Many have rated Canford Clifs on his defeat of RVW, but AoB made it clear before the race that a second Sussex wasn’t part of the plan.
Too close between the big 2 to call with any confidence, imo.I agree, I think Rip was undercooked in that race but Canford looked to win with a bit in hand, not sure Rip could’ve won at his best. I’ll add that Rip didn’t show his best in the Irish Champion and QEII (when he was physically at his best) because of rain affected ground, which must have been frustrating to AOB.
On lengths alone can’t choose CC, but looked to have plenty in hand over Dick Turpin and undercooked Rip to the eye. Also superior to Paco Boy to the eye. There are also formlines that suggest CC should be on her level (Dick Turpin close-up to Goldi in the Foret over 7f, Paco Boy form). I think CC will beat her on Good to Firm as well, but obviously this is the acid test.
June 13, 2011 at 04:46 #360411I have been led to believe that Cape Blanco has been specially prepared for this race.Aidan would love to have him win at Ascot for his new client.Mr.Hay is also eager to meet the Queen just like the lads did at Epsom.Aidan has promised that that will happen.Thay is what I have been led to believe.

Win: Goldikova
Eachway: Rio De La PlataJune 13, 2011 at 14:39 #360489Couldn’t agree more with what’s been said above about Canford Cliffs, I think he’s been over rated and his raw form reads better than it’s worth.
I adore Goldikova, would adore seeing her get her head in front.
June 13, 2011 at 15:12 #360495name me a horse what goldi has beat that you think CC can’t.
June 13, 2011 at 15:26 #360505Exactly Del Boy.
Canford did nothing but progress in every race last season. He has grown over the winter and will be a lot stronger and won the lockinge after over 200 days off the track at little more than a hack canter to blow away the cobwebs. This season will see him in his prime, the best is still yet to come starting tomorrow.

June 13, 2011 at 16:11 #360515Canford Cliffs is far from ‘overated’. He does what he needs to do to win and as for last years milers being useless – Makfi beat Goldikova! I was very intetested to see that the horse Goldikova beat into second on her debut won a Group 3 in Longchampre today. However, the form of the Lockinge looks good with the second winning another race in Italy. So come on Canford must defeat Goldikova on what there has been to see.

You could use the exact same argument the other way.
It’s going to be a cracker.
June 13, 2011 at 18:58 #360543Can not wait for Goldikova to win….
Its going to be immense looking at all the egg on people’s faces.
June 13, 2011 at 19:03 #360546All over Goldikova. Day one nap!
June 13, 2011 at 19:05 #360547Big fan of Canford Cliffs. Big fan of Goldokova.
We may arguably not have seen the best of ‘Double C’ yet, and he could put on a real ahow tomorrow.
A great meeting in prospect and we don’t have to wait too long to see the star of the show – Goldikova in the opener.
Hard to envisage another horse running this week that will ever achieve what she has. She is something very special and adored throughout the world.
A true superstar, who has demonstrated class, courage, consistency and longevity during her career, beating some damn fine horses in the process.
A superb encounter awaits.

June 13, 2011 at 19:33 #360552I don’t know how sure people can be of the winner of this race, purely because of the caliber of the opposition, namely the opposing favorite. I was sure I’d be backing Goldikova at 13/8, but that’s dried up now and I don’t know if I’m as tempted at the 5/4 mark: I’d consider the Frankel/So You Think double a better bet at 11/10.
However, I’m going to do some serious study on the race tonight to see if I can be swerved away from anything other than a reverse f/c!
June 13, 2011 at 19:37 #360553As I said earlier in the thread, I have gone for Canford Cliffs; in fact, I’ve already struck the bet.
Going against Godikova for the first time in ages was hard, but I have based my decision on a number of things.
Canford Cliffs’ turn of foot, his record 2/2 at Ascot, he’s two years younger than Goldikova, and I think while he is still improving, I think Goldikova’s age and metres on the clock may be catching up with her. Her last win, albeit over an extended mile, was good, without being spectacular.
Only one other six year old has previously won this race – and yes, I am aware that Goldikova is no average six year old – but she will need to be on top of her game if she is to see off Canford Cliffs tomorrow. If she beats him, then I will readily bow in humble deference to the great lady, just like everyone else.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 14, 2011 at 13:32 #360640So, who thinks Canford Cliffs is overrated now?
June 14, 2011 at 13:33 #360641Big fan of Goldikova (who isn’t?) but Canford Cliffs will win comfortably.
says it all
never in doubt
June 14, 2011 at 13:34 #360642What a race. A great way to start the meeting, with two absolutely top class milers going toe to toe. Good run from Cityscape too. If that race is topped this week I’ll be amazed.
