I’d normally be on Ryan Moore’s side when it comes to the media, however if this paragraph in "The Tattenham Corner" section of today’s Guardian is anything to go by, the bloke needs a kick in the arse and quickly.
"Ryan Moore’s notoriously fragile patience with the media reached breaking point with Racing UK presenter Nick Luck at Sandown last Thursday when he was asked, entirely legitimately, to compare last year’s Derby winner, Workforce, on whom he had just won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, with likely King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes rival So You Think, whom he had partnered a few days earlier at The Curragh for Aidan O’Brien. The jockey sighed, smiled, and walked off at the question, his parting words to Luck having to be cut before the interview could be aired."
Nasty young pup.
May 29, 2011 at 13:51 #357791Trouble is that by offering the hacks an opinion on the respective merits of the two horses the jockey risks upsetting connections. Back in the 80s jockey Philip Waldron did exactly that and ended up losing the ride on both horses!
Better to smile enigmatically and decline to answer in a friendly fashion.

The interview with Luck was informative, the culmination amusing (and done in a friendly way). Good on both of them.
Perhaps the Aunt Jemima’s of TRF would have preferred something like this:
Nick:
And how would you compare So You Think and Workforce?
Ryan:
Well Nick, they’re both great horses, and both have tremendous trainers. It’s been a real privilege to ride both of them this season. And I don’t think you can make a comparison, because they’re running style is so different. Should they ever meet, it will be a real sacrifice to get off either of them. Let’s hope Aidan and Sir Michael keep these champions apart!
What guff. Personally, I think a friendly pat on the back, a smile, and a
sotto voce
"f. off, Nick"
said all that in three words, and much more graphically. If you want clear communications, then you got it. And with a slice of the real world added in, as opposed to the prissy media virtual reality preferred by the Aunt Jemimas.
May 29, 2011 at 18:03 #357816Admittedly I didn’t see the interview, so maybe I’m being hasty, although the tone of the Guardian piece suggests I’m not.
..and what are the words
guff
and
Pinza
doing in the same post
May 29, 2011 at 18:44 #357822Very good write up of him by Brough Scott in today’s Racing Post. Fantastic article, and well worth your time to track it down.
May 29, 2011 at 21:52 #357856I saw the interview on RUK after the Brigadier Gerard and Moore came across (as usual) as awkward, nervous and then finally fairly rude.
It really isn’t that hard to show a bit of courtesy is it?
It was hardly Paxman and Howard.
May 29, 2011 at 22:31 #357861Have to confess that I’ve often thought of Ryan Moore as a bit of a misery guts.
May 30, 2011 at 07:41 #357878Yet more evidence, as if any more were needed, that Moore is an unpleasant, ill-mannered lout.

And?
He can’t half ride a horse. If it’s sparkling personality you want, why not try Britain’s Got Talent?

Just out of curiousity, does that mean you would back a horse with his polar opposite (character wise) as opposed to him?

No, there is (unfortunately!) no correlation between a jockey’s ability as a rider and the way he conducts himself in public out of the saddle.
But it’s always nice when jockeys take the trouble to communicate with their fans, and so present themselves (and the sport) in a good light.
Paul Hanagan always comes across as a decent bloke, and the jumping boys have the reputaton of being some of the most approachable people sport.

.. with all the charisma of a dead dandelion.
Whatever we think of Mr Moore or Mr Fallon, they at least have the ability to interest and engage us – even if, as Auntie Venusian puts it so pithily, we find them "louts". Like many racing people I prefer character – even bad character – to dullness.
I haven’t seen many threads devoted to passionate debate about Paul Hanagan’s interest as a human specimen. Though Warrington’s Best was well deserving of that 2010 championship, there’s a strong sense he only holds it on loan.
Not that I’m saying Mr Moore is bad: quite the reverse. He has integrity and articulacy to add to his race-riding strength and intelligence, which is really all that matters.
May 30, 2011 at 15:26 #357961Here is where we stop agreeing – Paul is a great lad, and (as you state) his win was well deserved. I doubt it will be his only win. Hanagan might toe the party line to some extent – but he’s less secure than Ryan Moore, and speaking his mind could be far more costly. He’s only just started getting rides in Group 1’s etc.

Yes indeed – and I should not have been drawn into odious comparisons. Hanagan is an admirable jockey who reminds me not a little of Kevin Darley in his modesty, talent and honesty.

May 30, 2011 at 19:42 #357993i think he comes across a little dull sometimes in contrast to frankie who does a great job but here is the most important fact and this goes for any jockey when he rides a winner for you he’s the bees knees!
