My point about the RTÉ Champions League coverage is that it is brilliant television. The best sports coverage I can think of off the top of my head, along with the RTÉ Racing Coverage. It’s people presenting what they’re knowledgable in.
Your right and I think the key especially to RTE racing is they don’t overcomplicate things. Channel four currently have 11 presenters/hosts who they revolve from time to time… Why do they need 11 presenters?

The interesting thing is Highflyer Productions are responsible for both RTE and Channel Four racing so why such a difference???
July 30, 2010 at 20:20 #310079While we are on the subject.WTF is Richi Pershad doing on RUK…Golf/Snooker/Cricket/Tennis is there no end to this man’s talent?…mute on! after he said "This race is a real puzzle" for the 100th time!!

Channel 4 obviously aren’t alone in adopting a slightly different approach – Bravo, admittedly not famed for their sports coverage, currently have comedian Dave Gorman conducting player interviews at the European Darts Championship.
Come to think of it, Jim Rosenthal has been talking nonsense about almost every sport for what seems like decades – he still manages to find work.
July 30, 2010 at 20:48 #310084I’m with Joncol on this one. Like many racing afficionados we will just have to live with the fact that society, including TV programmes, change. Sports programmes on TV are not just for the sports fans, they are for everyone, whether we like it or not. I do not like it: the pop music on Ch4 Racing promoting their current or next meeting, the fashion parades at every meeting, etc. I want just the racing, with the associated facts and figures, and interviews with knowledgeable racing folk. But I am not a Canute. Dawson will provide the questions that non-racing fans want to ask, which will be a good thing for new fans. He will interview the crowds, ice-cream eating kids, and celebrities, which will be a bad thing, but inevitable. Also I’m old enough to remember Jim McGrath’s first TV pundit/commentator attempt – knowledgeable but atrocious. But be got better at it. Give Dawson as chance.
July 30, 2010 at 20:50 #310085Jeff Stelling has at least made it to Countdown
….which certainly took me by surprise……
Obviously Ive cracked a few off to Emma Spencer and will continue to do so but Im sure everyone has…
…a delightful way with words, but I wouldn’t be so sure…
Ladies, are we to do the same with Cattermole?

Would Thommo not satisfy your hunger?
July 31, 2010 at 01:16 #310118Re Matt Dawson,bring back tommo quick !
July 31, 2010 at 02:33 #310119It’s uncomfortable viewing for all racing enthusiasts, but he’s not there for us….
His walking of the course with Francome, yesterday, and the inevitable comparison between the track and a rugby pitch had me wincing.
It’s a shame, but it’s the way forward, right?
July 31, 2010 at 02:45 #310121We know it’s not the way forward, but….
next time he could always make a comparison to a ballroom floor to entertain "our" new viewers.
July 31, 2010 at 02:50 #310123Question : Why is everybody getting obsessed with bringing new people into the sport? Contrary to Racing For Change b****x there is enough interest in our sport, attendances on the whole are extremely good.
Channel 4 are bonkers – Channel 4 Racing is a horse racing programme, horse racing enthusiasts will tune in (if its any good) people with no interest in the sport won’t. No-one is suddenly going to watch it because Matt Dawson is on it.
For christs sake C4 get a grip its going from decline to complete and utter embarassment. Get rid of Plunkett, Spencer, Tom (most irritating git on TV) Lee, Dawson and anybody else that is clueless and bring in racing people that know their stuff. That way you may have a product, if you don’t I’ll give it two or three years and C4 will not have horse racing all.
Stop flogging a dead horse, stop being stubborn and sort this ridiculous mess out!! E-Mail me I’ll bloody do it!
July 31, 2010 at 05:59 #310125^Michael Owen would be ideal.
Would love to know what would be ideal about Owen apart from the fact that he likes flinging his cash at racing…….Very bland when interviewed, seems mired in predictable football style cliches (‘as I say’……..’at the end of the day’etc) and truly one of the dullest monotoned voices/accents I have ever heard…..from memory not sounding unlike the afore mentioned terminally dreadful Tom Lee

Spot on Ian, totally agree with you. I can’t see Channel 4 showing much, if any, racing in a few years at this rate.

This is the problem with people in Racing, we always think we’re better than the outsider so no wonder we have trouble getting people in the sport.
Just give him time, he has the reputation and contacts to do the sport justice and it doesn’t take long to learn the ins and outs of Racing really does it? Horse A travels over B distance beating C horse, all he needs to know is a few terms and research his history.
At least he has a personality, how Spencer and Tanya "can’t smile" Stevenson got a job i dont know
