Three of the first four in top 4 rated in York’s opener today. Hopefully we can manage a winenr in the later races.

A busy day tomorrow with decent handicaps at a number of meetings. Top rates for the Ebor are unraced this season but first two look very interesting and have put them up on the Ebor 2021 thread in the Big Races section. Melrose could be an even tougher one to crack but I’ve got King Of The Castle top rated and this one’s figure comes out of a second in a very strong renewal of the Ulster Derby. Matched up against useful animals in maidens and broke his duck last time.

A Pint Of Bear has a choice of the last at York on Saturday or the Sunday Series sprint at Sandown on Sunday. Gone close twice in very decent contests and, although not quite top rated, I’m expecting a big run whichever race he goes for. Royla Birth who is top for the Sandown race has a dubious figure based on much superior artificial surface form.

A decent sprinkling of winners in recent days. Pleasing to see that Tonto’s Spirit, a standing dish at Cartmel, obliged once again at 7/2.

Generally low key stuff and small fields for the next couple of days. It’s my birthday at the end of the week and we are away for a couple of days in the Borders, but I will endeavour to post the ratings for each day if I am able. Luckily the 48 hours declarations mean I can stay ahead of the game with Sunday the only potential problem. Talking of Sunday, I notice Perth are carding the ‘Keep Your Social Distance’ Handicap Chase which is a sign of the times!

A so-so month in August top rated wise, 27 winners from 155 selections returning 130.90. I’ve manged to turn over a profit on my betting by concentrating on progressive horses, that is horses that have reached a career peak in their last outing. Also helped by the fact that I backed the worng horse at Epsom yesterday and it won, Recon Mission who didn’t figure in the top ratings!

Top 3 returns are round 48% winners, which is satisfying, although there have been small fields of late which has helped. Difficult to avoid hte winenr in a 3 runner race!

Racing League returns tomorrow so extra action at my focussed level.

I’m away for the weekend so putting up Friday and Saturday ratings in advance. Not sure if I will have time to do the figures for Sunday’s handicaps, and there are a few, so might have to give that day a miss. For al lthat I rate handicaps by far the closest race of the two days is the 2.30 Classified Stakes at Ascot on Friday, 5lbs covering the 8 runenrs in the ratings. I include these races because they are effectively level weight races for closed rated runners and I have handicap figures for all of them.

Nice to see an Optional Claiming Handicap back on the roster at Pontefract on Friday. These were introduced a couple of years back but then put on ice when crowds were absent due to the Covid pandemic. A couple of traienrs appear to have taken the allowance for a claiming price.

Two small field jumps races tomorrow and the top rated in each appears to have a penalty kick. Amalfi Doug who has been running consistently takes on 4 out of form opponents and it’s rarely on this project that I’ve had anything as far clear on recent form. Dead Right would have a decent shout at his best, but comes off a long lay-off. At Newton Abbot it’s shades of the old days as small fields go on fast ground in Devon, though Newton Abbot do water and it can’t be that bad. Tobefair really should pick up his opponents and carry them if anywhere near his best.

Meanwhile the staying contest at Newcastle sees a group of handicappers that are in the pocket of the official ratings. Ratings don’t give any strong clues and it’s probably a case of which horse is up for it on the day.
