Well done Reet and fist, that was an impressive performance under 11-10,i ended up backing Tidal Bay and yet again his jumping was shocking! Howard needs to do a Ballyfitz with him!
Dont worry about my Crown though, its fine where it is!December 10, 2009 at 14:32 #263175No trumpets blowing or mutual pleasuring here then
December 10, 2009 at 15:14 #263200A very eventful race, Tidal Bay’s jumping was just awful, did well to stay on 2 feet when he slithered on landing when Something Wells went, but could never get into it after that.
Got to give credit to Deep Purple, and what a price 12/1, well done to those who were on.
I do think there will be a race for Herecomesthetruth, think he has a lot of ability, and the way he jumps his fences is great. Christian Williams looked a bit uncomfortable before the flight where he fell off somewhat easily, so maybe didnt have his balance ready for the jump.
December 10, 2009 at 15:56 #263210Like Evan Williams, I couldn’t see Deep Purple winning, but the horse had obviously improved from Wetherby.
Connections could be tempted to run him at Kempton. He wouldn’t land a blow unless Kauto Star has lost a leg, but he could challenge for minor honours.
Longterm, I can’t see him being a Ryanair horse. Cheltenham wouldn’t play to his strengths, but Aintree would be right up his street. After displaying such a high level of versatility in his two outings this term, either the Melling Chase or Totesport Bowl would be suitable targets.
Tartak made a pleasing appearance. He could be one to keep on your side after the New Year. Albertas Run was always going to struggle around this sharp track and failed to reproduce his Ascot form. He will do well to win another race this season.
Tidal Bay put in, arguably, his most inconsistent round of jumping thus far. He did incredibly well to stay on his feet after a mistake on the first circuit and, belying the general opinion about him, displayed a willing attitude to get himself back into the race.
I said after his defeat at Doncaster as a novice chaser that it would take an almighty blunder to deck him, and that still remains the case. He’s such a natural athlete that he’ll always find a leg.
This horse will continue on a steady decline unless something is done to increase his confidence. I’m a huge supporter of Howard Johnson and his horses are amongst the fittest in the country, but I continue to notice that they are hardly the most consistent of jumpers.
The horse could benefit from a change of stables, although this is highly unlikely to happen.
Racing Demon had a nice public schooling session (
) and will improve. We’ll know if he retains enough ability to be competitve throughout the season, but he has it all to prove after that.December 10, 2009 at 19:33 #263258I think he is messin about with Tidal Bay because the horse doesnt seem to have a trip…………not quick enough in its class over two miles and not the heartiest of stayers over further…..shame, cause he looked a horse to be reckoned with in its novice days. Definately one to avoid betting wise.
December 10, 2009 at 19:50 #263263I feel sorry for anyone who backed Racing Demon as he got a typical ride from Graham Lee – have the horse at the back of the field and keep it there, terrible.

He’s a Ryanair horse in my opinion.
December 10, 2009 at 20:08 #263269Possibly, but hes disappointed too many times for me. Wouldnt be surprised if they had a crack at the National when his handicap has come down a bit.

Imo Tidal Bay could win over just about any trip – if only someone could teach him to jump.
Until such times, I’ve seen little to threaten today’s 3rd for the Ryanair – ground allowing, of courseDecember 10, 2009 at 21:25 #263282Imo Tidal Bay could win over just about any trip – if only someone could teach him to jump.

December 10, 2009 at 22:37 #263290Far from sure this race will work out at all well. The race fell apart for Deep Purple. Tartak again jumped poorly, so did Tidal Bay who has massive problems physically and/or mentally), Racing Demon was never travelling, Something Wells came down before the race had begun.
Reet – Don’t get what you like about Alberta’s Ascot run, he was getting weight off Planet of Sound who only won off 152 in the Haldon Gold Cup.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all, if those from the race don’t win another graded race over fences between them this season.
December 10, 2009 at 22:53 #263291IMO Tidal Bay’s best trip is 2m and the owner’s and trainer’s complete fear of Masterminded has sadly, totally ruined the horse who has just about been tried at every distance bar Cross Country/National distances.
He should have been kept to 2m even after the Tingle Creek last year as Sandown fences were always going to be tricky and he was there about with Twist Magic before TM fell and with Twist Magics victory last year, showed to me Tidal Bay’s 2nd to Masterminded wasnt that bad a run at all considering his bad jumping that day.
He needs to retuen to 2m pronto, sad to see him look as bad as he is and hasnt won since he stuffed Alberta’s Run.
A 10l defeat to Masterminded was a whole lot better than a 11l defeat to Deep Purple.

Tbh DJ, I’m not a pounds and lengths punter, but I was gobsmacked how Albertas Run (Whom I’ve always had down as a stayer) beat specialist 2.5m horses quite easily at Ascot (Including Planet Of Sound, who ran off an OR of 160, and has subsequently been raised to 166), which, whichever way you look at it, is a remarkable achievement for a Sun Alliance winner. Forget your usual way of looking at things for a moment, and tell me how many horses you’ve known who could do both of them?
If you’ll concede he stays the SA distance well, then what business has he mixing it around a sharp track like Huntingdon? He ran another blinder today imo, though he wasn’t made enough use of – possibly with one eye on the King George – and hit more fences than he jumped, but still ran well enough to convince me there aren’t many better.
Cheltenham, in my view, will be a totally different kettle of fish.December 11, 2009 at 09:53 #263325IMO Tidal Bay’s best trip is 2m and the owner’s and trainer’s complete fear of Masterminded has sadly, totally ruined the horse who has just about been tried at every distance bar Cross Country/National distances.

Very good points.
