Big factor might be the ground. Heavy rain forecast all day at Ascot on already good ground. Surely would have to favour Goldi?

Goldi loaths soft ground. She can’t pick up on it.

Very soft yes but she has won 7 times on good to soft/soft. Canford Cliffs never raced on anything worse than Good.

Yeah Good to Soft would help* Goldi’s chances a bit I would think? And Cityscape to threaten for the placings.

Goldikova might "go" on the ground, but she’s never been at her best on it. Her daisy-cutting action does not lend itself to a soft surface either. Since improving from 3 to 4 yrs of age, her 3 defeats were also all on a soft surface. Admittedly, she’s usually good enough to win anyway, but does not usually come accross something of Canford Cliff’s ability.

On the other hand, Canford Cliffs has never come up against soft ground and his turn of foot may not be what it is on a sound surface / may not act at all on it.

It is "probable" even on a soft surface one of the two will win. But at the odds available I would not like to take those prices with give underfoot.

    On the other hand,

    Cityscape

goes exceptionally well on a soft surface. Witness an impressive win in the Joel stakes. Putting up at least a Group 2 quality performance in a Group 3. Hasn’t had much racing and might be capable of improvement given ease in the ground.

At 25/1 with Ladbrokes Cityscape looks excellent value. I backed him each way yesterday when there were 3 places on offer and win only at 35/1. Albeit it’s nowhere near guaranteed to be on the soft side yet, was worth taking a chance.

Reading Chris Stickels tonight it sounds like it will just be on the soft side of good unless it really buckets down tonight.

Goldi has won plenty of times on that sort of surface and beat Paco Boy and Dick Turpin on very soft ground. Did Richard Hannon not once pull CC out of a race because of the ground? Or maybe I am imagining it.

Not a betting race for me anyway – one to savour – but conditions have me favouring the mare.

My 100% book for good, good-soft in places are:

    Canford Cliffs 11/8, Goldikova 7/4,

    Cityscape 9/1

, Cape Blanco 13/1, Rio De La Plata 33/1, Ramsome Note 100/1, Flash Dance 400/1

    Cityscape still 25/1 with Ladbrokes!

Like others have stated an exacta or CSF may be a good bet in this race being that Goldikova and Canford Cliffs should finish clear of the rest but i’d rather just worry about how easily Canford’s gonna win then about 2 horses. Besides i’ll save my forecast betting for the likes of the Hunt Cup and the Golden Jubilee when i’m less likely to have it up but more excited if i do. I can rightly see why people are jumping on the Goldikova band-wagon but surely she’s had her time in the limelight and its time for a new horse to progress. It’s not as it she’s not made a name for herself winning 3 straight Breeder’s Cup Miles and so on. But being a strong supporter of the home team come the Royal Meating and wanting Canford to finally prove in himself on a world class stage – I’ll be wanting the mare to lose. Besides wouldn’t it be better for racing over here with there being a higher possibility of a Queen Anne winner vs St James Palace winner at Goodwood or Champions Day at Ascot come thend of season. I think it will put a downer on things if Goldi wins again: people will feel happy for a while less if she wins then Canford being the new kid on the block and having the world at his hooves. And I feel slightly sympathetic for Paco Boy never proving himself as the best and Hannon hasn’t had many good horses down the years.

Cityscape should be running in a listed/grp3 race…why give money away needlessly?

    Come on the French FFS…..

Can not even dare compare Goldikova to Canford Cliffs. He has beaten Dick Turpin a nothing horse.

Goldikova is such a superior beast to Canford Cliffs. Even worse would seeing the smug Part Owners Roy getting his Mug on the front of the newspapers the next day.

Goldi is top class, but 6 years old and coming to the end of her unbelievable dominance. She couldn’t beat Makfi and only just edged out Paco Boy last year. Canford would laugh at Paco and will swing past Goldi fairly comfortably i’d think.

Their is no evidence to suggest she is on the decline….she won her prep in a Group 1 i would say maybe 75% fit over a a trip to far.

Come on Guys lets not get carried away with Hannon talk….Freddie Head is a much more trustworthy and professional operation.

just personally, it’s more than obvious just watching him on the track that he is about to become one of the best milers of the century so far

but it’s racing, maybe he’ll find traffic in the small field or something, 11/8 looks large tho

[attachment=0:l5udjipk]goldikova-bc-mile-iii.jpg[/attachment:l5udjipk]If Frankel was to meet Canford Cliffs…i say he stuff him. Canford has always been for me a incredibly overated horse. He won a terrible Irish Guineas and won a poor St James. I wouldn’t dream of calling last year’s milers anything more than average.

Goldikova has been their and got the t-shirt without any excuses.
Canford beat RVW when the race was set up for him and Rip didn’t look he had the same engine as he used to.

Goldi not favorite for this is a insult to the mare IMO. She should be odds on and CC around 6/4

    COME ON GOLDI!!!!!!!!!!!

well at least you’ll have the "nice odds" strapped to a losing voucher and a photo of what used to be

don’t worry about the formbook, just slant it so that goldi looks better

Many have rated Canford Clifs on his defeat of RVW, but AoB made it clear before the race that a second Sussex wasn’t part of the plan.
Too close between the big 2 to call with any confidence, imo.
