Agree with you here, I don’t like him on there but won’t stop me
watching it, it’s still top class racing after all.Plus, I’ve gotta tune in for Emma

I think he comes across as a decent sports personality and I think that may prove more important to viewing figures than yet another so called horse racing expert…
Given that the morning line guests are usually jockeys or trainers the show surely has enough industry based input..

Anyway time for Celecbrity Masterchef..
Im suprised Dawson hasnt sneaked onto that too
July 28, 2010 at 19:21 #309467He’s actually clueless, although technically that’s not his fault.
It is, however, embarrassing to watch.
People saying "it’s a good idea" are just as clueless.
July 28, 2010 at 19:48 #309476Agreed. The bottom line is that it comes through loud and clear despite any amount of contrived conversations that he isn’t really interested in horseracing and he’s nowhere near a good enough a broadcaster to be an investigative guinea pig who can make discoveries that will appeal to or even attract new viewers………..existing ones like me just feel bored and patronised………….shame really because I’m enjoying the rest of the coverage this week…..particularly good to have Mac back.

The last two posts I think prove that old viewers are still tuning in,regardless of wether they like Dawson or not.
Channel four know hes not that knowledgable regarding horse racing. I doubt very much he is there for that reason but more so there to attract new viewers, lets face it the old team are never going to attract anyone bar existing horse racing fans..
Channel four knew they wouldn’t really be risking the existing audience by introducing Dawson and it does increase their chances of getting new viewers.
Wether its Dawson or somebody else if they want to increase and attract new viewers then the new host must not be somebody from a racing background, you need someone who appeals to non racing people to hopefully intice them to watch and gradually become interested in horse racing.
Maybe its not Dawson but it should not be somebody with a racing background. There are so many so called expert opinions on it at the moment that its off putting already, Ive heard of people watching Channel four on mute before

At the end of the day, Channel four don’t really have to keep existing viewers happy regarding the new presenter, they can take risks because if you switch off and decide to watch on RUK(if you have it) it doesn’t really matter to them………………….Both shows are produced by Highflyer Productions. They don’t really care which you watch, if you want to watch their races you have to watch on one of them….
Channel four have monopolly on racing especially with BBC ones lack of dedication to the sport…
They have it sewn up irrespective of who presents it.
July 28, 2010 at 20:45 #309494Channel 4 should try to get Ted Walsh permanently from RTÉ. I’m not sure his reaction to Richard Hughes’ ride today would go down well with Off-Com or whatever they’re called though. I was in stitches listening to it.
I’ll try to get a link for it in the next few days!

Who
is
Matt Dawson? Why is he a celebrity? Haven’t heard him as I’ve been following RUK exclusively, so just curious. My mother-in-law (not a keen race fan) switched on to see Dandino, and she didn’t know who he was either.
Of course
Mat
[sic.]
Dawson
(1820 – 1898) was one of the greatest trainers of all time, with 29 classic winners PLUS St. Simon to his name, but I don’t suppose C4 have signed him up? Having said which, nothing much nowadays would surprise me, and they’ve quite a few zombies on the team already.

No, not
that
Mat Dawson, Pinza, though I suspect he’d be rather more informative – even in his current state – than his sadly lacklustre namesake.
Assuming there wasn’t a degree of sarcasm in your post – it’s often hard to tell – Matt Dawson is a former Wasps and England scrum-half who has ‘made his name’ more recently by replacing John Parrott as a captain on A Question of Sport, winning Celebrity Masterchef, losing in the final of Strictly Come Dancing to Mark Ramprakash and advertising fish for Birdseye.
A stunning CV I’m sure you’ll agree and one ideally suited to landing a job presenting a horseracing programme on terrestrial television.

He’s essentially an ex-mainstream sportsman who is now being wheeled out at every available opportunity, no matter what the role. In this case it’s backfired spectacularly, with Dawson looking rather like Guy Goma when he was mistaken for an IT expert and interviewed live on BBC News 24.
It will comes as no surprise that he’s fairly chummy with the upper echelons of society – his appearances on AQoS alongside the likes of James Cracknell have been cringeworthy.

Thank you Armchair, for the info on Mr Dawson. My enquiry was totally genuine
never
sarcasm. That is the lowest form of wit, and therefore not for Pinza.]
Next question
(he blushed)
… who is James Cracknell?

Double olympic gold medallist in Rowing (coxless four)
Thanks again, GD. No relation by the sound of it to E.J. (Eddie) Cracknell, a fantastic Australian jockey who rode over here with notable success in the 1950’s and 60’s… also I fear gone to that great weighing room in the sky.

James Cracknell was one of ‘the other two’ that partnered Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent to Olympic glory in 2000, retaining the title (less Redgrave) four years later.
Since retiring from the open and accessible sport of rowing – I’m afraid I do do sarcasm – he seems to spend much of his time in the company of Ben ‘Daddy Said I’d Never Need A Real Job’ Fogle.
To his credit he does do a lot of work for charity and regularly tests himself against all that mother nature has to offer. In recent years he has rowed across the Atlantic (with Fogle), raced to the South Pole (with Fogle), ridden a rickshaw from Edinburgh to London (with Fogle) and covered in excess of 1400 miles in 10 days (rowing, swimming and cycling) travelling from the UK to Africa.
I believe he fractured his skull recently when knocked off his bike by an American truck driver whilst making his way from Los Angeles to New York (another swim, run, cycle and row affair).
July 28, 2010 at 23:37 #309546I just figured out how they ended up with this guy. They are discussing the future of their racing slot at C4 HQ, and the tea boy chirps up whilst serving up the boardroom cuppas and says "You know what we should do is gazzump that cheesy guy with the pin-stripe suit from ATR, Matt
[snaps fingers for clarity]
… Matt … wass his name now?"
Hence they accidentally ended up with Matt Dawson
That is the only thing I can think of. Surely it wasn’t a deliberate decision to have him fronting C4 racing. Surely not …?July 28, 2010 at 23:51 #309551
