See ‘Arkle’ thread. This was probably the most rubbished horse – admitedly mainly the same repeat offenders – on any of the Cheltenham threads. Hope there is enough humble pie to go round.

Impressive looking performance but this was a terrible terrible Grade 1 event and the jury is certainly still out for me.

Perhaps it wasn’t the strongest contest, but Arkle third, Osana, came there with every chance and Tataniano destroyed him.

O’Grady’s horse is a solid yardstick and the form merits some respect.

You don’t need to analyse what he beat to know the winner is a good horse. He travelled like a dream, jumped wonderfully and went away to win by an unextended thirteen lengths.

He’ll be a danger to all next season over the minimum distance – Big Zeb, Master Minded and Sizing Europe.

I still think Sizing Europe is the best two mile novice chaser we have seen this season, but I think this fella will be ideally suited to Sandown if connections decide on the Tingle Creek next season.

Osana hasn’t run up to his arkle form at all today and falls below top class at his best anyway. As I said it was an impressive looking performance but people get carried away with performances like today with out being objective about the result all too often.

That was a very very poor field by Grade 1 standards and I for one would like to see him pitched against some decent opposition

Tell you what Stilvi I never gave him much of a chance in the Arkle but thought he was a knocking bet today.

As I said back then he’s a very racey type and what you see is what you get………perfect type for round Aintree though and to be honest he did exactly what I thought he would. Horse was as keen as mustard and no hills and valleys to stop his momentum.

Put him back round Cheltenham against the top notchers he’ll run himself out of it IMO.

Smashing horse with a big future though.

    He won very easily.

However, you have to ask what he has beaten.

Osana had a hard race in the Arkle, Tataniano has had a fair break, and obviously was taken out of the Arkle with today’s race in mind.

No doubt he is a very talented horse, but i would imagine the ‘flatter’ tracks will play to his strengths more than the undulations of Cheltenham.

He won’t trouble Big Zeb, Forpady, Sizing Europe Cee Bee in the Champion Chase next year.

Fairly serious horse on a track like this though, as Fist has said.

My rule for next year’s Aintree; back everything I backed at Cheltenham either on the day or ante-post.

Dee Ee Williams, Tataniano, Khyber Kim, Burton Port, General Miller, Albertas Run…and I only backed the latter 2 this time around

Tataniano’s two best RPRs prior to today have been recorded around Exeter and Cheltenham, so I’d be less convinced than some that his prospects next season are flat track-contingent.

It’s not the flat track for me, it’s the fact that Aintree seems to suit front runners. They can go flat to the mat and free-wheel off the bends. Mad Max also advertised this point.

Yes, ground is the key, not the course.

Osana has not under-performed in two previous visits to Aintree so what reason is there to suggest – other than not liking the implications of a literal interpretation of the form – that he has under-performed here? He beat the other runners easily enough.

Probably a bit early to say what he really wants but his Cheltenhasm victories in a novice hurdle and his defeat of Pidgeon Island on a non going day wouldn’t have me rushing to back him against Sizing Europe and co.

I just feel to take on these boys you need to be able to settle and have the ability to travel like them. Tataniano’s just too keen and wants to race a bit more than the norm. That’s fine if you can dominate especially round a track like Aintree or round Cheltenham against inferior opposition of you like.

As good as he is I think today because he’s such a racey type he was in top gear most of the way. That’s probably a gear lower than horses like Master Minded, Sizing Europe, Capatain Cee Bee and Big Zeb cruise at……I’ve always thought the ability to do that is a huge advantage on tough courses wheras Aintree suits horses who depend more getting the head down at getting on with it.

Why PN/Stewart decided to take him out of the Arkle I have no idea but seems like they made the right choice

I am Tataninaos biggest fan, I’ve wrote thousands of words on each of his runs, booked tickets just to see him at Cheltenham then withdrawn, would love to go see him, he would of won Arkle doing handstands but I am grateful that I took some of the 5-1 early in the morning to recover some funds plus profit, you keep laying him ill keep backing him.

World class horse who will take over the mantle from Big Bucks, Kauto, Denman etc

All of Osana’s form (both hurdles and chases) points to him needing to be up with a strong pace over a stiff 2m+ to be anywhere near his best, his finest hour probably coming when thrashing Katchit and Sublimity after making all in a fast-run Boylesports. Nothing in today’s conditions was greatly in his favour, and I’d doubt he’s run anywhere near his Arkle form. He’s still learning his trade over fences, but I’m amazed his new connections haven’t made more use of him, and it would be no surprise to see him stepped up considerably in distance, next season.
Tataniano might have won at Cheltenham and Exeter, but both those races were won a long way out, and prove nothing about his ability to last out a good field QMCC. Though he won well and jumped superbly today, there appeared more than a shade of ‘Twist Magic’ in his performance.
    The jury’s still out,imo.

The horse was as fresh as a daisy, taking on a battle weary Osana and a few others that didn’t favour the ground, for me.

Tataniano missed it’s chance in the Arkle….the big one. Maybe next year.

Not knocking you but it would help if you could spell his name  Seriously though, good on you and stick with it even if others disagree with you.

The form book says on a line through Osana he’s the best novice in the land but unfortuantely the form book tells more lies than Tom Pepper.

Very hard race to judge as we have no idea how much Cheltenham took out of Osana and the rest would get chased of the course if they were enetered for next year QMCC.

Aintree form can be very misleading so I’d rather wait and see how he turns out next season.

Master Minded and Twist Magic would still be top of the pecking list and if they come back in next season looking the part I think you’ll find Tataniano is sent over further. If he were mines and I got ahint of that, he’d be off to Nicky Hendersson and kept at 2 miles.
