If it is God’s own course – why did he make it hell to get to?

I suppose to stop non-believers like me from getting there

Looking forward to seeing Katchit going over the hurdles at Aintree again too this weekend.

Glad it is on tv too.

    Can’t wait for it Sunday.

    Should be a corker.

Seeing MWDS poor first time out record – I would say its not a bad thing he misses the race. If he was beaten by Kauto and receiving loads of weight – it would raise questions whether he will have jumped the last of King George before Kauto had finished. I would be pleased to se him get a confidence bossting easier run.

Kauto Star had a remarkable season and I hope he proves what a good horse he is by having a good season this year – but I would like to see one of the others beat him in this race. If he wins, having received a lot of weight – surely, even if the others improve for fitness, you have to assume he will as well – and it lessens the excitement for the season (only slightly mind).

If he was turned over, it would not detriment from his position of the number one chaser in the country – but would make it a very few exciting months as Exotic Dancer, Trabolgan, War of Attrition, Kicking King, Denman, Star de Mohaison, MWDS and co made their way towards the festival – the trials would be immense.

Ashley Brook was a big favourite of mine and I would have loved to have seen him aimed at the King George in his prime. Unfortunately, the trainer never took the chance to find out if he would stay. It is hard to get away from the way Well Chief picked him up so easily at Newbury and although he may be more effective at this trip I have a suspicion he is on a downward slope.

Even though he was running one of his best races ever when falling at the last in the Champion Chase?

I think he’s still in his prime, he’s only nine, and he may end up in the King George in a couple of months. I wouldn’t give up so easily as you appear to be doing.

Ashleybrook might just be the bet for me. Has a great record fresh, took really well to the course when winning the Maghull, has always shaped like further than 2m will be his optimum and looks likely to get an uncontested lead.

Interestingly, last time he ran in a handicap he was half the price of Kauto Star and had to give that rival 9 lb. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then mind. Though a 25 lb turnaround in the weights makes Ashleybrook look very interesting.

Looking at the Aintree website, the race seems to be in racecard order with Monets Garden No.3 and Ashleybrook No.4. Given that Monkerhostin is No.5 with 10-5, I think both MG & AB will both carry at least that weight, if not more. I’d say probably 10-8 & 10-7 respectively.

    http://www.aintree.co.uk/racing/cardbyd … 28/10/2007

Indeed. I had read (IIRC a quote from Paul Nicholls) that MWDS and MG would be on the minimum. Then when the 5-day decs were published MG didn’t have an OR figure beside his name, so I did wonder at that point if he would be on 10-4. Still stuck with PN’s line though, just as well I didn’t bet before now!

He is still on all the racecards still.

That’s because horses which are entered at the five-day stage remain on the racecard until the overnight (or 48-hour) declaration stage.

The weights at the five day stage are:

    KS 11-10
    ED 11-3
    MG 10-10
    AB 10-8
    M 10-5
    MWDS 10-4

With all the remainder out of the handicap (10-4 min)

So should KS not be declared on Friday there will be a 7lb rise, bringing two more into the handicap proper (Too Forward and High Cloy). Should KS be taken out on Sunday the weights will not rise and ED will be top weight off 11-3.

Breaking news on RP is that Kauto Star faces just 4 rivals on Sunday but can’t get the 4 anywhere yet!

edited to add the small but exclusive card from http://www.aintree.co.uk

    1 Kauto Star 11-10
    2 Exotic Dancer 11-3
    3 Monets Garden 10-10
    4 Ashleybrook 10-8
    5 Le Volfoni 10-4

Note that Le Volfoni is running off a mark of 159 when his OR is 147.

To be honest, it’s a small field, but all the big players are still there bar My Way. Could be worse, Katchit only has 3 to beat!

Stop Press: Le Volfoni is also entered at Chepstow tomorrow, in the Silver Trophy HcH. We could be looking at a 4 runner race after all!

Personally I’d be disappointed if even a half-fit Kauto Star couldn’t give weight and a beating to the other contenders.
Remembering what he did in this race last year, once again on his seasonal debut, it is difficult to imagine even this better bunch causing him much of a problem.
The track and the trip may well suit Monet’s Garden, but I would guess it’s pretty close to KS’s optimum also, and I can’t see 14lbs being enough to bridge the gap.

Anyone else got the right hand side of the posts chopped off on Page 1???

A very interesting race, KS and ED closely matched at weights, i don’t think Monets Garden can beat those two even under these terms

Ashley Brook on 10-8 brings him into the equation , goes well fresh,

anyone for Ashley Brook to upset the big two??

It’s fixed now EW – my link to ATR was distorting it.

I really fancy Monets Garden but Ashleybrook is big at the price – about 13/2 on BF
