For the first time most finns want to join NATO.

Russia annexed Crimea a few years ago. The majority of its population is Russian anyway.

March 4, 2022 at 18:00 #1585734Russia said it would not invade Ukraine.
Russia has proven it will invade a non-NATO country by invading Ukraine. If Finland makes it plain that because Russia invaded a non-NATO country Finland can not trust Russia not to invade them and therefore will (or has) joined NATO.
Russia will see that by invading Ukraine, Russia will now have a NATO country on its border – something Russia said was the reason it invaded Ukraine to prevent.
…This would put massive pressure on Putin’s leadership within Russia.

Having a love of maps and atlases that’s lingered since short-trousered childhood it’s a source of mild irritation that so many cities in the world have had their spelling buggered around with. It will always be Kiev, Kharkov, Lvov and Odessa to me, which are presumably the Russian versions insisted upon during Soviet times
My treasured ‘Times Atlas of the World’ was bought in the late ’80s just prior to the fall of the Soviet Union so has the ‘old’ names. In these grim times it has at least been a pleasure perusing once again its marvellous maps of Eastern Europe
March 4, 2022 at 19:20 #1585748A point perhaps overlooked regarding NATO arming Ukraine: the problem of maintaining supply routes as the war escalates
It’s looking increasingly likely that Russia will soon control the entire Black Sea littoral thus preventing deliveries by sea; and I’m sure blockading the land routes from Poland etc would be a priority if/when the Russians advance on western Ukraine
NATO should concentrate on getting as much into Ukraine now, without delay
As for the attack on the nuclear power station: a crazy act but several versed in modern power station construction have pointed out that the housings for the reactors are seriously over-engineered to withstand earthquakes, bombs…whatever could be chucked at them. Housed in 20cm-thick steel and heavily reinforced concrete. That is, the chances of a radiation leak are minimal
March 4, 2022 at 19:37 #1585750I don’t care if the nuclear plant is newer than Chernobyl. It’s still a nuclear plant and it’s bloody stupid firing at it. I don’t want a minimal chance of radiation escape. I want none. I assume the Japanese nuclear plant was newer than Chernobyl but I’d need to Google that.
March 4, 2022 at 20:26 #1585754Of course nobody wants a nuclear plant to be hit. But am glad it is a newer plant because it’s much much safer if it were to be hit.
Value Is EverythingMarch 5, 2022 at 02:15 #1585774Ginge wrote “Look at what happened in Afghanistan, BigG. Russia left after they could not cope with a
guerrilla war. And as Clive rightly says, Ukrainian guerrillas will have the very best weapons.1 million may sound a large number of people fleeing, but Ukraine is a country of over 43 million
and men of fighting age are not the ones leaving.”It’s true Ginge, the Afghans led the Russian Army a merry dance in Afghanistan, but that was largely
because the Afghans knew the territory like the back of their hands. The Afghans signed a friendly
treaty with Russia not long after the 1st World War, but they were never a part of Russia whereas
Ukraine was.I see the very recent polls show marginal but nonetheless a majority of people asked would consider
joining NATO. I think that those in power will think long and hard before that decision. I think there
is an inevitabillity of a World War if the Finn’s or the Swedes make that decision, the Russians would
not accept either becoming under Nato’s umberella. They would invade stating that this is provocation
from Nato. It would be a disaster. As regards the Resistance fighters, I would have made the same point as Drone that with the Russians
controlling the ports that it would be difficult for supplies of weaponry and ammunition to get through. The clock is ticking on this one and I dread to think where this may go.
March 5, 2022 at 09:01 #1585795Weapons got into to ******* Gaza which is about a mile long

I wouldn’t over worry. This is from a very good source In fact and I avoid cranks and those with an agenda on Twitter like the plague
In #Russia, a prominent Kremlin-close political analyst suggested that the Russian military operation might finish “beyond Ukrainian borders”.
He said #Germany “will be never forgiven for allowing weapons to be sent to #Ukraine”.@GermanyDiplo and @NATO, are you reading this? pic.twitter.com/3hlWs4gDud

March 5, 2022 at 11:12 #1585823Weapons can be brought through Poland, Romania and Slovakia, BigG. Borders of those countries include the Carpathian Mountains.
Value Is EverythingMarch 5, 2022 at 11:27 #1585825Another old and respected hand at reporting from conficts – John Simpson – was at a Finnish-Russian border crossing yesterday and said that there’s been a steady flow of Russians into Finland recently; he opined that this exodus is due to the threat of Martial Law being imposed in Russia due to civil unrest. What doesn’t seem clear is if these seeking refuge are ethnic Russians or Finnish-speaking Karelians
As for Martial Law: if it is imposed there’s a possibility it could backfire on Putin if losses in Ukraine become significant, progress is slow, morale collapses: Martial Law surely makes a coup easier to implement doesn’t it?
Beleaguered Generals: get yourselves and your poor bloody infantry into the Kremlin please, all guns blazing
March 5, 2022 at 12:09 #1585832Finland and Sweden have a significant part to play in persuading Russians (if not Putin) to pull back from Ukraine.
Finland and Sweden can tell Russia that (despite voicing the opposite) Russia has already attacked a non-NATO country and (being non-NATO themselves) can no longer trust Russia not to invade them. Therefore can give an ultimatum that unless Russia gets out of Ukraine ASAP, both Finland and Sweden will have no choice but to immediately join NATO.
Value Is EverythingMarch 5, 2022 at 18:35 #1585884Must be playing havoc with peoples anxiety all this. Mate of mine has taken up smoking after 20 years
Told him not to worry about it. He will be incinerated long before any lung cancer gets a hold

20 years of what?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysMarch 5, 2022 at 19:17 #1585889Presumably after 20 years of not smoking, Purwell.
