For the three of interested in these things.
Have found that Google stores a lot of free newspaper archives. Mostly American but some local British ones as well. Have been looking through some Scottish papers’ coverage of Nationals of yore, and this is for useful for seeing the National runners that weren’t.
I’ll post more if I get chance, but will leave you with findings for 1978. Seems that some that were at least left in with a few days to go, but not in the final field were:
Bar Rock
Cantabet
Timmie’s Battle (a Foxhunter-type?)With Red Rum and Forest King declared to run but ultimately withdrawn.
Will keep looking for other stuff.
April 1, 2012 at 10:38 #399010Kifill, 1995 had 3, Master Oats, Cool Ground, and Garrison Savannah.
Interestingly enough so did 1994. Garrison Savannah, The Fellow and Master Oats. Only thing is… Master Oats wouldn’t win the Gold Cup for another 11 months!
Such a strange occurrence. Is there any other occasion when a horse went from running in the Grand National to winning the Gold Cup? One would hardly call the National a Gold Cup prep

Dad, try to find that rant you made regarding Over The Deel’s suspicious withdrawal from the ’98 race!
April 2, 2012 at 12:00 #399123According to the Glasgow Herald of 31 March 1976, there were 37 4-day decs for the National later that week. 32 started, so we can deduce that those coming out were…

April 2, 2012 at 15:40 #399135Ah yes, 1995, the year four of the first five in the Gold Cup lined up. And the quality of the field is supposed to have gone up since then???
Take a look at the entries and weights for the 73 National. Such was the quality that Specify only got given 10-6 to carry. Crisp and L’Escargot 12-0, Spnish Steps and Dim Wit 11-13, French Tan 11-10 etc. Even Grey Sombrero only got 10-9. Barona, remember him, 8-8!

Great work Nafsasp where on earth did you pull those entry list from ,what a joy to read through them
April 2, 2012 at 19:46 #399160Just a bit of Trivia but Wayward Demon in the 73 entries was sold at the sales just before the national only for it having to be withdrawn due to not being qualified ! You think the powers that be would have picked up on that at the weights stage.
April 2, 2012 at 22:12 #399186Have hazy memories of a few that OA highlighted.
Timmie`s Battle was a good hunter chaser trained by W A Stephenson.
Think he was placed in the Aintree Foxhunters and it may have been the year Nicky Henderson was aboard the winner (Happy Warrior?)Cantabet was from the same stable, owned by a professional punter called Joe Lisle. Was one for the minor northern tracks I think.
I associate Notification with Martin Tate and think he won his share.
I`m sure I can remember Toby Balding giving a very full answer to BBC TV about why Vulgan Town had to miss the race but assured us he`d be back next year. Not so sure he was though.
Well done everyone on the source material.
Will have to scan Nafsasps lists when I`ve a few minutes
April 2, 2012 at 22:22 #399187Years ago I was looking for the weights pre 1990, and decided easiest way was just to trawl through Times microfiches at local library, they always published weights. Have most of them back to 1950. missing 1959 and 1961.

April 16, 2012 at 13:35 #401022Forgot to say thanks to Nafsasp and I look forward to any more you can come up with. The ones upthread made some interesting reading. Uncle Bing rated higher than the previous season’s Gold Cup winner? I know he was slated to run in the postponed 78 Gold Cup and subsequently won a Topham, but what did he do to rate so highly? Same for Shifting Gold.
A week or so back I found in the online archive a newspapers sweepstake kit for the 83 race, which included a few that did not ultimately line up. I may have forgotten a couple here as it goes, but the once springing to mind are…
Ashley House – we all know him
My Buck/Duck – poor print quality, wasn’t sure which it was. Neither name is familiar.
Secret Progress – ran in a Gold Cup, otherwise, don’t remember anything.
Ramyraja – am taking a guess at the spelling there, it was something like that. Again, no recollections.April 17, 2012 at 12:20 #401193Forgot to say thanks to Nafsasp and I look forward to any more you can come up with. The ones upthread made some interesting reading. Funny how the Dickinson factor had the handicappers flapping ,My buck was one of the higher rated horses in the `83 national but had dropped at least a couple of stones the year later when entered by his new connections.
Secret Progress and Ramrajya were both trained by Micheal Hourigan i think.I remember Bob Davies being a little critical of MD for withdrawing Ashley House due to the softening ground . He was being interviewed by someone on the Beeb and i can remember that he couldn`t understand him not running as he was on form "after all there is only one national" was a comment i remember.
April 18, 2012 at 03:42 #401268Since we’re reminiscing about late 70s/early 80s Nationals :
Some kind soul uploaded some footage of Ben Nevis II’s wins in the 1977 and 1978 Maryland Hunt Cups. No sound, but given how difficult it is to find video of American jumps races pre-1990s this is pure gold. He won the 1980 Grand National as 12yo with a handicap of 12-10-3 and 12 consecutive losses in England leading up to the race. "Big Ben" was however an undefeated timber horse – with 12 consecutive
wins
