I think he’s done it pretty comfortably in the end.
Superb ride from Olivier Peslier.

tells me Twice Over will run a good race here and be leading going into or before the final furlong. Vision D´Etat to head him but Twice Over to fight back only to be headed by Tartan Bearer in the last 150yds.
1. Tartan Bearer 2. Twice Over 3. Vision D´Etat
WRONG!

He’s a Cadillac, that Vision D’Etat. Typical laidback Frenchman.
June 17, 2009 at 19:04 #234686Great finish. Never On Sunday was closing fast, put in a very good performance. Bodes well for Elusive Wave on Friday..
June 17, 2009 at 19:24 #234690Oliver Peslier probably made the winning move early in the race, he got a slight bang of the German horse and dropped back, Ryan Moore then made a move of moving Tartan Bearer up to the pace more instead of the back which where he was at time, and I think Oliver Peslier realised he had Tartan Bearer and could get a run on a horse that will idle once he is up there.
He was held up beautifully, and that was just one jockey winning the battle with another. Thought Tartan Bearer was going to fold completely but then he started staying on once again you would think he’d stay 1m4f or maybe the fact the race was pretty slow. Feel sorry for the horse he has a 100% place record yet just cant get his head in front for a G1, think he is stuck where he can go cause of Conduit.
Vision D’Etat will probably go to The Arc trials next, whether or not he is an Arc winner hard ro say, maybe 1m2f is his best distance and they might go for more English G1’s. They have options with him.

Well done mate… brilliant ride! My fears about Tartan Bearer were realised just doesnt have the engine does he?
Fortunately I had a saver on your fellow which is all I needed.
I don’t want to count my chickens but there’s a good chance Sir Michael will send Conduit for the Eclipse now :0)
June 17, 2009 at 19:40 #234696Tartan Bearer has the engine; unfortunately for those of us who backed him, he just doesn’t have the gears.

Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 17, 2009 at 19:47 #234699Never really liked him, think he’s just very slow. I mean he’s never beaten anything of value. Frozen Fire, Twice Over, all the rubbish in the Derby, all the rubbish in the Irish Derby & Pipedreamer who couldn’t win a Group 3 getting 7lb the other week. Very overrated horse IMO.
June 17, 2009 at 20:03 #234704Hardly been beaten here though, and Twice Over is actually involved in the finish here, so you could make a case the race being slow could have cost him when a fast pace in The Dante got Twice Over well beat, although I think it was just brilliant riding from Peslier that won the day here.
He is pretty slow when he hits the front, but when you see Kieren Fallon riding Golan you know these type of horses need to be ridden to perfection, like how he just waited in the KG & QE letting Nayef get a lead then get his mount to charge full guns blazing to pip them at the line. Was one of the best Fallon rides I have seen.
And he never has been beaten by a great deal, he failed to pull away from a Leicester maiden as well and got beat by a handicapper in Foolin’ Myself.
He is a horse I can’t pile into at short price though, if he comes up value though he will always be worth a punt.
Whether or not he can get top G1 horses beat though its going `to be tough cause there a very good bunch.
June 17, 2009 at 20:05 #234705I like him thoroughly because of his will to win (or at least try to).
Himself is right about the "gears" aspect, but in the Dante, Vodafone Derby, Gordon Richards and today, he has this eagerness to make up ground. Extremely honest horse.
June 17, 2009 at 20:10 #234709Anyone think Tartan Bearer might be better for front running tactics?

That would make him there to be shot at and would never quicken, he is best ridden last and likes to have cover, like he was in The Dante and The Derby, and looked the plan today till what happened with the German horse and Vision D’Etat, so Moore changed tactics and pushed him more to the front and may have thought Never On Sunday was the main danger after that. Peslier deliberatly stayed last after the knock cause he knew what race Tartan Bearer would run and could get a charge on him. Was quite a masterstroke jockeying off Mendizabal for Peslier cause in a tactical race at Ascot maybe the more inexperienced jock would have gotten him beat, this is what I thought the owners were thinking.
Was quite a race to watch cause it was all about the jockeys and it was pretty tactical, I’d be surprised if Tartan Bearer can win a G1 race at this distance now, I think they will actually send him to The King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes then probably The Breeder’s Cup Turf.
Vision D’Etat could have been a more impressive winner if he had the tounge tie in, but if I were the owners I’d forget about The Arc and aim for 1m2f races, he has had a busy campaign so far so maybe an Eclipse may not be out the question. I could see him winning more G1’s at this distance and hopefully we could see him square of against Ghanaati in The Champion Stakes.
