Right, I’m back now from what is the most unbelieveable day I’ve ever known. I watched the Abbaye with some friends of mine, and unfortunately, due to me screaming all the way through the entire race, we didn’t hear Jim McGrath say it was a false start – I was leaping around like a lunatic at the finish – I though Fleeting Spirit had planted and Marchand D’or had gone lame and that my little hero had won the Abbaye!!
I actually received a text from Andi Suborics after the race, and he said that Overdose won the race as he liked, and he’s lost nothing in the fact that he wouldn’t be in the re-run as he broke the course record. I’ve not seen the times, but I guess race 2 was slower. I think the best thing however is the fact that Marchand D’or will apparently run wherever Overdose runs next, to find who is the real champion, and I hear that this race will take place in Hong Kong in (I think) December. Ringside seats for that one please!!!!
In the last few years, I’ve scoured Eastern Europe in search of what I’ve hoped would be champions. And what are my two favourite horses that I’ve always followed? Registana and Overdose!!! I must be cursed!!!

October 6, 2008 at 01:41 #183652Commiserations Darren, but fans and connections can take comfort in the fact that the horse has gained more kudos today than any other N/R in history.
October 6, 2008 at 01:44 #183653Darren – You may have also enjoyed the Radio 5live coverage, in which the commentator mistakenly thought Borderlescott was pulled up injured, and described Overdose as "a bullet of a horse".
October 6, 2008 at 01:51 #183654Regarding the course records, at the time the 1st Abbeye went off there was a ridiculously strong following wind down the sprint straight. This probably helped Overdose set a track record.
However, I wouldnt underestimate Overdose anymore. I think that run showed what he’s worth and I’ll be lumping on on him next time round.
On a very dodgy trendline over the two runnings – Marchand D’Or has just under two lengths to find with Overdose (Trendline of Strike Up the Band)
October 6, 2008 at 02:14 #183670well. I hope they meet again and I hope that Overdose wins..it was a dismal start to what has been a wonderful days racing .
October 6, 2008 at 03:04 #183684Overdose won the Abbye, he did it imprress doing it The authorties should at least give the connections something, even if say a percentage of the purse and acnoldgement that the horse defeated a field at post time. They could just split the prizemoney between those that finnishd in both of the races. Frankly If i was kevin ryan and david nichols i would be fuming as their horses were placed but come with nothing, what a ripoff.
What they could have done is asked everyone too come back in a say a fortnight ( offer too cover expenses) and rerun it properly.

Aw come on Moehat it was good but not as good as in March, nothing in the world is as good as that.
Have followed the lines about Overdose since joining the forum and came to conclusion that either he was beating nothing or he was exceptional. Allowing for horses pulling up behind, this was exceptional. A brilliant horse robbed by something that was nobody’s fault, one of those things. Let’s he comes for the July Cup, Kings Stand or the Nunthorpe and then see this fella fly. I’ve become a real – and of a flat racer – I can’t believe that. Any chance of five furlong hurdle races?
October 6, 2008 at 04:30 #183697Does anyone know how I can view the most spectacular of non events?!
Christ!, was Overdose THAT good?
Was it on a par with Esher Ness?
October 6, 2008 at 06:27 #183699Interesting video put up on youtube!
October 6, 2008 at 13:17 #183710Does anybody have an accurate time for Overdose please?
My best stab at the timings are –
Overdose 54.49
Marchand d’Or 54.38 (Official 54.40)Habibti’s course record 54.3
October 6, 2008 at 13:57 #183719We’ll probably never resolve the Overdose issue, which is sad, but hats off to Marchand D’Or, undoubtably a sprinter out of the very top drawer. To be able to win three Maurice de Gheests, a July Cup and now a fast-ground Abbaye is a fine achievement.
A little qestion about Overdose though, I’d hazard a guess that we’ll never see him on a racecourse again, can anyone shed any further light on that?
October 6, 2008 at 14:43 #183728Looked a certifiable nut job prior to the race… Typical sprinter.. Why wouldn’t they race him again? He’s hardly a blue blood so they’d be better off trying to win some G1’s with him..

They probably risk losing a lot if they run him against Marchand D’Or, which would be far from a foregone conclusion either way IMO. There is possibly a case to say he gained almost as much through yesterday’s events as he would have had he actually won.
October 6, 2008 at 15:29 #183742There are too many unanswered questions to have a clue whether Overdose would have won. Could he have gone faster with some competition? Would Marchand d’Or, Borderlescott, National Colour etc have run faster without the aborted race? Borderlescott was 10lb plus below his Nunthorpe form.
Overdose is only a 3YO which is a baby in sprinting terms. He may also be better at 6f+. So every reason for going on and trying to prove himself a champion imo.
The sweating beforehand just meant he was up for it. It would be a crying shame not to have him around for at least another season.

Hong Kong December 14th!!! I can tell you that Sandor Ribarszki and Zoltan Mihascy want justice (that’s the printable translated version!!), so that they can prove Overdose is the real star. There’s even a story doing the rounds that he’ll go for the Breeders Cup Sprint, but from what I hear, it’s Hong Kong on December 14th, then a Group 3 sprint in Dubai in March as a prep race for the Golden Shaheen.

All I know is that Overdose broke the course record (that’s official), but the time that was mentioned (this isn’t official) was 54.14.

That time (54.14) seems highly unlikely.
Since I post the last message I have come across a link to this split screen video on Youtube showing both races together. If this is to be believed Overdose and Marchand d’Or would have finished side by side. What do you think?
