Ukrainian president (Volodymyr Zelensky) orders ‘full military mobilization’ to counter attack.
Really? It’s a bit early, don’t you think? Wait a while, EU/NATO will take care of business for you. In fact, the rest of the world is prepared to bleed for you. You ***** stooge of a president and a leader! Why couldn’t you prepare your nation for such eventuality? NATO/EU were mobilizing weeks ago to help you!
February 25, 2022 at 06:48 #1584597As stated ad infinitum, I’ve kept myself to myself for many years – in my life it takes something massive (9/11, a Pandemic first reaching the UK, this) to make me even switch on the TV and watch the news.
I even watch the racing on mute!
But I like to think I learn pretty quickly and it seems to me that The West won’t send their own troops in, Ukraine’s not a NATO country, Putin always knew they wouldn’t and to him the economic cost of sanctions is a price worth paying for bringing Ukraine back under the Russian sphere of influence.
Ukraine is hopelessly outnumbered in terms of military and this won’t even last long.
Sanctions hurt those imposing them as well as those punished by them, the West is already wavering on Swift and Putin will essentially get away with this because he knows the West (rightly IMO) don’t want World War III.
The real danger to the World as a whole comes if Putin makes a similar move on a country which is a member of NATO.
That’s WWIII territory, but Putin knows this.

He must know that NATO’s treaty makes it clear that an attack on one NATO state is considered an attack on all of them. If NATO did nothing in those circumstances, it would raise the question of why NATO even exists.
I believe Putin wants to keep this localised and to get it over with quickly. He knows if he does there is next to no chance of NATO getting involved.
After the debacle of Afghanistan and some disastrous interventions in the Middle East, there is very little appetite in America or Britain to get involved in a conflict far from home and with little to gain.
February 25, 2022 at 07:34 #1584599100% agree with all of THIS^ from CAS.
I do feel sorry for Ukraine, empty gestures like lighting up buildings in yellow and blue plus Twitter hashtags expressing support don’t help, but the absolute bottom line is they’re aren’t in NATO and the global appetite for sending in troops to other countries’s aid is not what it was.
Harold Wilson’s greatest achievement was never sending a single British soldier to Vietnam and all the NATO countries will be following suit on this one.
No one wants WWIII if it can possibly be avoided.

Anyone would think that when countries go to war with each other nobody ever truly wins. If you step in, you end up losing too, whichever side you pick.
Peace and love everyone.
February 25, 2022 at 08:38 #1584601Yep. I agree with Ian and Cas, summed up well.

Good thinking…
Some believe that he will leave eventually, but not before installing a puppet government.
February 25, 2022 at 09:05 #1584604In addition, not that I think this will happen, but if Finland were to come
under NATO this would force Putin’s hand and he wont shirk it. He can’t have
NATO surrounding him and Finland would be on his west flank. I don’t think
Finland want to do it, and I doubt NATO want them to because a response from
Putin would have to be answered by Nato. Biden is shrinking in the polls,
the US would become involved pretty quickly. It’s a recipe for disaster. I hope this is confined to Ukraine, with proper
sanctions, although these would hurt the west as well and they know it. There’s
no easy answer. This will be over in days. Zelenskyy doesn’t seem prepared and
I’d expect his troops to desert with the russian advance, they don’t stand a
chance against Russia. Putin knows the west don’t want to get their feet dirty,
and although there will be a great deal of strong rhetoric from the west, I think
there will be little more than that.February 25, 2022 at 09:29 #1584607Yes let’s not do anything in case anyone gets hurt
Finland. Sweden. Baltic’s Stand back and wring hands
Jesus
A twinge of Putin admiration certainly stinks out this thread that’s for sure
And if people still think that the SLAUGHTER of russian troops is not the best way to stop this idiot I want to know what planet they are living on
There is already a lot of evidence of real u ease I. Their military and public so body bags will do the job. Easy
Only good th8mg about this crisis is that it flushes out the farage trumo corbyn cranks for what they are
February 25, 2022 at 09:34 #1584610Clive not sure why you hate Putin so much, lovely shrewd chap who’s only looking out for the good of his people, not his fault there’s a landmass called Ukraine inside the Russian borders.
February 25, 2022 at 09:35 #1584611I think you have misunderstood Clive. Of course NATO will have to respond if any of those countries are attacked.
I am not convinced those countries should be in NATO. But they are and any Russian attack on them could not be ignored by NATO.
February 25, 2022 at 09:35 #1584612I know that but not everyone is exactly saying that cork
And why shouldn’t they be? They are independent nations. It’s their choice. Not russias. That’s it
You think that France should dictate whether we are in nato ?
February 25, 2022 at 09:41 #1584613“I would just like to say that Owen Jones is an embarrassment to everyone who possesses a centre-left bone in their body”
A truism indeed
What’s he been wittering on about now and have you a link?
I restrict myself to reading his schoolboy polemic in the Graun
February 25, 2022 at 09:47 #1584614And before we get nonsense about Russia being under threat from nato states because of Hitler invasions, Ukraine was driven to famine deliberately by Russia in the 30s and Russia tried and failed to invade Finland
They should have been in nato now
They have far more historic reasoning to be so.
February 25, 2022 at 10:01 #1584615Say what you want about Owen Jones but he does unite people. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t think he talks complete cobblers.
February 25, 2022 at 10:06 #1584616Clive, do you really think it would be a good idea for Finland to become a member of NATO ?
Who exactly do you think should “slaughter” the Russian Troops ?
