As I said the other day, this is undoubtedly one of the big racing days of the season, and The Ladbroke is easily one of the 5 biggest races of the season. As such, it’s a big betting race for me, and one of my bigger betting races. I get it wrong plenty, so always a costly day when that happens, but win or lose, I just love it.
It’s just the best days racing, and the supporting cards at Fairyhouse and Newcastle are decent as well.
In the big one, I’m with American win only at 16’s, and a long term target of mine this, but there’s that worry about the ground. He’s a cracking horse, and I have a small bet on him to do the Cheltenham Double at 100’s. For anyone that knows me, Double Ross is one of my all time favourites, he’s been a cash machine for me the last 4 years. Everything in his favour today. Course, Trip, Ground, and Stable Form, all in his favour, and with 7 Places available, I’ve topped up. I’m also with his stablemate Cogry ew at 33’s. If I could be with another, it would be Singlefarmpayment, but he would be great for my Gold Cup “Book”, so don’t need to bet him, while Total Recall would be great for my Grand National “Book”. I’ve went on about Regal Encore a lot the last few weeks, and though I prefer him for Aintree or Chepstow this month, at 100’s, it means I can have a very small go on him here to cover the stakes, in the unlikely event that today is the day.
American WIN 16’s
Ladbrokes/Cheltenham Gold Cup Double 100’s
Double Ross 40’s EW
Double Ross 40’s EW (7 Places)
Cogry 33’s EW
Regal Encore SAVER 100’sThe Fighting Fifth should be comfortable for Buveur D’Air, while I’m kicking myself for not taking the 8’s on Irving, that was a steal. I’ve taken a chance on Flying Tiger Ante-Post at 25’s ew, and hoping he can nick a place. He was a massive winner for me at Cheltenham, and has ran well enough since. A sporting chance of a place I reckon.
In the supporting race at Newcastle, The Rehearsal Chase, I’m with Wakanda and Yala Enki at 10’s, and happy with that pair. Fairly confident of a run for my money. In the 1305, I do like Imperial Eloquence, and he looks big at 10’s, and just topped up a small ew at 10’s, having bet 8’s earlier. It’s likely I reckon that he’ll be targetted at one of The Cheltenham Meetings, but happy to take a small risk on him.
Back at Newbury, and I’m still working out that 1350, it’s a minefield. I put up Doesyourdogbite a few times last year, while Court Minstrel is another of those old friend I always follow. Old Guard & Couer De Lion complicate matters further, and not made my mind up yet. The 1320 is easier for me. Very keen on Little Jon at 16’s, and I think that Potters Cross could run well at around 14’s.
The 1325 at Fairyhouse is a belter, and Nearly Namad looks strong at 11’s. Had a saver on him, but the 2 that catch my eye are Squouateur & Caolaneioin. Squouateur looks as if today is not the plan, but he’s just big at 20’s, and I ain’t letting that slip through my finger. I had a big payday from Caolaneoin at Leapordstown a couple of years ago, and though I’m not 100% that I put that up on here, I certainly put his last 2 runs up on here, when he got stuffed. On those two runs, he deserves to be 33’s, but he was travelling like a dream in one of them, before emptying close home, and it’s not long back he was both first and second at Punchestown, and he was second in this last year. I’ve had a go on him.
Rest of the Fairyhouse card is solid, and I’m very happy to have nicked 5’s on Midnight Stroll.
Just a fab days’s racing, and really looking forward to it, win or lose.
December 2, 2017 at 22:18 #1330091Well today was definitely “Savers” Day, with Regal Encore & Nearly Namad really pulling it out of the fire.
As mentioned, The Ladbroke is a big betting race for me, and getting Regal Encore in there, made a hell of a difference, and any return from a 100-1 shot is to be enjoyed. Although a saver, he did pay for over the stakes, and as it would have been a costly race otherwise, then he really did do me proud. Hopefully he can be allowed to take his chance at Chepstow. Very happy with the fact that I’ve been banging his drum for a while now, and good to get a few quid back from him.
In the 1325 at Fairyhouse, Nearly Namad was equally as welcome a saver. I’d put a few quid on Caolaneion, and was also keen on Squouateur, so the 11’s for Nearly Namad was to cover those stakes, so for him to win at 20’s, was just outstanding, really happy with that one.
I was equally as happy with Flying Tiger. Maybe not my biggest Ante-Post of the season, but any return at 25’s is a welcome one.
Again at Fairyhouse, Midnight Stroll really does look a good one, and to get him well ahead of SP was great. One of the advantages with my “midnights”, is that I know they’re coming, and ready to nip in for early prices for the ones that matter, and I enjoyed that one a lot.
Of the rest, no money down on Livelovelaugh, but bar a couple of slow jumps, I thought he ran well, and travelled really smoothly. Don’t see why he can’t go to Cheltenham, maybe a dark horse for The JLT, or NH Chase.
Of the losers, well, don’t know where to start with The Ladbroke. Too early to say how American would have got on, but I tend to think he would have struggled to go with the front two, while no excuses at all for the NTD pair. Also at Newbury, Little Jon ran well, and I’ll bet him again, but Potters Cross looked very poor, and I’ll be careful with him. I bet Court Minstrel in the Handicap Hurdle, and he was never sighted, and although I wasn’t on him, it was good to see Old Guard win, as he’d been another I was banging the drum for. Less said about my Rehearsal pair the better, and also at Newcastle, Imperial Eloquence.
Very happy with the days results though, and winners at 5’s and 20’s, as well as placed efforts at 25’s, and 100’s is a decent days haul.
December 2, 2017 at 22:49 #1330092Cracking days action on Sunday, with Fairyhouse topping the bill.
I don’t go in heavy on the novice hurdles at Cheltenham, as I can’t be bothered with all the second guessing, but hoping that Le Richebourg can keep improving. On at 33’s for The Supreme, I’m obviously sceptical that he had a summer campaign, and he’s up against some live ones here, but he should run ok.
The Hattons Grace looks all about Apples Jade and Nichols Canyon, but I’m hopeful of a good show from the slightly underrated Mick Jazz. Had a small go Ante-Post for this at 25’s, and have topped up at 33’s, both ew. I want to add Supasundae at 10’s as a win saver, but 2 in this field is pushing it, if you’re not with the front two.
The Drinmore is always a nice race, and although I won’t be betting, it would be nice to see Rathvinden win, as he’s one of my Novice Chasers to follow.
The big handicap hurdle is a screamer, it really is, and I’m with Top Othe Ra & West Coast Time, both ew Ante-Post. I’m definitely topping up on the pair of them. In the Porterstown Handicap, I’m very keen on Thunder and Roses, and Fine Theatre at 33’s, and 16’s, again AP EW, and have already topped up on the pair win only tonight, particularly Thunder, and he’s turning into a big bet.
I will do some perms tomorrow, but having to whittle down, and not sure how many to do. If I do any from Leicester, it’ll only be in The Veterans, and it’ll be either The Romford Pele, or Astracad, while Samson, who ran well for a long way for me at Cheltenham, has a more realistic target here, and he’ll be bet on his own.
A few interesting races at Carlisle, and Wide Awake might make the persm too. I’ve already bet the well handicapped Purcells Bridge at 9’s, and plan to add Buckled, and Bourne on their own as well.
Really decent days racing then, and if I can negotiate out of going to a local Garden Centre (apparently it’s very “Christmassy”, and I’ll love it FFS) then I’m looking forward to taking it in. Be nice to get a few winners, but after two profitable days, I’ll keep myself ahead, and not be too greedy, bar maybe on Thunder and Roses lol
December 3, 2017 at 05:41 #1330105Good luck today VTC.
I’m also betting West Coast Time. I think she’ll be better over further (maybe even 3m in time) but 122 is such a lenient opening mark that he might just be able to get away with it today.
December 3, 2017 at 10:47 #1330135Yeah Soldier, cracking opening mark, and it just looks wrong. At those kind of odds I’m more than happy to have a go. Good luck, and even if it doesn’t go to plan today, very much one to keep an eye on.
December 3, 2017 at 20:37 #1330227Well, back down to earth today, and a very poor day all round.
Biggest loser was Thunder and Roses, who was a strong fancy to make the frame, and he just did not turn up. Had a few quid on, and he never looked like doing it.
Mick Jazz was a much smaller bet, and I was fairly happy with him. Just outclassed in the end, and he should have a top end handicap within reach this year.
As for The Bar One Hurdle, I really couldn’t have got it more wrong, with Top Othe Ra & West Coast both running abysmally. I don’t have any more to say on that one lol
At Carlisle, Purcells Bridge was spotted crossing the line with my cash, at around 7 o’clock tonight, while at least Bourne (eventually) gave me a run for my money.
Six horses, and one placed, not great. For the avoidance of doubt, the perms didn’t come in either lol
Struggling to find any plus points, but there are some……
1. Always good to see them bow out unscathed, and Bourne made it out the other end in one piece. Hope he has a nice retirement. Think that’s only the second time I’ve bet him, but always liked him.
2. After 2 profitable days, any other year it would have been carnage today, but the strict staking I’m doing this year, meant that although they all performed poorly, it didn’t hurt the pocket too bad.
3. The “Hennessy” meeting at Newbury is always feast or famine for me, and The Fairyhouse one ain’t much easier. Throw in Newcastle, and it’s tough going. Just very happy to escape in profit, and I owe those 2 savers plenty.
Very definitely a quiet week ahead though.
December 4, 2017 at 18:03 #1330372VTC – I know you’re a big fan of Ivan Grozny. Had you heard that he has been sold to America? Clondaw Warrior too.
December 4, 2017 at 19:05 #1330382Thanks Soldier, was totally unaware of that.
It’ll be a shame not to see him again, but I hope he has some success over there. I just wish he was that wee bit better here, but by god I always put my money where my mouth is with him……………that day at Aintree when he was allowed to go off at Double Figures, happy days lol
December 6, 2017 at 11:22 #1330622Bob no bets today for me was tempted in big staying race at Ludlow was on Audacious Plan last time but DR Newland poor record at course. And 2nd fave with Kim Bailey has a 1-22 in chase races so left it alone
Also you must be happy at Exeter on friday a big staying handicap and on saturday got Welsh national trail and marathon at Sandown any early views on them i give mine on friday morning.
December 6, 2017 at 17:55 #1330678No bets for me until Friday Darren at the earliest, having a quiet week.
Yeah, always have a go on that Exeter Marathon, but haven’t even looked at it yet. I’ll wait till final decs, and that’ll be the same with The Chepstow & Sandown races, though I have had a peak at those races, and like the look of a few, particularly Bob Ford, and Benbens.

Interesting. To run on Lasix? That would explain the in/out form.
Or some other reason?
December 7, 2017 at 00:53 #1330747Certainly an interesting one, but I hope he does himself proud.
December 7, 2017 at 21:57 #1330878Going for a couple in the old Devon Marathon tomorrow. Big fan of Yanmare, and thought he was unlucky here last time. In good hands, and looks well treated over a trip that’ll surely suit. 7’s to win seems fair. Very risky, as he was short of what I expected last time, but to chase him home, I’ve went for Umberto Dolivate each way at 20’s, and had a small win top up at 25’s. He surely can’t be as disinterested as he was last time, and this should bring out some improvement hopefully. Few quid on Yanmare so I’ll need a saver (win only), and it’ll be either Another Venture, or my old pal Rigadin De Beauchene. I’m chewing that one over at the moment.
Couple at Sandown as well, but smaller bets, and only for an interest as I’m having a bet at Exeter anyway. Pete The Feat could have achieved a lot more, but his jumping has always been pretty sketchy. His win here in January in The Veterans Chase was brilliant, and after his poor jumping resurfaced here last time, I’m hoping he can win at 18’s, as he surely can’t put another round like that in, and he looks overpriced if he can. In the next, Quothquan looks up against on his run at Fontwell, but I did see glimmers of hope for him, and an off day from one of the market leaders could see him ew value at 25’s.
December 8, 2017 at 12:24 #1330951Bob agree with Yanmere in race today some rogues in that race there who find it hard to win a race
BENBENS at Sandown think he starting to come back into form he is and the NTD keep winning big races on a saturday
I give Shotgun Paddy another chance at Chepstow
And forget to mention there 4m at Kelso on sunday i got to back Nakadam he my cliff horse he like my horse to follow like Ballykhan is for you mate
December 8, 2017 at 12:45 #1330954Reckon there are several plots. Barton Gift may have too much weight, so Bindon Mill.
December 8, 2017 at 14:11 #1330965Pete The Feat!!
*applause*
December 8, 2017 at 16:45 #1330992Well done! Another two nice, juicy winners Bobby.
