilliant Jimmy Somerville.”
….BUT you can only see I made zero mention of the “teams.”
Like everyone else there, I didn’t take a blind bit of notice of all that and just enjoyed a sunny summer Saturday afternoon at the races.
I couldn’t even tell you what “team” won that day (2011) and neither could anyone else I spoke to.
The only “team” to punters is “Team Me,” namely the horse they backed in that race.

August 7, 2021 at 08:56 #1553666I had to look it up, TTC.
“Ladies,” “Rest Of The World,” “Great Britain” and “Ireland.”
Except “Ladies” has two from Great Britain, Ireland has two who ply their trade in Great Britain and “Rest Of The World” goes one better – all three are based over here.
But so long as I bet on the winners I don’t give a **** about who rides them and I suspect I’m not alone.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 7, 2021 at 08:56 #1553667Women – PINK
GB – Blue
Ireland – Green
Rest of World – YellowIt took me some working out as it used to be GB&Ireland in Green and Europe in blue.
Fallon-Kirby- Doyle = Game Set and Match. Superb bet on Europe today. They should be well clear on points by the 2nd race. Ireland look the main dangers.
August 7, 2021 at 08:58 #1553668Just when you think you can’t get any more worried about Captain Anti-Vax….you find out he has a genuine affection for the Shergar Cup.

A totally unique and fantastic betting experience.

Snubbed by racing wannabe snobsAugust 7, 2021 at 09:03 #1553671I resent the suggestion I’m a “wannabe snob.”
I’m a fully-fledged, bona fide, snob, thank you very much!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 7, 2021 at 09:05 #1553672The administration seems very poor. Why is it so hard to understand who the teams are (thanks to Robbo and ID for confirming)? What are the prices for the team winners? You shouldn’t need to be Columbo to figure these things out. If you are going to do it, at least do it right.
BUY THE SUN
August 7, 2021 at 09:08 #1553675You don’t need to be Colombo to figure out who the teams are. Just the ability to google search which colours are the teams was suffice.
Also for the pricing you don’t need to be Colombo. Just look at racing section of your bookmaker and click on specials and the Shergar Cup odds should be there.
The women are the favourites to win this is a horrific error as they should be the outsiders today. An intelligent person will take full advantage of this and go maximum bet TEAM GB 🇬🇧 💕
August 7, 2021 at 09:10 #1553676Make your mind up Captain Mainwairing – “It took me some working out”. From a Shergar Cup superfan!
Just one more thing, sir…….I was talking to my wife, and I can’t see anything on oddschecker.

Cheers, Captain, for giving me my first ever reason to take an interest in the “Team” aspect of this nonsense – “Come on, the other three!”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 7, 2021 at 09:18 #1553683Your day is destined to be dismal and disappointing if you are not with Team GB.
Blue is the colour.
I have blue jeans on, blue socks, blue boxers and a blue t shirt. I’m contemplating painting my face blue to help with the carnival spirit though fear I may have to miss out as I only have a blue bic biro to work with.
August 7, 2021 at 09:20 #1553684If Team GB win, I absolutely promise to be the first on here to congratulate you and eat humble pie (or whatever else I like the look of for supper in Waitrose).
