“Best performance in a British flat handicap since… ?”

Really good question – I wouldn’t know what OR equivalent Sea Pigeon was running off when winning the Ebor but Sea Pigeon wasn’t a Group 1 Flat winner so my guess is it wouldn’t be as high as 120.

It might be the best Flat Handicap effort in 64 years when Gladness won the 1958 Ebor.

I nominated Sergeant Cecil for his Cesarewich win. Not because of the weight he was carrying but because he became the only horse in racing history to win the Northumberland Plate, Ebor and Cesarewich in the same season.

For me that is still the greatest feat by a flat handicapper that I know of.

According to the Racing Post database Sergeant Cecil had an OR of 109 (though it doesn’t say if that was a peak figure) and a peak RPR of 119.

Trueshan ran off an OR of 120 today and has a peak RPR of 122 and I expect today they will give him a new career best.

Sergeant Cecil was a marvellous racehorse, but I think Trueshan has the edge on him.

Game of opinions, though, of course.

Funnily enough I had a look at the same database this evening Ian.

Different accomplishments. In terms of a one off performance Trueshans is as good an achievement as there has been in a flat handicap.

To win the three biggest staying handicaps all in the same season is something unparalleled in the sport.

    Two fantastic horses.

Trueshan would give Sergeant Cecil at least seven pounds and beat him.

    In my opinion.

One is a genuine Group One performer; the other a top class handicapper.

I haven’t said that Cecil was a better horse than Trueshan. You asked what was the last great performance in a handicap and I stated that I think it was Sergeant Cecil winning an unprecedented treble.

It’s achievements we’re comparing not the horses individual talents.

“You asked what was the last great performance in a handicap…”

Nope. That’s not quite what I asked.

I wonder how many times the Northumberland Plate winner has put up a better performance than the Irish Derby hero?

RPR have awarded Trueshan a 128 for Saturday’s performance (the highest rating they have ever recorded in a flat handicap, apparently), while Westover has been given a 124.

It’ll be interesting to see what Timeform come up with in their weekly ratings update tomorrow.

Timeform have moved Trueshan up to 130 and Westover to 127.

Inflation-happy RPR and Timeform are like next week’s fuel pump prices.

I’m camped out waiting for the more sombre BHA Performance ratings tomorrow.

Sea Pigeon couldn’t run in staying group races, as he was a gelding, so had to run in handicaps giving lumps of weight away.

However, it was great to see a geniune Gp1 racehorse running in a handicap; would like to see more of it, especially over jumps.
