Results have picked up again in recent days and Brain The Snail was a satisfying winner at 11/1. One of these instances where you have a proven performer at class, course and distance allowed to start at surprisingly long odds.

This Friday was always a must go to Newbury day when I was down south. Some decent handicaps as a prelude to a quality weekend.

A low key ‘change of the seasons’ day today, with just a couple of winners from top 3.

    SATURDAY OCTOBER 24

    Kelso
2.33 Some Chaos 165; Claud and Goldie 163; The Hollow Ginge 162; Chidswell 162

    Doncaster
    1.10 Tulip Fields 127; Cepheus 113; Iconic Choice 113
2.20 Came From The Dark 114; Venturous 113; Orvar 110
    4.05 Breanski 106; Bear Force One 103; Musicality 103

    Newbury
    4.45 Tempus 112; Surrey Pride 110; Chatez 105

    Cheltenham
    3.15 Honest Vic 161; Goodbye Dancer 161; Flinck 156
    3.50 Frodon 175; Bob Mahler 172; Cogry 171
    5.00 Young Turk 140; Alminar 138; Ballymalin 136

Interesting one for me is second rated in the staying chase at Kelso (2.33) CLAUD AND GOLDIE. Very lightly raced for a veteran and arguably still on the upgrade. Has been produced fit first time before and Sandy Forster will have this one ready.

A cracking day with Some Chaos 11/4 (and top-2 forecast with a 14/1), Tulip Fields 9/1, Honest Vic 12/1 and Frodon 9/2.

Plenty of rain about so I’ve given top 4 for each race tomorrow just in case of non-runenrs.

    SUNDAY OCTOBER 25

    Aintree
    1.22 One Style 159; Sametegal 152; Perfect Candidate 151; Brother Tedd 151
    1.57 Really Super 168; Oldgrangewood 167; Cracking Destiny 163; Magic Saint 159
    3.07 Neverbeen To Paris 141; Yes No Maybe So 136; Three Ways 136; Dell’Arca 132; Vancouver 132
3.42 Caius Marcius 161; En Meme Temps 159; Jolly’s Cracked It 158; Marlborough Sounds 157

    Wincanton
2.52 Worthy Farm 155; (Manofothemountain 142*); Step Back 137; Beau De Brizais 133
    * ran today so likely non-runner

I’ll update the updated figures for performance of the ratings tomorrow. I had assumed the wheels would have come off by now but, after a very poor September, method has bounced back in the last 2 weeks and top rated still nicely in front. Suppose I’ll have to keep going for my faithful reader!

Lovely work today Rob. I’m interested in Really Super tomorrow too and put her in the antepost comp.

Hi greenasgrass. Yes, that Market Rasen form looks very solid and as a 6yo you must suspect there’s still some improvement in the locker. The flat win at Chelmsford was encouraging.

3.07 is a bit of a carve up. Amended top 3 are:

    Three Ways 136; Dell’Arca 132; Legalized 131

    Results update

    Top Rated: 90/638 (14.1%) Returns 688.46 (108%)
    5lbs Clear: 21/131 (16%) Returns 158.91 (121.3%)

Still a decent margin which is very pleasing for blind backing of top rated in competitive races. I’ve avoided posting those races where there were a number of handicap newcomers, but total results show 111% so maybe the newcomers aren’t the foe I feared.

Jumps returns have produced most of the profit, though the flat really struggled in September.

    MONDAY OCTOBER 26
    Redcar
1.15 Al Erayg 97; Stone Soldier 96; Striding Edge 94

    Leicester
2.00 Win O’Clock 103; Buriram 99; Natural History 95 (Natural History had a tough race at Newbury on Saturday so this will presumably be a match)
    2.35 King Carney 114; Walhaan 110; Hartswood 108

Nothing above Class 4 on Tuesday so a day off.

Win O’Clock won the match at Leicester 4/9.

A couple of races tomorrow, with another contest at Kempton having only 3 out of 6 have handicap form.

    WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28

    Nottingham
    2.50 Chicago Doll 102; Orin Swift 100; Multellie 95

    Taunton
3.10 Foreign Secretary 140; Nebuchadnezzar 140; Friend Or Foe 135

    2.15 Ghalyoon 114; Magical Wish 112; Huraiz 111

    Newton Abbot

Top all out in the 3.28 at Newton Abbot so here are the amended ratings for the record:

    FRIDAY OCTOBER 30 (Amended for non-runners 9:20am 30/10)

    Wetherby
    1.35 Fin And Game 141; William H Bonney 137; Jamacho 134
    2.10 Sizing Platinum 164; Charmant 164; Huntsman Son 162
3.20 Smiths Cross 140; Ballyvic Boru 127; Some Reign 126

    Newmarket
    2.20 *
3.30 Kryptos 96; Awake My Soul 88; Dolphin Vista 88
    4.05 Badenscoth 103; Modmin 103; Mascat 101

    * The 2.20 has two runners and they are joint top rated, so toss of a coin is advised. That aside, there has been much whining from connections about the level of prize money but that rather falls flat when just 2 horses turn up for an £11,500 pot.

Top rated winner was Ballyvic Boru at 7/2 (Smiths Cross NR) 2nd rated Awake My Soul won at 5/1 and 3rd rated Huntsman Cross won at 14/1. Still get the impression the turning of the seasons is keeping the success rate down.

Heavy rain forecast tomorrow which may have a bearing on results and non-runner numbers. I give top 4 and joints for each race jsut in case.

    SATURDAY OCTOBER 31

    Ascot
    1.55 Little Light 157; Ibleo 156; Molineaux 154; Flaminger 150
    3.05 Byron Flyer 157; Caius Marcius 155; Countister 149; Scaramanga 147
3.40 Django Django 176; Whatmore 173; Mister Malarky 171; Walk In The Mill 170; Regal Encore 170

    Wetherby
1.35 Niven 133; Bollin Ace 133; Minella For Me 132; Thomas Todd 130
3.55 Shang Tang 155; War Lord 154; Calum Gilhooley 136; Henrietta Bell 135

    Ayr
    1.42 Strong Economy 135; Craiganboy 130; Caltex 125; She’sasupermack 123
2.17 Skipthescales 141; Better Getalong 137; Off The Hook 137; Planet Nine 136
    2.52 Drumconnor Lad 144; Clan Legend 143; Ardera Cross 143; Flowery 138
    3.27 McGowan’s Pass 154; Goobinator 143; Hasankey 136; Saint Freule 135

One top rated winner today, Drumconnor Lad at 7/2, a liberal sprinkling of places and Minella For Me won at Wetherby. The 3.27 at Ayr was 1-2-3 but not quite in rating order! Almost as frustrating was the 3.55 at Wetherby where the top four filled 2nd to 5th places in a 19 runner race!

    Decent meeting at Carlisle tomorrow

    SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1

    Carlisle
3.10 Silva Eclipse 149; West to The Bridge 148; Teescomponents Lad 146
    3.45 Sojourn 149; Fortified Bay 145; The Delray Munky 138; Amateur 138

Today’s races quite well covered, Sojourn won the 3.45 at 11/4 and the four top rated occupied in the first four places. £273 Trifecta for those playing the combinations.

    Top Rated: 94/668 Returns 702.65
    5lbs Clear: 21/134 Returns 158.91

Profit margin has been whittled away during September/October but I would hope today’s accuracy signals an uptick in performance. All things equal I’ll start betting myself after the finish of the turf flat season, old habits die hard and all that!

    MONDAY NOVEMBER 2

    Plumpton
1.55 Langer Dan 147; Vive Le Roi 142; Gunnery 142
    3.05 Constancio 126; Harefield 124; Meteorite 124; Brambledown 124; Officer Drivel 124

    Kempton
5.05 Sky Defender 111; Sweet Promise 110; Lawn Ranger 109

Not a day to get heavily involved. Plumpton races don’t look easy, the 3.05 in particular is tough and Constancio keeps popping up as well handicapped without being able to take advantage. The Kempton race is a decent contest but a number of well exposed sorts seems evenly matched.
