A couple of questions for the experts: –
Artemis
, you mention the Lucky 15 is available some places with a triple bonus for a single winner, which also as you say does make the bet attractive. I have run through the web sites of those with which I hold small accounts and can find no mention of such a promotion. Is this only available at the shops/offices and if so do you know which ones?
Formath
, simply out of complete curiosity I must ask you, how do you write out the betting slip for the SENSIBLE PERM? I would think this must be impossible to enter on line or can you tell me otherwise?

, after much Gooooogling I have found BetFred is the triple bonus bookie with whom I do not have an account because Best Odds are not offered but then again I guess it is too much to ask for a triple bonus plus Best Odds. Do you know of any othere?

October 3, 2009 at 13:35 #251440When I wrote ‘sensible perm’ I meant the one I had posted but not explained very well….
Hi Alan, yeah I worked out something was wrong…not that it matters I’d still of done me bollocks either way so don’t worry your still on the Chirstmas card list

Billion, one thing to note about any bonuses is that they are only paid when all the runners run. I only mention it as you can more or less guarantee the first time you bag a sole 20/1 winner it will be accompianed with a non-runner
October 3, 2009 at 13:56 #251455Thanks for that snippet
Pompete
, I had not decided to go that route but all info is wisdom. Today I have 4 selections but remain faithful to my 6 x ew doubles only.
Today’s Banker
whilst we are on the subject of Mail & Sun tipsters I will mention I have intermittently followed the naps of Templegate & Tom Pepper when they both select the same horse for their daily nap, which has happend today plus it is also backed up by the in form Captain Heath: –

Yes, our final bet of 5pts goes on Sirvino, talk about risky
.By the way I am not an expert but an old codger who fancies himself as an armchair form assessor
.I apologise for making the ‘sensible’ 6 selection perm seem so complicated – it’s the way I tell ’em
.
It’s not a one-liner like a yankee or a lucky 15, either has to be written out in full or with a key. I have assessed the Newmarket card today for the perm omitting the 3.40 too many runners, and we have taken Sirvino already (I would go 1. Almiqdad 2. Charm School 3. Sirvino).
Newmarket – (others are shown in brackets)
1.50 Lily Langtry (Dubai heights, Jira)
2.25 Alfred Nobel (Markazzi, Society Rock)
3.00 Ghanaati (Fantasia, Strawberry Daiquiri)
4.15 Paleo (Cash Queen Anna, Bab At The Bowster)
4.50 Intense (Something, Dhaular Dhar)
5.25 Lochiel (Tinaar, Senses)Bets Key:
Doubles 12, 23, 34, 45, 56
Trebles 135, 136, 146, 246
Accumulators 1256, 2345October 4, 2009 at 00:03 #251553Hey
Formath
any one who can score 3 at Newmarket is a winner in my book I think HQ is just about one of the hardest places to find winners.
How did they fit into the perm?

for Sunday
Today’s selection Formath looks to be one I will swerve and save for Monday.
PRESS THE BUTTON at Huntingdon looks far too short for me at the early prices.

October 4, 2009 at 12:46 #251653billion,
The ‘sensible’ perm was 13 points down after two attempts and the ‘running yankee’ was 11 points down after 4 days. It may not seem too good but a couple more winners could have made a massive difference – so no reason to give up on them, yet!
Gimcrack is the D Mail tipster of choice this week for the yankee, starting tomorrow.October 4, 2009 at 13:38 #251664The ‘sensible’ perm for Sunday
, as per the key posted previously:
Huntingdon
2.10 Tritonville Lodge
2.45 Bergo
3.20 Masool
3.50 Armenian Boy
4.25 Press The Button
5.00 Amazing ValourOctober 4, 2009 at 21:33 #251809We all know by experience that multiple betting is only for entertainment and that you are going to lose in the long run. Somewhere there will be a few very lucky people who hit the jackpot as in a lottery.
Given that there is little hope of profit, it seems to me that you should try to maximise the entertainment aspect. This precludes backing short-priced favourites where returns are small but limit your losses.
There are profits to be made from multiple betting on a very long term basis. You have to be willing to go months of losses before landing a big one. One key point for me of a yankee or luck 15 is to never bet short odds. Shortest I ever back is around 4-1 in such bets and I always do them each way. One winning acca per year will mean you make a healthy profit….unless you are just crap at selecting horses!
October 4, 2009 at 22:22 #251818Hi ho
Douginho
.
An interesting post with a couple of valid points.
a) this is ALL about improvement with regard to selecting horses and my guess is most of us here fall into the
crap
section otherwise we would be sitting on an exotic beach and it sure would not be Blackpool or Margate.
b) I am sure each way bets really must be the answer whilst waiting the big one which will provide those small returns to encourage us along the way. 4/1 sounds about right in handicaps returning 1/4 and 5/1 otherwise is a good rule to adopt.
Artemis
I had my first (paper) attempt to use your suggestions and not to be discounted it showed some promise. Excuse me when I say that because I do believe with all these suggestions they mostly have to be slightly adapted to fit within your own individual MO. I had far too many possibles, even though it was half way through the days racing but did manage to get down to four and ended up with 2 good places at 7/1 & 13/2 which again strengthens the argument put forward by
Douginho
.
The next time I give it another go I will perhaps select a) handicaps only or smaller fields. b)look towards the shorter end of the prices i.e. 5/1 – 8/1. Implementing these measures I hope will reduce any selections to my maximum of 4 or 5.
Formath
, two may have been short prices but again 3 winners, well done.

The first leg of the yankee today for Gimcrack is 8 points of the 16 staked on Pontefract 2.40 Shibhan. On another matter, you mentioned golden oldies and each-way doubles. So, here is an idea from a letter to the Sporting Chronicle forum, dated Sep 29, 1967.
Check races of 8/12 runners where the Fav is forecast to go off at 5/2 or longer.
Take the first 3 in the betting forecast of 2 such races and back them for 9 each-way crossed doubles. The correspondent reckons he made a profit each year for the past 20 years working this system.
October 5, 2009 at 13:40 #251912billion,
Just had a look at the D Mail betting forecast and the Pontefract 2.40 & 4.40 look suitable for 9 each-way crossed doubles – 2.40 Yaa Wayl, Lava Lamp, Shibhan X 4.40 Silent Act, Regal Lyric, Oriental Cavalier. Finally, in a previous post you mentioned the problem of working out the bets required for a perm. Well I have a copy from June 1974 of ‘The Sporting Investor CALCULATOR for safer bets’, scanned on file, which is quite comprehensive. If you, or anyone else, would like a copy just PM with an email address and I will send a copy.

Formath
,
This thread is for me just getting better and better.
I believe the true aficionado of betting could easily frown upon such ideas but you only have to go to any horse race meeting to witness a full cross section of society and therefore believe is a place for us all.
I will do my best to try and watch your latest suggestion, I always think you quickly get a feel for such bets and/or selections as to if it suits your own style. The big advantage we have today over those in the sixties is we can place 3 such bets with 3 different layers picking thge best available odds.
I am ending my Goodfellow sequence today with JUST LILLE 3.40 Pontefract, small odds of 6/4 but is closes the sequence.
I am going to try my idea of a combined list vs yours of the Daily Mail just to see how it gets on and will try to post them each day for a period.
My combined list is: –
Goodfellow – Gimcrack – Captain Heath – Tom Pepper (Sun) – Pegasus (N.O.W/Sun)
I start today with The Captain, in truth it should have been Gimcrack but there was so little between them I switched just to be competitive.
SYDNEY MELBOURNE 4.20 Warwick
I have picked 2 from the
Artemis
suggestion which are Kenyan Cat 4.20 Warwick & Non Dom 5.00 Windsor and combined them with 2 from the idea via
Mulls74
Bel Cantor 2.20 Warwick & Bush Master 4.00 Windsor as 6 small e/w doubles

,
I got my knickers in a twist again getting too excited but of course you cannot select 3 different layers but at least you can go with the one offering the best odds.
I have looked at Odds Checker and as always eality differs from the guesswork of forecasts. I have found 4 such races (there was 5 but 4 were handicaps offering 1/4 odds): –
2.30 Windsor fav 5/1
3.30 Windsor fav 11/4
2.50 Warwick fav 4/1
4.40 Pontefract fav 5/2These are early odds and can change but the logic remains as 5/2 being the shortest at any given time.
I was going to punt my "sixpences" but am know left dithering and so will wait for a day when there are only two such races or until a reduction method is found prcticle such as the races with the fewest runners or taking the two with either the biggest or lowest priced favourite etc.
