It’s not just Tories, though, with Diane Abbott being the most notorious example from the other side of the house.
July 18, 2022 at 21:46 #1607645Oh, absolutely – and of course Blair and many others were privately educated.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 18, 2022 at 22:02 #1607646The point is, I think Starmer is from far more modest beginnings than many would think, as is Sunak. Both are there on ability and if (big if of course) the next election comes down to those two, background is a non-issue. I think it probably is regardless tbh.
July 18, 2022 at 22:17 #1607647We agree Richard.
Sunak and Starmer’s education is a non-issue.
Value Is EverythingJuly 18, 2022 at 22:19 #1607648I must say I find it very hard to see how the Members could elect anyone other than Sunak, regardless of what the Members’ polls say.
He is significantly more intelligent and articulate than any of his rivals and his “guess what?” punchy style will resonate more with the wider public than anything the others have to offer.
For him to lose to Truss would be like Gary Kasparov losing to a gerbil in a game of chess.

Did they care about Blair’s background or could even name which school
He went to ?July 18, 2022 at 22:37 #1607650The more this goes on, the more I think they’d be barmy to elect anyone other than Sunak.
The rest are ‘short term pain, long term gain’ from a non-Tory point of view.
If they pick one of the others I’d argue it’s the Tory membership that is out of touch more than the MPs.
July 18, 2022 at 22:38 #1607651The way Conservative members eventually vote will be as much about who can win the next election for the Conservatives than anything else.
If coming down to a two horse race between Sunak and Truss, then I think they’ll go for Sunak for that reason. Truss may be popular with the right of the party, but a leader needs to be popular with other voters.
Value Is EverythingJuly 18, 2022 at 22:47 #1607652Truss’s lead over Sunak in the latest ConservativeHome poll of around 900 of the 200,000 members was only slender.
Watching them both for an hour in the ITV debate, Sunak was head and shoulders above her.
Truss came out fighting, but Sunak was on another level and to be fair to him his punchy “Guess what?” language was far more populist than Truss’s despite their respective backgrounds.
As Richard says, the Members would be barmy to pick Truss over him.
I still hope they do, though!
The next two years would be Hell but – no pain, no gain!
Truss would get absolutely tanked at a General Election.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 18, 2022 at 22:48 #1607653That’s exactly how they should be thinking.
As someone who wants to see the back of them, he’s the one I’d least want to see in charge. However I also want what’s best for the country and, of the options available, he’s the one.
Would be bloody funny if Mordaunt won though, purely for the awkward position the Mail would find itself in.
July 18, 2022 at 22:51 #1607654Would be hilarious, but really can’t see it happening now.
It’s weird because I still think Mordaunt will be second going into the final day, but it’s all going to fall apart for her then.

Boris won 3 ‘Big’ Elections, including two in Labour London. Only Thatcher and Blair can better or match it, post WW2.
Not sure supposed privilege matters these days. He is proof of that – 3 big election wins in 11 years.
It’s more what you do with it that might get up the electors noses.
If Sunak wins the media and social media will bring up his wife’s non-dom (again) and the youtube clip of him saying he had no working class mates.MSM esp the main TV networks are as anti-Tory as i’ve known them.
July 19, 2022 at 00:23 #1607665The only thing I’ve taken out of watching parliament this evening is this. Michael Fabricant. How did the evolution of British politics produce someone like him….

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 19, 2022 at 09:04 #1607678Late last night Robert Peston passed on a rumour that around 15 Tungendhat supporters will today switch to Mordaunt.
Newspapers full of facile analysis about her campaign “stalling” this morning – she was never going to pick up votes off the Braverman crowd.
Today is her day – I think the other Tungendhat votes will split between Sunak (taking him over 120) and Badenoch, but not enough to catch Truss.
Today will be tough for Truss – she won’t make headway – but tomorrow is potentially colossal for her as she could get enough of the Badenoch vote to propel her past Mordaunt into that vital second place slot.
I think it’s going to be close, though.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 19, 2022 at 09:18 #1607683A nice dismissal of Liz Truss’s claim to have been brought up in a ‘red wall’ area
July 19, 2022 at 09:25 #1607684If you read the front pages of the Mail and the Express today you’d think Truss was already in second place.
I detect a distinct lack of enthusiasm for Truss personally among the right wing of her own Party.
Sunak is actually plenty right wing enough for many of their tastes and the fact so many have put their faith in Badenoch thus far instead of Truss speaks volumes.
Many keep expecting the Badenoch vote to collapse in Truss’s favour, but it hasn’t done so far.
