Bumper winner looked fine (from a distance) it was Now McGinty (16/1-4/1) who didn’t look up to much.
January 8, 2017 at 01:25 #1280741Some gamble that, but I’m totally with you on the winner there, he looks decent, and he’s surely got a nice future. Watched it back a couple of times, and visually very impressive, and considering connections, the spring festivals must be on the agenda.
January 11, 2017 at 13:53 #1281436Not surprisingly I will probably be the only one talking about it but where does the Don Cossack news leave Empire Of Dirt? I firmly believe he is the best chaser Gigginstown have got. The Ryanair remains the right race for him but I was thinking of throwing a couple of quid at the Gold Cup.
January 11, 2017 at 18:18 #1281467At 50’s with Stan James, I think it would be advisable. I’m amazed at that price standing, Grand National or no Grand National, I’d agree he’s there best chance now, and I’m very happy to see him in there.
January 11, 2017 at 18:36 #1281474If it were three miles I think it would be a no-brainer, it’s just those extra two furlongs. In an ideal world I need him to come there cantering in the Irish Gold Cup and then get so obviously outstayed that the Grand National idea is immediately abandoned. It might be more luck than anything else but at least the break since his last run has kept him off the worst of the winter ground which is what I wanted.
January 11, 2017 at 19:04 #1281487Yeah, he should be fresh enough, and fingers crossed one of us is smiling on the last 2 days of The Festival with him. I do think he’ll head National, but just as confident that he’ll do it via one of our races for him at Cheltenham.
January 11, 2017 at 20:46 #1281499I put him up for your ‘competition’ and thought it would be pretty terrible if I put up a 50/1 winner and hadn’t backed him so thought it sensible enough to have a cautious each-way. The Ryanair bet is a straight win. Fingers crossed to at least get a run in one of them.
Sadly, the weather forecast looks pretty bleak for the next few days.
January 13, 2017 at 17:05 #1281790Hi Bob
Any views on Betfair hurdle and Skybet chase i only seen markets so not check if weights out yet for both races
January 14, 2017 at 14:48 #1282065Hi Darren, sorry for the late reply, I missed your post.
In The Betfair, I like Sutton Place 25’s, and Boite 50’s, and I’ve had a few quid on.
In The Skybet, I like Ziga Boy & Rock The Kasbah, both 16’s, but haven’t bet them yet, but plan to soon.
January 15, 2017 at 17:25 #1282257Bob any views on the handicaps at festival i see the markets out for them i put a few of mine up in a few days.
January 15, 2017 at 21:40 #1282286Sent an email to ATR today regarding Empire To Dirt. To be fair John Hunt did pretty well read it out word for word. The words ‘ludicrous’ and ‘Grand National’ were not far apart. Unfortunately, it didn’t get a positive response from Burke who simply went with idea that stepping up from 2m5f to 3m meant that he was a stayer. It makes you wonder if he is considered one of the bright sparks in the weighing room.
I think I have just got to hope someone in the media picks up the baton or of course the horse does the talking for himself at Leopardstown.
January 16, 2017 at 00:35 #1282312Brilliant, what show was that on stilvi? He’s came way down in price in the last 24 hours for The Gold Cup on the exchanges, last price matched 40’s.
I think our best bet would be him running a big race in The Irish Gold Cup, which is the 3 days before the weights are published for Aintree. Another factor could be Giggs dwindling team for the G1’s, while they have plenty of ammo for The National.

It was a quiet day on ATR yesterday with just Fairyhouse and an Irish guest so they took emails in between races although I think mine was just after the last race.
Didn’t realise the National weights were after the Irish Gold Cup so as you say plenty resting on the outcome of that race, quite possibly everything.
Bit surprised you haven’t put up Ordinary World as a possible for the Grand Annual. He is the one handicap bet I am thinking about at the moment, He surely wouldn’t be 20/1 on the day.
Not great from Mall Dini the other day but it was wrong ground and wrong trip as opposed to just wrong ground the previous time. Hopefully, the fact that he was sent off odds on suggests there is more to come given optimum conditions.
January 16, 2017 at 10:03 #1282328yeah, the date for the weights is crucial. The Haydock National Trail is always just before or just after they are published, and love trying to second guess connections.
That was a rush job for the handicaps when I came in from work last night, I knew I would miss a good few……..Ordinary World is very much on my shortlist for The Grand Annual, but my pocket has me fixated with The Arkle lol
Talking of handicaps, do you think they would consider that route for Mall Dini?
January 16, 2017 at 17:21 #1282384I caught a snippet of Eddie O’Leary on ATR and it sounded reasonably encouraging. On the other hand it appears that Elliott just wants to throw as many darts as possible at these big handicaps irrespective of whether a horse is suited to a particular race or, as in this case, not.
I think Mall Dini definitely wants three miles and good ground. Given his absolute ideal (and assuming there haven’t been any physical issues) I can see him finding a stone and a half on his last two runs. Hopefully, I am not being overly optimistic but the RSA would still be my first choice. I did add Our Duke but despite the prices I would prefer Mall Dini. I don’t think they will go amateur riders so the only other option would be the handicap on the first day. It isn’t the type of race I enjoy with too much deadwood at the top of the handicap just enjoying a day out at the expense of the potential improvers. Racing Post appear to have Mall Dini on 139. You would probably have a much better idea than me whether that would get him in.
January 17, 2017 at 11:26 #1282468Yeah, caught that O’Leary interview myself, and doesn’t look a lost cause……yet!!!
After “greening out” on my RSA “Book”, I went in again, and had that bet on Fagan. It wasn’t the best comeback of the season, so I’m back to leaving it alone now. I think Our Duke is a wise move, as if he was with one of the bigger owner/trainer combos, he’d be a lot shorter, he’s done nothing wrong. I still like Mall Dini as well, though I do have that notion of handicaps. His mark of 139 would see him comfortably into any of them, and that 3 miler on day 1 looks like the most suitable. Can’t stress enough that I’d still send him RSA, but that mark does give them options.
He could even go for that Novices Handicap on Day 1, 139 is perfect for that, though surely he won’t head there.
January 17, 2017 at 13:50 #1282481Had a little scan of the handicaps last night. I see the Mall Dini ‘team’ have Presenting Percy quoted for the Pertemps. He should appreciate quicker ground but just not that sure he showed enough in the qualifier although of course that might have been the intention?
Surely Jury Duty, who is widely quoted, hasn’t qualified?
Getting very close to persuading myself to take that 20/1 Ordinary World. If he turns up he is likely to be 12/1 or less. Given the nature of that race it is good to know he has shown that he doesn’t have to make the pace.
