Been a difficult 48 hours for all, and seems trivial discussing such things, but doing my weekly update anyway.
I’d imagine those Elliot ones will be missing, and rightly so. For the record, most of his, like the majority of these, are smaller bets, but I was strangely confident about The Storyteller, and that was a bigger bet, which of course doesn’t have a hint of NRNB around it. It’ll also floor my only serious Antepost perm, but considering that bloody photo, it really doesn’t matter.
March 1, 2021 at 22:32 #1526271Hi VtC. Yeah its been a rotten couple of days. Just rubbish for all concerned. But thanks for doing your updates, I deliberately came over to this thread tonight just to get away from it all and think about simple pleasures like talking about your favourite horses running in races

Disappointed for both of us with Dalton and Lynwood today- they looked to be ridden to get the trip and use their flat speed but whether they didn’t pick up quick enough on the ground or were just positioned too far back off what looked like not an overly fast pace, I don’t know. Oh well. Lynwood has an entry in the Martin Pipe so will just see if he gets in.
You never know with The Storyteller; if the owners did jump ship perhaps he could go to Stuart Crawford and run at Cheltenham. I know he’s not a big time trainer but I think if he didn’t have to sell everything really good that comes through his hands he could train away at smart older horses OK.
March 1, 2021 at 23:13 #1526274Cheers Grass. Yeah, nothing else to do but crack on.
I took my money back in running from the pair of them today, but I felt flat after that, I really thought one of them would take it. I topped up on the forecast too.
Unlucky yourself with Lynwood. I see the appeal with him though, and hope you get to see him in The Martin Pipe. If I’m being honest, I think both Dalton and Lynwood were given too much to do. I think both jockeys would like that race back.
Not got as many big Anteposts this year. Main reason is that you can get blinded by them, and you’re committed financially on the day, even if you fancy another one at post time. I also want the actual enjoyment of studying the day before.
Although I’ve looked at The Plate, and started the thread, I’m sticking to my guns and not doing an Antepost. I’m also avoiding The Boodles, The Grand Annual, and The Hunter until Final Decs.
I hope you’re right with The Storyteller, that would be great, he deserves a crack at The Stayers, but I think a lot of water to go under the bridge first.
As I said, not many big Antepost bets this year, only had seven, one gone the way of NRNB, and Frodon/The Storyteller the sore ones.
Hopefully we can both get a few there with a live chance.
March 2, 2021 at 16:08 #1526619Well there was something gladden a weary heart anyway- your boy Bachasson positively skipping over the fences today with the sunlight in his tail. (No bets as it wasn’t that kind of a race, and I expect you didn’t either, just tuned in to see them run). “Jumping for fun”, I think they call that
March 2, 2021 at 16:24 #1526626Yeah Grass, that was superb. What a boy, he’s a cracker, and that was a joy to watch.
Yup, not a penny involved, but put a smile on my face.
March 2, 2021 at 20:12 #1526701He’s been some horse for his owners, a kind of Un De Sceaux ‘lite’!
March 3, 2021 at 00:58 #1526841Absolutely THM, he’s been an unbelievable horse for them. He’s 10 now, and good as he’s ever been.
March 5, 2021 at 14:34 #1527211Very decent racing tomorrow, and got a few on the radar….
Doncaster
Already given my thoughts on Chidswell in The Grimthorpe in Big Races. Happy with the price taken, and although Canelo looks a proper tough nut, I’m hopeful.Kelso
Great to see the course getting a turn out like this, and it’s a smashing card.Already spoke about The Bet365 Hurdle, and Morebattle in Big Races, but worth noting that my plan to nab Faivoir at around 7’s, 8’s, didn’t really materialise, and I almost left him at the 11-2. I thought better of it though, and covered him.
I was hoping for a nice price for Fourth of July in the 1255. I thought I’d unearthed a nice dark one. Seems I wasn’t the only one though, and he’s opening at 3’s. Big fancy, but with other bets, have to leave him out.
Navan
It was the opposite with Neverushacon with Fourth of July. I assumed Neverushacon would be Fav, but he’s opened at 11’s. Oooft. I’ll take that, and top up if he goes bigger. The 1705 sees me looking at Fiveaftermidnight again. I maintain she’s got more wins in her, and will all depend on odds.
In the 1448, I’ve got an eye on Aa Bee See, but I’ll have to play him by ear.
Newbury
In The Veterans, Present Man jumps out at the 4’s, but on a busy day, short enough I suppose for me. Undecided. The one I’m not undecided on is the outsider of the field, and a proper old friend of mine, Sizing Codelco. It’s four years since he blew me away. He’s been beset by issues since, but I just think it’s noteworthy that they’re persevering with him, and in The Portman Cup last time, he shaped a lot better than he had for a while. He’s now down to a tempting mark, and Harry Kimber takes seven off. I have to bet him. He’s got potential to drift, and I’d have no hesitation in topping up.In The Greatwood, Umbrigado is back out, and hopeful of a decent future for him. Surprised he’s here, assuming The Plate at Cheltenham isn’t the plan, and I’ll be with him. He’s drifting slightly, and hoping for generous odds.
The three Antepost picks, I’ll consider laying before the off, as prices going the right way.
Veterans – Sizing Codelco 25’s EW 4pls
Greatwood – Umbrigado
Bet365 Hurdle – Weather Front 25’s
Morebattle – Faivoir 11-2
Morebattle – Solo 20’s
Grimthorpe – Chidswell 12’s
1633 Neverushacon – EW 5 PlacesMarch 6, 2021 at 19:05 #1527675Really happy with that today, and topped off nicely by Fiveaftermidnight at 33’s. She really dug that out well, and fantastic from the jockey, having almost being unshipped two out.
Especially sweet as it put The Midnight Club over the £700 mark. I had a good bet on her too, and I screamed her home.
Delighted with Umbrigado at 15-2, while I topped up as planned on Sizing Codelco at 40’s, and he was a decent EW for me.
Money back in running from both Solo and Faivoir in The Morebattle as well, and in the case of Solo, that was vital, as he was a decent sized bet.
The other three were average, but I can’t imagine that that was the true running from Weather Front, while Neverushacon looked as if that’ll blow the cobwebs away.
Definitely having a few bets tomorrow after that.
March 6, 2021 at 19:17 #1527681Bet you got a big fright after his 2nd last jump Bob haha
March 6, 2021 at 20:58 #1527689What a great set of selections. I too backed Umbrigado and I made a note of your thoughts about Fiveaftermidnight, intending to bet later. But I forgot. I did not see the race. What do you think Umbrigado will do next? You said that he was aimed at Cheltenham. Isn’t it too close now?
March 6, 2021 at 22:36 #1527706Thanks Sungold, really enjoyed that today.
Sorry you missed Fiveaftermidnight mate. Proper mistake two out, and don’t know how it wasn’t an unseat, but really fought well at the end.
As for Umbrigado. Not sure where he goes now, but I’m sure they’ve got something in mind. Long term, he must be a contender for The BetVictor Gold Cup, but his season surely isn’t over. Smashing horse with a good attitude. I haven’t heard anything positive or negative about Cheltenham, but as you say, very short recovery time.
I really did like him for The Plate, but he also holds an entry for Grand Annual.
March 6, 2021 at 22:40 #1527707Ista, you better bloody believe it. A few crossbars lately, and I thought it was going to be another hard luck story.
March 7, 2021 at 01:49 #1527724Obviously a bit quieter today, but still some decent looking races.
At Sedgefield, not for the first time, I’ll be with Rock On Fruity. He took this last year, and will have to win it off 5lbs higher. It’s not beyond him. He’s been in great form this year over hurdles, winning twice, and at his current 9’s, he just looks overpriced. I’ve taken 9’s, but I’m hopeful he’ll go out again, and I’d have no problem topping up.
One who really caught they eye in a very competitive Warwick Castle, was Flowery. Travelled very well for a long way. This is easier, and like Rock On Fruity, he won this last year, and will attempt to win off 5lbs higher. I like him here, but not enough to bet at 3’s on his own. One for the perms.
At Huntingdon, in the last, Quid Pro Quo is a horse I’ve been looking forward to seeing again, but he’s certainly too short. I’m hoping to see some progression from him.
Very nice card at Leopardstown, and in the 1545, I’ll go with Annie Pender. Rarely runs a bad race, and she’s looking like a decent price for the six places. She’s Comanche and Demi Plie look very interesting too.
The 1650 is a cracker. In The Punchestown Grand National Trial, Midnight Maestro shaped really well before a bad mistake put paid to his chances. Jockey quickly pulled up. I thought that was a sensible move at the time, and hopefully it’ll pay dividends tomorrow. I’ve already bet him at 10’s, and 11’s, but I’m hoping to top up bigger, as I can see a drift.
As I said though, it’s a cracker of a race, with dangers everywhere. I especially like the look of Jett, Powersbomb, Livelovelaugh, Best Behaviour, and Peaches and Cream. Very difficult to pick a backup in this.
1420 Sedgefield – Rock On Fruity 9’s
1545 Leopardstown – Annie Pender EW 6pl
1650 Leopardstown – Midnight Maestro 11’sMarch 7, 2021 at 16:25 #1527847Well done yesterday Bobby, great selections particularly The Midnight Club runner at 33/1! I remember backing The Midnight Club in the Thyestes years ago when he made a terrible mistake down the back straight but stayed on strongly for a heartbreaking second place. Every time I think of your thread it brings the pain of that result back!
Great result with the first and third at Leopardstown there too at nice prices, you are on fire, but am hoping you’ll let me have the 16:50.
March 7, 2021 at 16:43 #1527850I remember that Tommy, so unlucky that day.
Thanks, Fiveaftermidnight one of my favourite winners of the season that.
So close there at Leopardstown, but I just stuck with Annie Pender. Kicking myself though, She’s Commanche was 16’s last night when I mentioned her. Got a decent lay in running on Annie, but wish I’d covered Commanche.
March 7, 2021 at 17:38 #1527863That was definitely a frustrating day, but money back in running for the three of them, and a small profit on Rock On Fruity.
Hopefully nothing midweek, before a quiet enough weekend. That’s the plan anyway.
Certainly not betting him tomorrow, but hoping to see another big run from Gee Rex.
