Apologies if this has been discussed before, but what a horrible man he appears to be to try and interview.
He’s as dull as dishwater, and borders on being ignorant and rude sometimes, even argumentative (Cattermole trying to praise him for having three winners for AoB, Moore responding by saying he has lost on two).
Whilst it is not part of the job description for a top class flat jockey to give courteous, insightful interviews all of the time, you’d at least expect a jockey of Moore’s standing to be a bit more outgoing occasionally.
Just my thoughts of course.
May 5, 2011 at 15:05 #353921Who cares?
You’ve answered your own question OE.
He’s a jockey who does not like speaking in public and possibly feels uncomfortable when people praise him. Remember Lester? It’s just his character, and people should not question whether he’s a nice bloke or not, just because he’s not as outgoing as some.
Frankie Dettori might be a horrible bloke in private for all we know, yet because he’s an outgoing, public relations guru; we think he’s a wonderful fella.
They’re both excellent jockeys.
Value Is EverythingMay 5, 2011 at 15:16 #353923He is a very modest individual.
It may come across as ‘rude’ to some people, but he is just modest and gets on with what he does best, and does it very well.
His family will tell you the same, that he is very modest, and quite shy, and isn’t one for telling everyone how good he is.
May 5, 2011 at 15:22 #353924These are both things that I think I read somewhere so do not take it for gospel
Quite a few times I have heard Frankie is not very nice man but just good at PR.
Also I am sure I read of Ryan Moore being given a fine for an altercation with a steward, something large, 1000 pounds springs to mind. I may have got this completely wrong and this happened to someone else!
In any event Ryan is definitely shy and to be honest if any of us had not grown up with cameras in our faces we might reasonably be expected to be nervous.
It does not come across well to the audience but hey the guys great at his job. Perfect ride on Treasure Beach!!
May 5, 2011 at 15:27 #353926I completely concur with both your views, I didn’t suggest he was a horrible or rude man, I said he appears that way (not much difference, granted).
However, if he isn’t going to make an effort when interviewed immediately after a race, then I would have thought it would be in his best interests if he requested beofrehand not to be interviewed.
I don’t think there are many jockeys out there who like a microphone pushed in their face immediately after a winning ride, especially when they haven’t debriefed the trainer and owner, but I can’t think of any who are less talkative than Moore.
It’s irrelevant of course, and I don’t have to watch an attempt to interview him, but it’s just a small part of the sport that I really don’t like.

Thankfully there’s considerable colour range on the palette of the artist painting the eternal racing landscape ……………
There’s something for everyone. Obviously the hard working, self deprecating, determined and thoroughly professional style of Ryan Moore are not for you. Ryan wants to win every race he rides and always looks to improve himself as a jockey. Not everyone can or should be an entertainer.
Thankfully Ryan Moore isn’t just another drunken, boorish, egotistical, opinionated, overpaid ball kicker with a foul mouth, a prostitue on his arm and trail of personal destruction in his wake. Nothing wrong with being down to earth. Mind you that doesn’t suit everyone either.

Please do not bring those horrible, obnoxious, uneducated, selfish, narcissistic people that kick a ball around whilst wingeing and fixing their hair gel onto a racing forum

Nothing dull about the way he rides and thats what matters, not what he says or doesn’t say after a race.
May 5, 2011 at 16:08 #353933I’m with OneEye on this. Moore’s sullen demeanour may be partly due to shyness, but I see it more as a " Go away, I can’t be bothered talking to you or anyone not asscocited with the horse " stance.
If he doesn’t wish to be interviewed, then he should let the relevant people know before hand.
I happened to be watching the racing from Chester on Channel 4 with my youngest daughter. She wanted to know why "that jockey" was being so belligerent and moody. I said Ryan Moore always come across like that on tv. But why, no need for such an attitude – especially after winning a race, she responded.
She has a point. I’d also add that "self-deprecating" is not a term I would associate Ryan Moore with. I’d say, "moody git" would be more appropriate.

Of course it doesn’t matter as a race rider, but as a sports personality it most certainly does. Surely there’s a responsibility that comes with being a champion to open up a little more.
Actualy I’ll re-phrase that. There obviously isn’t a responsibility to open up a little more, but perhaps there should be. Ask the powers that be, or the people trusted with trying to promote the sport who they would want as their champion jockey and I bet a squeaky clean un-cooperative Ryan Moore is close to bottom of their lists.
Of course, it’s just my opinion that he is dull. If we ever engaged in a conversation he would doubtless think I’m dull – that’s if I could get him to express an opinion that is.
May 5, 2011 at 16:33 #353937Jockeys get paid a small flat rate per ride and a percentage share of the prize money.
Footballers at the top clubs get a huge amount of money each week and it doesn’t matter if they win or lose, put in no effort, swear at the cameras, go to bed with any prozzie that comes their way, dive, cheat, whatever.
I respect a jockey like Ryan Moore far more than any footballer, because of what they do when riding.
May 5, 2011 at 17:02 #353942One could add a well known golfer, world class, to the list of ugly people that we don’t need to interview either.
May 5, 2011 at 17:10 #353943C’mon he’s one of the best flat jockeys in the world and if it wasn’t for Hanagan’s jammie bookings and rides I’d be tipping him for the jockey’s championship. He did show his emmotions when doing the classic Oaks, Derby double last year and did comment on the wins. He’s just quite shy and it’s not as if he’s been around for very long. Lay of him, sure he doesn’t like interviews but nor do many jockeys. He’s an amazing jockey and just because he isn’t as flamboyent as Frankie Dettori isn’t something to moan at. We should be glad there’s such a strong proffesional in the sport.
May 5, 2011 at 17:33 #353944in my opinion its good for the sport having perfectionists like moore. yes he may be arrogant, but people on here would be calling him a big head if he boasted all the time like dettori or someone.
May 5, 2011 at 17:33 #353945I think he is just incredibly shy and quiet, as his his dad.
What i do know about Ryan though, is that he’s extremely intense and keen to learn about different aspects of racing. I was at the Craven Sales last month, and who should be there, taking a day off from riding to sit infront of the tele making exstensive notes on every Breeze Up – Ryan, he was with a well known racing figure, learning about bloodstock. He was also there at night time the following 2 days, after he’d had a long days riding.
I don’t think there’s many jockeys out there like him, he is mad keen and is brilliant at what he does.
May 6, 2011 at 00:22 #353989In my opinion Ryan Moore is anything but dull, he is one of the best jockeys around today and has always been known to be on the quiet side.
This demeanor fits in so well with the Coolmore operation where nothing is given away about the chances of a horse until it has left the stalls. Aidan O’Brien himself is a very quiet and personal man but there is none better at getting a horse fit and ready just in time to harvest those Group races.
So many jockeys are over bullish about their mounts, i.e. Richard Hughes on Memory in the Racing Post on Saturday and punters are hit where it hurts most, others just want to please the crowd like Frankie and he is a great ambassador for the sport, but Ryan Moore is a true horseman and professional through and through
and I wish him well on his way to another Jockey championship in 2011. As long as he brings those horses into the winners enclosure he can be as dull as he likes, the man is a genius.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 6, 2011 at 07:03 #354002I think a few are missing my point.
I don’t care if he’s dull, quiet, miserable, shy or whatever, as many of you have pointed out, it’s how he rides that matters most. I’m not criticisng Moore, if that’s how he wants to be then so be it. He is possibly the complete opposite in the company of people he is comfortable at being around.
My point is, as one of the sport’s best jockeys, as a three-time champion jockey, should he not be persuaded to be a little more open to the media and public. Should help be available to him to overcome his shyness if that is indeed what is preventing him from being more open.
Yes Moore comes across as dull and un-cooperative, but my main point is why? If that’s just how he wants to be then yes, he comes across as a bit rude and difficult. But if it’s becasue that’s his natural personality, then encourage the lad to be different – media training, people skills etc. This sort of help is available in almost every other sport – is it not (and if not then why not) available in horse racing?
