I’m sure there a jockeys more surly & as unresponsive to the media as Ryan Moore is, but they’re not winning all the time so how would we know?
Then there’s Paul Hanagan. Very polite, answers all questions honestly & yet when he comes on the television I have to ramp up the volume only for At The Races to play that instrumental piece that leads into the ads & blow my bleeding head off.

, I read this with a wry smile. Don’t you think there’s a sublime irony in the fact that, on a Forum which so often questions jockeys’ honesty, you are actually urging Ryan Moore to try to be a bit more
dis
honest?!
I wasn’t suggesting dishonesty. To give an example, I remember after he won his first classic, the Oaks, the interviewer congratulated him and he said something like ‘it wasn’t the Derby’. I found this rather revealing, suggesting his depth of ambition, but many people took it negatively. Therefore I am suggesting he smiles a bit more and prepares a few standard comments or even cliches like ‘team effort’ ……’terrific race’……..’fantastic, game horse’…’gave all’….’lucky to find a gap’…etc. I don’t think this is dishonest at all. Furthermore it could be regarded as part of the job, ie talking up the value of the horse for bloodstock purposes.
May 10, 2011 at 15:39 #354841Personally, I can’t think of anything much worse than Moore feeling the need to "join the club" and come up with same dreary cliches as many others. Maybe he should throw in that "the lads gave 110%, y’know" too?
I find his answers far from boring – the one i mentioned about the ‘leading jockeys armband’ i found frank, honest, and amusing. The one you mention about The Oaks was refreshingly honest too.
More power to his elbow i say.
May 10, 2011 at 15:56 #354842I’m at a loss why this thread has remained at the top of the Racing discussions board for almost a week but I guess I’m making it remain here a bit longer with my two penneth but here goes.
People cannot be what they are not and Ryan Moore is a private shy man who likes only to get on with the job in hand and is never more happier whilst he’s riding horses The media side of it he clearly doesnt enjoy and he is not obligated to do so. Thats life thats human nature.
I ask some of the more outspoken critics of Mr Moore’s personality to forget who you are and tonight while travelling home wind your windows right down, stick your heads out of the window and sing at the top of your voice Everythings Comin Up Roses For me and My Gal while parked at traffic lights.
You wouldnt do it would you so why should Ryan?

No sane person would sing such rubbish; be they introvert or extrovert. They would instead sing Born To Be Wild, as I have done.

To HIMSELF,
In one post you clearly say "I am not making a judgement on Ryan Moore as a person". But on the other hand you’ve clearly typed "I just happen to think that Ryan Moore comes across on tv as a surly and evasive young man, and unless I see evidence to the contrary, I see no reason to change that opinion"
So you’re not making a judgement but then you go right ahead and judge Ryan. Do you think Moore is not a person when he appears on TV?
Let’s face it the evidence has been reviewed, the jury is in, and you have been decalred guilty of passing judgement as charged.

Seeing as you are obviously vying for some attention from me, I will respond – but only this one time, mind.
How does making an observation about his televison interviews in any way equate to judging him as a person? Not even the most intellectually challenged among us would draw such a conclusion. I have already stated that I do not know and have never met Ryan Moore. He may be, as I alluded to earlier, the life and soul of any party, but when that tv camera and microphone are pointed in his direction, he is, I repeat, surly and evasive,

Chiswickian:
speaking from my own experience, it’s not uncommon to find people somehow not equating the talking heads they see on the box with flesh and blood humans. They think that "anything goes" as far as making personal remarks about these talking heads is concerned, and have no idea that it might seem "personal" or "judgemental". And they are surprised, and often a little dismayed, to find these images behaving like people after all.
It’s all part of the progressive de-nerving of society by the media … but here we’re threatening to get onto

‘s ambiguity in Moore v. The People, m’lud!
May 11, 2011 at 18:39 #354982No ambiguity from me, oh pretentious one.

Pinza, I find it laughable that you are being so uptight over whether some people’s perception of Ryan Moore’s dullness and monosyllabic responses when interviewed is not in keeping with your own.
You hold an altogther different view – that’s fine; not a problem – just refrain from trying to ram that opinion down my throat. Maybe you are a close acquaintance or relative of said jockey ?
As for "talking head": surely where young Ryan Moore is concerned, that term is surely a contradiction in terms.
Oh the irony.

May 11, 2011 at 21:28 #355005The two greatest jockeys that I have seen in my life i.e. Eddery and Pigott didn’t exactly find it necessary to become media darlings. Granted times change , and if top jockeys want to do it, then more power to their publicity elbow, so to speak.
I , for one, find Frankie to be aggravating, but concede that he has probably been good for the sport.
If I was a connection , I would think that it was far more important that a jock was an effective communicator in private, than in front of the media etc., and my belief is that Ryan is more than capable in that field.
So , in my opinion, not dull, very good jockey, and possibly a refreshing change in an age of glib, self promoting sportsmen in other fieldsMay 11, 2011 at 21:49 #355010

I’m sorry,
Himself
, but I’d need you to point out the elements in my general observations which you found "pretentious". I shared my personal experience and observations of the effects of TV "exposure" on the viewer. That is all.
Nobody is exempt. We all tend to feel we "know the person", because we see their head talking regularly on the box in the corner of the room, and feel it’s OK to make judgements on their behaviour and personality as if they were somehow characters in a film, rather than real people in a life that should be respected.
Like
Chiswickian
, I feel that you are guilty of this in judging Moore by your own (doubtless polite and co-operative) standards of behaviour, rather than making the effort to get inside his skin, his personality, and see things from his very special point of view.
But I don’t "judge" you as a person for taking this line. I think your interpretation of Moore’s behaviour is understandable, but not fair. I hope you don’t find this either "pretentious", or more to the point, disrespectful.
I am not related to Moore, I have never met him, and would not invite him (or any other jockey) to my house for afternoon tea, or for any other ritual.

Jockeys have to keep a lot of secrets. And I don’t mean to suggest dishonesty. Just that there’s all sorts of diplomacy around connections and the media and what have you. I think they become saturnine as a matter of habit.

So putting Himself on the spot and intelligently debating him based on his own comments equates to vying for attention? People correctly concluding that Himself has made a judgement about Moore are now intellectually challenged? I guess such a response is all Himself can fire back when his previous comments leave him without a leg to stand on. Semantics are clearly all that remain.
I guess Himself cannot accept that he has passed judgement on Moore based on his perception. He berates others for ramming their opinion down his throat yet has continually restated his own view. What’s good for the goose?
As for "talking head": surely where young Ryan Moore is concerned, that term is surely a contradiction in terms
Concluding your argument by snidely attempting to put Ryan down further does not reinforce your stance IMO it only further weakens it.
No response required I seek no further attention.
