This time last year I put the Royals up as decent bet for relegation, but for 2008/09 it’s….Championship winners (this is one that Tom Segal’s going to get wrong)
Ladbrokes is the place & 7/1 e/w 1-2-3 is great value
We look invincible at home scoring 19 & conceding 3 in the last four games with every attack looking like it’s going to end in a goal
Player out…
Sonko – no loss & we won’t concede so many penalties now
Kitson – sad to see him go but his replacement (Noel Hunt – Steven’s brother) has instantly gelled with Kevin Doyle and they are fast becoming a great pairing. We’re also £5m in credit on the deal
Shorey – fantastic in our first Premiership season, but played like he’d already left for the final 3 months of last seasonPlayers in…
N Hunt – looks to be another Coppell bargain at £500k and has most of his brothers good attributes
Kebe – not new this year but looks to be acclimatising and could be a revelation down the left
Andre Bikey – again, not new but looks a total class this season
Academy boys – 2 or 3 breaking through (Jem Karacan, Alex Pearce, James Henry) all of whom look comfortable on the ball and could make itWhat’s going to stop us….
Birmingham, Wolves and may be Sheff Utd with their £30m (if they get it in time to spend) of course, but the key is taking the home form away. Hopefully this will start v Wolves tomorrow night. Even if we get beaten at Molineux, it is only a matter of time before it ‘clicks’ on the roadThe other danger is we lose 2 or 3 key players in the next transfer window, but it’s the same for all teams in this division
So there you go, if you want a bit of interest in the Championship you could do a lot worse than Reading at 7/1 and may trade a lot shorter after tomorrow night….
September 30, 2008 at 04:33 #182807I’m already on Birmingham at 7’s and am happy with that.
Wolves are going great at the moment, but I feel they will just come up short in the long run. Reading are one of the first teams I look for on the coupon when they’re at home and have done me well so far and I reckon they’re an excellent shout to finish in the top three.
There’s usually one team in the Championship who come through with a surprise run, maybe someone like a Charlton, Derby or Bristol City could get in the shake up?

Fairly accurate analysis IMO Z.
I go down every week and Birmingham have been awful so far this season.
But the fact that we’re still second is injecting a lot of confidence. We have more strikers than a mine in the eighties but the manager still hasn’t worked out his preferred formation.
I’m not normally optimistic about our chances but I’d be amazed if we don’t finish above Wolves as we have a large squad (not always a great think agreed) but if Wolves were to lose Keightly for example in January they would suffer big time.
Birmingham and Reading 1st and 2nd for me with Wolves missing out in the play offs again.

October 1, 2008 at 00:15 #182907perpetual, do you fancy buying kitson back, at the moment he’s turning into a rather expensive ‘midfielder’ down at the brittania stadium
October 1, 2008 at 02:02 #182917Cheers Strawbear, but the only reason I’d want him back now is because 2 of my kids have his name on the back of their shirts

Good result for the Royals tonight…
October 1, 2008 at 12:43 #182935Yes, very good result. Nice to see Wolves taken down a peg or two.
Disappointed with our result. Five mins to go and conceeding an equaliser away at Derby ruined an otherwise good night.

I see the best price now is 9/2 after yesterday’s demolition of Wolves.

Still fairly good value IMO
October 5, 2008 at 15:38 #183461Best now 11/4

Reading not at their best yesterday but still saw off Burnley 3-1
What about Birmingham? I saw the first half and they didn’t look like league winners but if they keep winning then will have every chance
Good to see Wolves losing….
October 29, 2008 at 03:12 #186966Hit the post 3 times tonight & dominated for 80 mins but still got beaten by Burnley

Same thing happened at Preston last week with a boring 0-0 game v QPR in between
So, still playing well and just need a bit of luck to bring the confidence back
December 21, 2008 at 04:04 #198384Time to pull this one to the top….
3-1 over Brum today puts us back in the top 2. Bring on 2009
December 21, 2008 at 14:42 #198405Super result yesterday and with Reading being so strong at home i think the away games will make the difference.
To play away.
Southampton, Swansea, QPR, Doncaster, Derby, Sheff Wed, Plymouth, Palace, Coventry, Blackpool and Norwich.
Don’t see to many problems for Reading there. The home games are tougher but Reading are pretty solid at home are in good form and i for one cant see them not playing in the premiership next season.

December 21, 2008 at 15:31 #198412Well done Perpetual. Looks like your e/w bet is home and hosed and you have a decent shout at the win.
December 21, 2008 at 16:10 #198417Very happy in the North household after yesterday’s result. Mum and my brothers are season ticket holders at the MadStad. ‘Yours Truly’ managed to put a ‘hex’ on the team when he travelled south as they lost 2-1 to Southampton………
Steve Coppell was talking of leaving following relegation, but there was a major campaign by Reading supporters that he should stay on the basis that there weren’t any better managers out there. He’s got the job done at this level once before and he’ll do it again.
December 22, 2008 at 17:38 #198649Reading are the best team I have seen this season at the open house of Ashton Gate the 4-1 success was fully deserved. Pity our own season is crashing back to league One.
If you can hang onto Doyle In January Wolves are there for the taking.
Good luck
December 24, 2008 at 16:56 #198997Thanks all
I’m confident Reading will go up but would love it to be as winners (for a few a couple of reasons!) and not as runner up
Nathan makes a valid point about who we have left to play away, having already visited all the other top 6 clubs, but so far we have always upped our game for the big matches and been a little disappointing against struggling teams (Southampton, Doncaster & Norwich recently). This is something I’m sure Mr Coppell’s working on to make sure they don’t become complacent
The other issue is the transfer window & expect interest in Doyle and S Hunt. Would be really disappointed if Doyle went but expect Hunt to go but reckon we have the squad to absorb that loss
Good luck to all your teams for 2009 – except when playing the Royals!
