The following categories and nominations came about as a result of the Southern meeting on 24/10. The purpose of the exercise was to provide a starting point for categories and nominations in advance of running some end-of-year polls, probably in about a month’s time. What has been missed out? And what has been included that shouldn’t have been?

October 25, 2007 at 10:27 #121331Matt Chapman ??? Broadcaster of the Year ???
October 25, 2007 at 10:51 #121334What is going on with the Owner of the year category?
Godolphin? On what possible basis could they be in the running?
(and the Comic Strip Heroes nomination is surely too much of a suck up to the Betfair boys as well – have you no shame Prufrock
?)October 25, 2007 at 10:56 #121335Agree with Godolphin not being in there.
They have been awful i think up until the last month or so.
October 25, 2007 at 11:01 #121336John Mayne should definitely be on the list btw.
October 25, 2007 at 11:27 #121337Why?
hes been brown bread for years and i never liked his films anyway
October 25, 2007 at 12:15 #121344I would add MickyMo and Davejay to poster of the year
October 25, 2007 at 13:25 #121348ooh this is fun. Here’s some of mine:
Poster: I don’t like to mention names and the 4 or 5 that I would name already know who they are, as they’ve either made me laugh hysterically, or been most courteous and generous one way or another, or for simply giving me the time of day

Hero: Henry Cecil, as always good grace, strength and fortitude.
Villain: Richard Hughes – I’m sorry Richard but my pocket says you’ve done me no favours this year sweetheart.
Horse: Katchit – for one kept on the go so long and still retained it’s form in one of the seasons most gruelling events for young horses.
Jockey: Seb Sanders for being such a grafter
Hayley Turner for the ability to make it in a man’s world.Trainer: William Knight [please don’t ask why]
Owner: Hucking Horses, for giving me a hucking good laugh.
Journalist: Lydia Hislop
Commentator: Simon Holt/Darren Owen
Broadcaster: Matt Chapman, Lydia Hislop, and the always pleasant Alex Quinn.
Racecourse: Brighton – for allowing me in.
Ride of the Year: How dare you ask! – I’m not telling……….oh but if I must – Ryan Moore/Notnowcato
One to Watch for 2008: David Englandso there

October 25, 2007 at 13:30 #121349Ride of the Year: How dare you ask! – I’m not telling……….
Well u wouldnt if it was Alan Berry or Mick Easterby ….would u?
October 25, 2007 at 15:19 #121370POSTER OF THE YEAR — Others to consider in my opinion are Madman Marz, Non Vintage and Maxillion.
RACECOURSE OF THE YEAR — what about Ascot
October 25, 2007 at 17:17 #121375I would add MickyMo and Davejay to poster of the year
Thanks Andrew.
If there were a drunken poster of the year award, I would not only be in it, I think I would pish it, hic, hic.
Mike,
Categories are great BTW, when does voting commence? And can we have a ‘most blatant non trier’ of the year award just to keep Madman happy
October 25, 2007 at 17:40 #121376Lord Donoughue – definitely villian of the year, the way things are going it could be of the decade, well him and Saville.
Armpit of the year, Kempton.
Poster of the year, Prufrock
October 25, 2007 at 18:07 #121378Matt Chapman broadcaster of the year nominee?????
He was added for a laugh surely? That cannot be serious!!
October 25, 2007 at 19:57 #121384POSTER OF THE YEAR
Glenn – His "The Beverley Heist" post could have graced the pages of any broadsheet.
NB – Dave Jay, he should be running the sport.
APracing off the list this year, obviously a man who knows his racing but his infrequent posts these days certainly don’t merit any adulation. Pity he doesn’t contribute more.
HERO OF THE YEAR
Ryan Moore – The personification of excellence, I’d love to know what he REALLY thinks.
VILLIAN OF THE YEAR
Irish Stewards – "Whatever you say, say nothing"
HORSE OF THE YEAR
Kauto Star – cant add anything to what’s already been said
Ramonti – Beat the mob handed Ballydolye boys in the Sussex with an awesome dispaly of guts, his obscure pedigree prevent the plaudits, but he has a big fan here.TRAINER OF THE YEAR
Sir Michael Stoute – Sustained excellence at the highest levels of the sport without the massive Arab/Irish firepower.
OWNER OF THE YEAR
Khalid Abdullah – None of the Godolphin hype, but a superb breeding and racing operation in its own right.
COMMENTATOR OF THE YEAR
They all do a good job, Richard Hoiles, Simon Holt and Mark Johnson all deserve special mention
BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR
Bit of a blanket category, interviewing, analysing, and presenting are all different skills
Interrviewing – Nick Luck, asks the questions I’d ask myself
Analysing – Steve Mellish, his instant recall is almost frightening
Presenting – Matt Chapman, under all the front seems an informed and intelligent guy.JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR
Lydia Hislop – Can have her off days (article today) but in full topical flow no one better. And she cares!
RACECOURSE OF THE YEAR
Goodwood – The most beautiful racecourse I’ve been to.
RIDE OF THE YEAR
Ryan Moore – Notnowcato in the Eclipse
ONE TO WATCH FOR 2008
Liam Jones, he’s better than Buick.

ONE TO WATCH FOR 2008
William BuickOctober 25, 2007 at 20:14 #121389Tim Vaughan & Tom Dascombe are two up & coming trainers who should be followed.
Rowe Park deserves a mention in the horse of the year polls.
From a stable more associated with the likes of Smart Guy round Fontwell this horses’ rate of progress has been absolutely extraordinary.
Never thought that when he won his maiden (we ran Taj in that race) that 12 months later the horse would be considered for the Prix De L’Abbaye and judged by the result may not have been far away (next year perhaps??).From a similar stable John Long has to be applauded for the handling of his small string, especially multiple winners Cativo Cavallino (who also ran against Taj in another maiden at Lingers won by Al Qasi) and the much improved For Life.
