Western Rules had a good go but was just foiled at 7/1. Just one qualifying race tomorrow then a free day on Wednesday as it’s all Class 4 and lower.
TUESDAY AUGUST 25
Bangor
1.35 Chirico Vallis 136; New Quay 134; Authorizo 134
Not particularly confident about the top rated in a race full of question marks. Has run well after a break on occasion though and is a course winner.August 25, 2020 at 14:06 #1498779Every thing fell into line today, Chirico Vallis doing the business very comfortably at 10/1. Relishes the soft ground and the SP amazed me, though slightly galling that Betfair SP was about the same! Still a cracking bet.
Not sure if it’s true in terms of absolute returns, but this method seems to give best results at the times I would normally consider to be the toughest, notably early season and when the going changes quickly. I suspect it’s because of the counter-intuitive nature of some of the selections which tend to steer clear of obvious favourites.
No qualifying races tomorrow Wednesday August 25 but, weather permitting, 4 races for rating on Thursday.
August 26, 2020 at 00:11 #1498815Nice one Rob, won well too.
I nearly broke my midweek ban today for the other JP runner Bhutan, but thankfully sat it out.
August 26, 2020 at 20:23 #1498867Thanks Bobby, the pieces fell into places at Bangor. One for you in the Sedgefield race below!
4 races reduced to three as 2 of the 5 in Beverley 4.05 haven’t run in handicaps.
THURSDAY AUGUST 27
Sedgefield
2.50 Before Midnight 133; Oscar Rose 128; Alexander The Grey 121Chelmsford
2.40 Protected Guest 101; Infrastructure 95; Gifts Of Gold 94Beverley
2.30 Hayadh 109; Le Chiffre 101; Shawaamekh 100August 27, 2020 at 14:30 #1499009Somewhat late in the day, but three non-runners at Sedgefield, so revised 2.50 top 3 are
Alexander The Grey 121; Kitty’s Light 120; Arthur’s Sixpence 119
August 27, 2020 at 15:48 #1499012Blank today, but they weren’t an inspiring set of races though Hayadh ran well for a long way at a decent price.
Not a huge amount of qualifying races tomorrow as Hamilton lost their meeting as it succumbed to the continuing wet weather up here. Fingers crossed Perth survives for their televised meeting on Sunday.
FRIDAY AUGUST 28
Fontwell
3.15 Beat The Judge 156h; Master Work 144; Ashutor 131
Top rated has a high hurdles figure and early chase efforts are encouraging, though collateral through Ashutor gives the latter a strong chance.Goodwood
2.30 Lady Lynetta 102; Hateya 101; Strict Tempo 98Newmarket
4.50 Chairmanic 113; Many A Star 108; Endowed 103
A strong looking Class 3 contest. Any further rain would aid the chances of the top rated.August 28, 2020 at 20:14 #1499089Races today were carved up by non-runners due to the rain, so a bit of a washout.
Similar might apply tomorrow though weather is forecast to be a bit better. Not a huge amount of handicap action fro a Saturday though.
SATURDAY AUGUST 29
Newmarket
2.45 Ascension 104; Evening Sun 102; Dancinginthewoods 102
Ascension looked to be crying out for this ground on his last run on fast ground on the Rowley Mile. He’s also had a wind op, so every chance he will be a different horse on his return.
3.20 Mondain 106; Fox Vardy 104; Amazing Red 103Goodwood
2.25 Cold Stare 116; Breath Of Air 108; Oh This Is Us 107; Battered 107
4.45 Kryptos 90; Sword Beach 89; Lawn Ranger 88; Badenscoth 88Redcar
6.15 Mosakhar 102; Archaeology 99; King Ragnar 96August 29, 2020 at 12:11 #1499150Apologies to Ascension, he’s been gelded rather than wind operation! Race has cut up from 8 to 4 which is pain given that the selection is well suited by conditions.
A few non-runners but only one is top rated:
Goodwood 4.45 Sword Beach 89; Badenscoth 88; Exec Chef 87
August 29, 2020 at 18:56 #1499246A successful day for the top rated, with both cold Stare 13/2 and Ascension 5/2 getting the conditions that they revel in. Mondain was a creditable 10/1 2nd to a rapid improver Believe In Love that my ratings can’t keep up with! Badenscoth was a 2nd top rated winner at 7/1.
A very decent card at Perth tomorrow alongside the third day of the Goodwood meeting. Hopefully conditions will have dried out a bit, but I will update tomorrow if there are any significant non-runners.
Goodwood
1.50 Margaret Dumont 94; Alemagna 90; Point In Time 88
2.25 Atalanta’s Boy 105; Chairmanoftheboard 104; Typhoon Ten 103
3.00 Fiji 107; Overwrite 106; It’s Good to Laugh 105Perth
2.40 Native Fighter 149; Bootlegger 142; Dear Sire 141
3.15 Soupy Soups 149; Fortunes Hiding 147; The Young Master 146August 29, 2020 at 23:29 #1499281Well played again Rob.
August 30, 2020 at 10:15 #1499308Thanks. Really was being looked after yesterday as Cold Stare finally got conditions and Ascension was an amazingly generous price (I’d expected 6/4).
August 30, 2020 at 16:54 #1499369A rattling good weekend with 3 winners today, Atalanta’s Boy 6/1, Native Fighter 13/2 and Soupy Soups 13/2. The other two top rated just couldn’t pick up in the ground.

Southwell
2.40 Doc Sportello 100; Zylan 97; Aleef 94;Ripon
1.20 Danyah 111; Crownthorpe 101; Hesslewood 100
2.20 Gamesters Icon 100; Mukhayyam 98; Sarvan 98
The Billy Nevett Memorial Handicap a favourite of mine ever since my brother and I landed a big forecast in the 80s when this was a 6 furlong 3yo handicap. Gamesters Icon is stepped up in class, but was progressive last autumn on soft/heavy and won’t have been favoured by quick ground on return last time.Sandown
3.00 Aljady 112; Glamorous Anna 111; Desert Safari 109
6.25 Cardano 97; Win o’Clock 96; Moomba 91August 31, 2020 at 19:32 #1499433One winner today, Aljady cruising home by 6 lengths at 7/4 and presumably now destined to move into Pattern company. A reverse forecast in the Sandown 6.25, Win O’Clock 11/4 beating Cardano 18/1. Dipped out in the Billy Nevitt Memorial, won by Poet’s Dawn which I would have struggled to make a case for.
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 1
Kempton
3.45 Radetsky 99; Tipperary Jack 97; Badri 97
4.15 Al Dawodiya 102; Nigel Nott 98; Batchelor Boy 94Newton Abbot
6.00 Mr Mafia 141; Gangster 135; Captain Buck’s 134 (not going to argue with the top 2 here!)
6.30 Constancio 137; Teqany 136; Karakoram 136September 1, 2020 at 20:44 #1499507Nothing from top rated today. Two races tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2
Uttoxeter
3.15 Before Midnight 142; Forecast 138; Oscar Rose 137h
A lot of these are struggling at the moment. Top rated makes seasonal debut but has a decent record fresh and form generally reads well enough to put him right in with a chance.Lingfield
2.10 Lottie Marie 101; Waliyak 100; Folk Dance 95
Top rated here is a big outsider but I suspect she might get a bit closer than odds suggest.September 2, 2020 at 19:37 #1499601Near miss at Uttoxeter, Before Midnight second at 10/1.
Three races tomorrow which I hope can serve up a present on my 60th birthday!*
Salisbury
3 40 Theotherside 108; Wedding Date 101; Lady Of Aran 99Haydock
3.20 Rainbow Jet 90; Arctic Fox 89; Tonyx 88
3.50 Hochfeld 103; Kasaman 97; Toronto 93*Still feel 20 in my head…, until I do anything strenuous!
September 3, 2020 at 19:55 #1499739Wishing you a very happy birthday Rob.
September 3, 2020 at 20:29 #1499745Thanks Sporting Sam! Sadly the number of presents received seems to diminish with the years and the ratings didn’t add to the total! Toronto ran a creditable second at 18/1, but the winner was a handicap newcomer that probably won’t spend and awful lot of time in that sphere. Expect to see Without A Fight contesting a Pattern in the near future.
Level of action ramps up significantly with a very busy Friday, headed by a very decent Ascot card alongside Thirsk’s card which would normally be their Saturday Ladies Day.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 4
