‘I hear he will be Charles III – Charles The Abdicator has a better ring to it to me.’
The Monarchy has surely lost some support effectively overnight. Charles will never be as popular as his mother (nor would anyone else) and it’s hard for him to play the neutral observer with some of his views being well documented. There won’t for obvious reasons be a discussion for a while but the debate will shift when it comes.

That’s what he said Big G and later went on to say he was glad it had been heard and his face contorted into a half embarrassed wry smile.
I’ve always found Witchel watchable after that. Many yonks ago, I spotted him scudding across the bus stand outside Victoria station looking quite earnest. I remember he reminded me of my hero Tintin but rather than a snowy dog, he probably had a royal log with him.
I saw Dennis Healy in the same place years earlier. I never forget a red face in labour.September 9, 2022 at 13:59 #1613983The loss of The Queen is unsettling and more saddening than I would have ever expected.
Good luck to King Charles who seems a far merrier soul these days. He’ll be considered a poor replacement by many but I can’t think of anyone I’d prefer. Good Prospect unseated him but surely not republicans. Who would we have as a figurehead ?- Floella Benjamin, Andrew Motion, Nicolas Van Hoogstraten….
All this sombre music is tempting me to come up with a threnody of my own
September 9, 2022 at 14:45 #1613992I found the 96 gun salute quite emotional. Is it not true that actions can often move far more than words ?
Sorry Paw if you are looking down with a smirk on all this – I knew you thought they were freeloaders, but I think I may not be sitting on the fence anymore.
Strangely enough, eight years ago I was sitting in a Hove hotel bar enjoying a krone and it was enjoyably empty apart from this pratt who appeared to be doing his accounts messily spread over two tables, and he had this spoilt kid with him. Above him was a menace turned on and blaring out, and far louder than the mandatory regulation hospital waiting room set. I took an instant dislike to the guy and when he poodled off to the bathroom I got up and turned the volume to mute. The bartender quickly came over to me and in a low voice said…
” Oh I wouldn’t do that Sir, he won’t like it. ” I said something like – well he’s hardly watching it and who is he to say? ”
” That’s Mr Van Hoogstraten Sir, he owns the hotel – I advise you to turn the volume back up. ”
I told him I wouldn’t and this guy came back and gave me a dirty look but the menace thankfully stayed quiet.
I only had one pint then left. I knew who he was and a local had told me he’d wacked somebody but nobody could prove it. On the way home I took a couple of furtive looks behind me. He went to Zimbabwe in 2016 but I hope he still remembers me, and the short stand off I gave to the bully.
September 9, 2022 at 14:55 #1613996Nice article by Nicky Henderson on the Racingpost – https://www.racingpost.com/news/the-queen/racings-patron-saint-and-best-friend-nicky-henderson-remembers-the-queen/578012
“I remember once having a winner for her and she told me she’d been watching it in the sitting room. The horse led over the last, but it was a tight finish so she stood up and screamed it home. With that, she said the security guards burst open the door thinking there had been some ghastly drama, but found her shouting at the television rather than an intruder! That always tickled me.”
LOL!

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.

Having seen Diana blacked out during the Platinum celebrations, and Camilla given a prominent role, it will be interesting to compare the two funerals.
“It was as if even the most intelligent person had this little blank spot in their heads where someone had written: “Kings. What a good idea.” Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. It was its tendency to bend at the knees.” Terry PratchettSeptember 9, 2022 at 17:59 #1614040Respect Gamble. Van Hoogstraten was notorious in Sussex for many reasons. Absolute graceless monster with not one redeeming feature. The fact that he escaped justice says much about the quality of justice in this country. Went to Zimbabwe because of his connections to Mugabe. He’s apparently now changed his name to Nicholas Adolf von Hessen. Know anyone who has changed their name to “Adolf” since 1939? Thought not. Tells you all you need to know.
September 9, 2022 at 18:42 #1614047“Who would we have as a figurehead?”
A question that presupposes that a figurehead is required.
Tbh I’m a bit surprised Simon Cowell hasn’t thus far emerged, suggesting a TV Series entitled “Britain’s Got Royalty” – or simply “The R Factor” – in which the public could, over an excruciating number of weeks on the run up to Christmas, choose by weekly vote the next monarch among a host of applicants hailing from the four corners of the land.

Claimants judged against the earliest historically verified King/Queen. Literally the only qualification for the job but never tested.

The Royal Family costs the public c.£100m per year.
They bring back a lot more than that.
When it comes to wasting taxpayers’ money, the Windsors are way down the list.
September 9, 2022 at 20:22 #1614054Are they Windsors though? That’s the question. When dna is the only qualification, it ought to be tested.
Never bought that “they bring in wealth” argument anyway. How many UK citizens (sorry “subjects”) have even seen the Queen, let alone tourists? It’s the history that’s important, not the inheritors. People visit Versailles & the Hermitage because of their historical & artistic importance (as random examples) because of their links to their owners’ living descendentsSeptember 9, 2022 at 20:23 #1614055“They bring back a lot more than that.”
But do they though?
I’d be interested to see how the economy got on without them.
I think the Royal Family is credited with a lot of revenue without actual hard evidence of a link to back up the claim.

September 9, 2022 at 23:57 #1614061I did presuppose that a figurehead may be required. On reflection I would accept that Liz O’Leary or Sir Keir might provide a coruscating enough experience for us to do without Michael D.Higgins wannabes
