Happy to have him back for good but we won’t be paying £5.5m

It’s been a really disappointing month or so at the Madjeski & have written off our chances of winning the title
Would love to think we can make it to the last match of the season (v Brum at home) with a chance of getting automatic promotion, but going on the last few performances would not be surprised if we finished 5th. Getting knocked out of the Play-Offs by Cardiff is not something to look forward to
March 29, 2009 at 02:01 #218995Don’t think we paid £5.5m outright, some of the fee is based upon appearances / goals.
Could be fun to see what reception he gets if he comes back to the bearpit next season, depending on you getting promotion and us surviving

"bearpit" … Stoke? Oh, yeah….
I think the phrase is "deal with it".
You bought into part of the package and found that that aprt of the package couldn’t succeed on it’s own. One of the prinicipal reasons Kitson was successful at Reading was because part of a good team.

and here’s me thinking Reading got relegated for being crap
March 29, 2009 at 02:46 #219008They got relegated because after one successful season in the top league they were rumbled and didn’t have a strong enough Plan B. It’s a problem facing a lot of the less affluent clubs once they get into the Premier League and has been dubbed ‘second season syndrome’. Dare I suggest that Stoke City’s Plan A relies just a tad on Rory Delap? I must admit it is amusingly effective at p*ssing off a few sides who consider themselves superior!
When it comes to it I think the likes of Reading and Stoke are destined to be ‘twilight clubs’ whose best ambition is hanging on in the Premier League.
Anyway my season ticket holder Mum tells me that Reading are in fact always brilliant and that any failing is due to:
a) biased refereeing
or
b) cheating opposition
or
c) a balanced combination of the above. As one who nowadays spends most of his time watching games as a neutral, Reading not exactly being local to me since 2006, I do try to convince her that maybe there are deeper reasons! When I do get to see them these days I put ‘the hex’ on them anyway.
They may still scramble a promotion place in what is turning into a pretty mediocre league this season. I wouldn’t be confident of winning the play-offs.

The presence of something orange and unpleasant at the top of it would suggest as much. Come on Reading, get it together. You know McCarthy’s lot will bottle it if you put them under pressure.
April 26, 2009 at 16:11 #223718Despite their poor form of recent times, Reading still find themselves with a chance of automatic promotion. It relies on a win at relegation threatened Norwich on Monday and a win against Birmingham, with Sheffield United failing at Palace. The odds are still against but the chance is there.
Following the contrary way things have gone it wouldn’t surprise me if they blow it at Norwich and then go and beat Birmingham …….

So it does come down to that last match after a decent win tonight
I think we can turn Brum over, but worry about the need for a Warnock team to do us a favour…
April 28, 2009 at 14:11 #224074Oh, I think Warnock will be trying for you, Perpetual. Isn’t there enough emnity between him and certain of those currently associated with Sheffield United (not least Kevin Blackwell) for him to want to stick one on them?

May 3, 2009 at 21:08 #225389In the end Birmingham finished it off with a win to clinch the promotion spot.
Play-offs for Reading, though they are at least playing a bit better than in March and early April.
Consolation for me was that Didcot Town, my locals up to 2006, continued their progression and will play in the Southern League Premier Division next season after a play-off victory. Hope Reading can follow suit.
May 3, 2009 at 23:09 #225432Great atmosphere today and shame Reading couldn’t make the most of it, but agree we’ve got a chance in the play-offs now they’re playing more like the side that looked unbeatable before Xmas
The only positive news was Cardiff missing the play-offs – the most horrible set of fans I’ve ever come across (one drunken slob tried to trip up my 9yr old son on Boxing Day – scumbags)
June 2, 2013 at 15:57 #441604What do people think of Reading’s chances next season? 11/1 at Coral to win outright and if they can keep the players of last season the seasons experience in the Prem could see them bounce back.

June 7, 2013 at 10:39 #442035I’m on at 11’s have gone each/way 1st 3 at 1/4 odds as a bit of insurance and will keep nibbling away at it. I see Atkins has already got one over Redknapp in signing Wayne Bridge.

June 8, 2013 at 18:41 #442205Could be on to something there Nath, out of the three to be relegated i’d certainly fancy Reading the most to come straight back up. Harry reportedly unhappy that the QPR board didn’t do more to get Bridge, how long is Harry going to stay there?
I’m on Ipswich at 20s, Big Mick took charge of them when they were rock bottom, ending up finishing a respectable 14th. Memory is slightly sketchy but i’m sure he took Wolves up, so has experience getting out this division. Hopefully when the fixture list is released they’ll get a nice easy start to!
June 8, 2013 at 22:05 #442222My mate is an Ipswich fan and I agree they finished the season very well. Plenty of experience has Mick at getting teams promoted, shame he cant keep them there. QPR have the talent but at times they didn’t look that interested when in the Premiership let alone the Championship also they will be the team that everyone wants to beat, every team they face will be up for it as if it’s a Cup final.
