Races cut up at Goodwood with a significant going change from Sunday. Hopefully tomorrow’s entries will have the gonig change factored in and there won’t be as many non-runners.

Tomorrow sees a couple of Goodwood handicaps but also a card of 0-90 Class 3 handicaps for the Racing League at Newcastle. Can’t say this project is particularly welcome becin it’s a closed shop, and haven’t investigated the latter in depth as yet, but they look pretty run of the mill fare. If there is one that catches the eye it’s the Irish filly Bright Idea who has threatened to win a decent handicap in Ireland and could be too good for the rest in the 8.25.
At Goodwood either Alfaadhel is snip of the year in what used to be the ‘Extel’ or is flattered by an inflated rating via quirk of the method! The three-year-old sprint looks a tight ‘un. Ironically now drying ground could be the problem runner wise rather than the soft.

I’m happy with the ratings though and it will be disappointting if I’m somewhere near with both races. Single Top: 138/843 returning 804.92A decent return from the top three of 47% winners. Single top selection is proving a better marker than using the shortest of the top 3 in the betting, in direct contrast to results from the Irish Ratings thread. Returns from single top are 95.4% at SP which is very decent from blind support of one horse in each race and I suspect stands well against comercially available ratings, particularly at the most competitve end of the handicapping spectrum.
The above notwithstanding I was disappointed overall with July results, though with some judicious filtering did manage to turn a profit on my over bets over the period.

While I think this project is flawed it does present a batch of crackable handicaps at ‘my level’. Good profit from backing the top three at Newcastle last week, headlined by 20/1 winner in joint top rated Pearl Beach. Rain forecast for tomorrow so presumably any withdrawals will bash a hole in some teams’ resources, as if it matters.
Once again I’ve thrown in the feature race at Brighton which is the Challenge Cup, though this race is a light of former days when won by top class animal Park Top in the 60s. She won it twice and as a 3yo had previously won the Ribblesdale Stakes.
