Winners still a bit thin on the ground recently, but much much better Saturday.

With The Caspian Caviar being a bigger betting race, I comfortably made a decent profit on it thanks to Midnight Shadow, top of the hill he went very low, and I cleaned up. I laid off on Master Tommytucker two out as well, so a really good race for me. No lying though, bit gutted afterwards, he was the best of the rest by some way, and at the top of the hill, thought I had it in the bag. Just bumped into one though, and when you bet in these big handicaps, you just have to take it on the chin when you get mugged by a proper plot job. Still, good profit, so I got over it quickly.

Ballyandy was a big bet too, and chuffed to bits with him, while coming out of the back straight at Doncaster, made a smaller profit on Give Me A Copper.

I took a small loss on Off You Go before the race, as the market vibes were brutal, and the other JP horse was getting hammered. He actually ran an interesting race, and I’d have a look at him again if he stepped up in trip.

Ibleo ran a decent race too, and he’ll be bet again. I could have laid him before Sky Pirate loomed up, but it was a smaller bet, and with the bet being at short enough odds, I didn’t see the point.

Ardhill, was a bigger bet than Ibleo, and he was very disappointing. I fancied a big run from him.

Some really strong races today, and should set us up nicely for the crazy Christmas Period.

Big fan of Dashel Drasher, and he should step up from his comeback run at Haydock. He’ll have to though, as he was a shade disappointing that day, even allowing for how impressive Master Tommytucker was. He’s quite popular in the market, but I’m still undecided.

The more I look at Main Fact, the more I suspect that this is where the run comes to an end, but I’m on at 14’s, and I’ll be disappointed if I can’t get a feee race out of him.

Regal Encore is the main bet in The Silver Cup. The few lbs extra should stop him, but he should still go well, and I’ll be looking to at least get a decent lay out of him too. Cracking race, and I was torn between Enfant Roi, The Conditional, and especially Beware The Bear, but I couldn’t split them. All got serious looking chances. I’ll instead have a smaller go on Sub Lieutenant. Yes, he’s a Gigginstown/Elliot cast off, but he’s on a smashing mark, and jock tajes a few pounds off, and she’s certainly not the worst. Hopefully beat 33’s.

In the last, with Harambe and Malaya. Wanted to bet Time Flies By too, but I missed the price. Also want to bet Night Edition too, but no option to stick with the main two.

Had the same problem in The Tommy Whittle, likes a few of them, especially Crixus’s Escape, but decided to stick with Sam’s Adventure.

I’d love Captain Moirette to drift a little, as on a busy day, he’s a bit short, but I think we’ll see a different horse from Carlisle, and I’m swaying towards betting him.

McGowans Pass is a big fancy in the 1405, and I’ve had a go on him, so I’d like it back at the very least, and Planet Nine has a big chance on his Ayr run, and jockey takes a valuable seven off.

Dashel Drasher, and particularly Captain Moirette, are possibly getting bet, but will depend on odds.

    1405 Haydock – McGowans Pass 9’s
Long Walk – Main Fact 14’s
    Tommy Whittle – Sam’s Adventure 20’s EW
Silver Cup – Regal Encore 9’s
    Silver Cup – Sub Lieutenant
    1515 Haydock – Planet Nine
    Betfair Trophy – Malaya 16’s
Betfair Trophy – Harambe 25’s EW

Happy with that today, really decent day.

With the field down to three, I took Dashel Drasher day the 7’s, and he had the other pair in trouble a fair way out, before it got a bit nervy at the end, but delighted with him.

Not as happy as I was with Sam’s Adventure at the 20’s, and although you’d have to have backed him to notice it, it was an unreal ride.

Very nice profits in running from McGowans Pass and Regal Encore as well, and to top it off, I had Sub Lieutenant at 80’s EW 4 places.

The pair in the last at Ascot were a disappointment though, as was Planet Nine.

Definitely playing tomorrow, though not sure there’s anything I’d be confident of putting up.

Yes, the Drasher was a fine pick. I wasn’t sure if you would have backed it, but you drew my attention to it. Good start. Sam’s Adventure was an eventful race with two or three(?) unseating, etc, but he ran well. Of course, I never got your odds. Sub Lieutenant I got at 33s, but then he went out to 66s, so I backed him again (small stakes) and ended up level the day. Not So Sleepy is an old friend of mine but after last time, I decided not to risk him…That’s how it goes. Beware the Bear was Joe’s strong tip, too, but the bear was still waking up from his hibernation. He doesn’t owe me anything after his Cheltenham win in 2019.

    Thanks for your selections yesterday.

I am having just the one bet today on Fox le Bel at Thurles. Time he won.

Thanks Grass, yeah, best day for a while, and really chuffed with Drasher. No idea where he’d go next, but he might continue to be one of those underrated types.

Thanks Sungold, a decent day, Sam’s Adventure was an amazing ride from Brian Hughes. Sub Lieutenant was a real bonus, as I’d seriously considered swerving him with him drifting through the day. Drasher was a 50/50 whether I bet him, but all down to his price holding when it went to three runners.

Beware The Bear very disappointing, and glad I swerved him.

Thought I’d stick up Boxing Day bets early.

Even with the number of meetings cut, I still had a crazy amount on the shortlist, and there’s been a fair cull.

    Kempton
Best line up in years, it’s a cracker. I can’t see past Cyrname or Clan Des Obeaux, but at his very best, Lostintranslation is a very big price, while as much as I’ve never been a big fan, it’s surely mad to write off Santini.

It’s never been a massive betting race for me this, my usual approach is fun bets on an outsider or two, with a realistic view, that it’s always going to be one of the market leaders who takes it.

I’m left with Frodon and Real Steel Antepost. I think that Frodon could surprise, and I’m happy to top up, as with the size of my AP, I’d be gutted if he did it, and I only got a few quid back.

Not so Real Steel. I was chuffed to bits with a very early 40’s on him, but after his Ascot run, I’m not as keen. I’ll stick with the early bet on him, and I won’t complain if he surprised me.

The real issue I have is Waiting Patiently. Put him up many a time here, and he’s been a regular on these threads over the years, ever since I frantically grabbed on to Rob North’s coattails with him. It’s hard to justify another bet in this, but 20’s, 25’s is appealing.

In the finale, I’m chancing Jarveys Plate. He ran in The Kauto Star last year, and didn’t disgrace himself. Not done much since, but he’s fair slipped down the weights, and he looks a nice price at 25’s. Haven’t decided Win or EW

    Leopardstown
I thinks it’s a fairly disappointing card on Day One, but in the opener, I’ll have a smaller bet on Gee Rex. I really liked him on the flat, and though he’s screaming “Handicaps”, I just think he’s interesting around 33’s, with a run under his belt. Probably EW for him.

In the 1230, torn between Melburnian, and Wide Receiver. I’ve bet Wide Receiver “any race” for Cheltenham at 20’s, so makes sense to leave him here at 3’s. With that in mind, taken 16’s Win Melburnian. Put him up as one to take note of after his run at Newmarket last year, and he’s been a shade disappointing. I’m convinced he’s better than that, and 16’s might look huge come Saturday morning. I think that price is wrong.

The 1450 is a cracker of a Handicap Chase. I can’t split Timoteo, or A Wave Of The Sea. No idea what to do. Both nice prices just now. Don’t know whether to split stakes or play both. Also considering sitting it out, but got time to make my mind up.

Looking forward to seeing Felix Desjy on the card too.

    Limerick
Paul Townend heads here to ride Asterion Forlonges, and he looks the star attraction, but equally, Mark Walsh heads here too, and takes the ride on Janidil. I just like this horse, and though a tough race, he’s got to be bet around 6’s. Asterion very impressive last time though.

    Wetherby
Sticking with Guitar Pete in a very decent Rowland Meyrick, and could make a case for all of them. Might play four places.

EDIT – Now split between The Dutchman and Windsor Avenue

    Wincanton
At 13-2, I’d give Midnight Midge a big chance. Know him well, and this looks a good opportunity. 13-2 very fair, but he’s unproven on Heavy, and I’ll hold fire for now.

    1200 Leapordstown – Gee Rex 50’s EW
    1230 Leapordstown – Melburnian 16’s
    Rowland Meyrick – The Dutchman
Rowland Meyrick – Windsor Avenue 15-2
    Faugheen Novices – Janidil
King George – Frodon 40’s EW
King George – Real Steel 40’s EW
    1535 Kempton – Jarveys Plate

Thanks Mark, hope you and the family had a good one.

Yeah, got both Christmas and New Year off this year, can’t remember the last time that happened, so well fed and watered.

Gee Rex was an inspired selection! With a different ride, the race was his, I think. Brilliant, started at 40s.

Thanks mate, delighted with that. Definitely could’ve got closer, but a nice winner too. He was solid on the flat Rex, so expecting more.

Fab for your price on Frodon! Was on, too, but 25’s. Masterly tactics by Bryony.

Well done mate. I had a lot more on 25’s myself than 40’s, but what a ride, I was fairly confident the whole way.

    What a day.

The top up was crucial on Frodon, and having a good few quid at the 25’s, to go with the 40’s, and I was a happy boy. I had the forecast as well (and Tricasts with Real Steel) didn’t get time to put it up. A minor moan though, and I just love that pair. Now to hope they consider The Ryanair, but it’ll probably be Gold Cup.

Day started as well as I could hope for, with Gee Rex getting the EW at 50’s. As Sungold mentioned, he could easily have won it.

The next at Leopardstown was even stranger. Having bet Melburnian at 16’s on Christmas Eve, unbelievably, I was able to bet him at 270’s before the off, and I made a smashing profit on him as he looked up out of the back straight.

The day was rounded off nicely by Jarveys Plate, getting the EW money at 28’s.

Of the rest, I could have made a profit on The Rowland Meyrick if I had laid The Dutchman, but even with two selections, it was a small betting race for me.

At Limerick, Janidil was bitterly disappointing, and his jumping went to pieces, and was easily beat.

It’s been something of a year for you! Great. I shall never forget that King George as it confounded all the critics. Some combination.
