You would have thought that Johnson would have learned from Corbyns mistake of surrounding himself by yes people and not the most competent ones. Then again since when has Johnson learned from his mistakes ( probably because he won’t acknowledge them as such).
July 18, 2022 at 14:17 #1607557Johnson will reckon he’s just one Tory election defeat away from being The Comeback Kid.
It’s a gruesome thought.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 18, 2022 at 16:02 #1607567Labour is absolutely delighted with how it is going. The only leader they feared has gone and they know the five they are now potentially up against are all duds.
This is what two senior Labour MPs had to say today:
Angela Rayner:
“I’m quite happy with any one of them. Because the one thing, and I kind of could see it… [Boris] had this, like, teflon coating… It’s like a little magic. Where he was able to get through to the public and get through to the places that I actually don’t see any of the five candidates that are standing having at the moment… Boris had so much going for him. He got an 80-seat majority and the country was really behind him… the five that we’ve got now I don’t think have got that.”
Lucy Powell:
“Boris in his heyday was a very formidable campaigner who was able to reach parts of the country that other Conservatives haven’t and wouldn’t be able to reach… What’s likely to come next is probably going to give Labour a bigger opportunity to reach back into the so-called ‘Red Wall.”
As I said earlier in this thread, Johnson was an awful character in many ways and it is difficult to feel sorry for him. But the Conservatives have got rid of a proven winner and are going to replace him with one out of five people who have never won a raffle between them. No wonder Starmer cannot believe his luck.
July 18, 2022 at 16:13 #1607570Oh come on
This needs a reminder of the classic Christine keeler quote doesn’t it?
Yes they’ve got rid of the storming Tiverton and Wakefield winner.
He is toxic and finished. That’s it
July 18, 2022 at 16:18 #1607572Rayner and Powell setting themselves up to look very silly after the next general election.
July 18, 2022 at 16:23 #1607574Maybe Rayner and Powell are having a bit of fun at the Conservatives expense but I think they do have a point.
Does anyone think any of the five will win a majority for the Conservatives at the next election? It is difficult to see it right now, unless Labour’s unpopularity in its former heartlands is even deeper than the polls show.
July 18, 2022 at 16:34 #1607575Yes. I believe the tories could and probably will
See that yougov piece I posted. There are too many myths about the “red wall”. Demographically and economically they’ve moved on
Someone stated that Southampton (which one I can’t recall) was the first “red wall”
Seat well before boris and didn’t a few seats such as Mansfield change under may? Also believe that rishi is a much more engaging and convincing speaker and communicator than kier
July 18, 2022 at 17:07 #1607582Agree that Starmer is a problem for Labour in the North. A wealthy, knighted lawyer representing a central London seat and who opposed Brexit makes it look like Labour chose the least suitable person to win back those seats.
That is partly why I thought they should have chosen Nandy who does at least represent a northern seat, although she has managed to halve its majority. And some of her more recent pronouncements have made her look crazy (male rapists who say they are female in women’s prisons anyone? It is OK on Planet Nandy).
July 18, 2022 at 17:17 #1607588I thought Nandy at one time too but there was that misstep and some others I think too? I’ve never been able to work out whether she’s talented or not
I think it’s Starmers personality more perhaps? I actually like and rate him but he just doesn’t excite. The millibands had a far far more privileged north London back ground (I’ll always prefer a surrey boy or Sarf Londoner to a north London gooner tosser anyway) but he doesn’t cut through with what is a particularly moving story of achievement
It’s like in life isn’t it? Some people have it and some don’t and there’s not much anyone can do about it
July 18, 2022 at 17:19 #1607591Saying Johnson was the only one they ever feared suits Labour’s agenda in these altered circumstances.

July 18, 2022 at 18:37 #1607609While you can question Starmer popularity up north he,s going potentially going to have a strong hand in London/South , Labour have 18 months/2 years to get out with there message , if we go into recession it’s very likely we,ll still be feeling it come election time ….the Tories have a difficult 2 years ahead

They’ll do what they always do: bluff their way through it, blame everyone else and then lob a tax cut at the public just before the election.
July 18, 2022 at 19:15 #1607615I don’t think Nandy would have been suitable to stand up against Johnson; Keir, imo was a perfect foil for Johnson’s lies and blustering. I wish the electorate would understand that Keir is from a much less privileged background than Corbyn and grew up far more steeped in Labour Party values. He only accepted his title because it made his mum proud. He could have easily carried on with his law work. Unlike Johnson he really is a politician because he wants to make this country a better place.
