In my opinion there are a few who are too willing to excuse the ride.
Yes, he was unlucky in running, but was undoubtedly caught napping today and was outridden from the front.
The horse, to his credit, did battle today, and almost got Russell out of a hole of his own making.January 27, 2018 at 22:49 #1339522Horse would have finished further behind than he did if he was more prominently ridden, as ive said before he needs a wall to aim at or he just goes backwards, needs to get his head infront literally on the line, if davy had put him infront of the two he squeezed through before that, they would have undoubtably passed him.
Because he was the best horse/ best handicapped or whatever in a race does not hide from the fact that he needs to be ridden one way only and that way is how it was done today.
Was it a “perfect ride” probably not
But it definitely was the correct ride.January 27, 2018 at 23:01 #1339523Did the horse battle or just travel past beaten horses?
Once he got into the thick end of the race two out he was bang in line with the eventual winner Wakanda. Wakanda battled on and wanted to win, L’ami did not.
January 27, 2018 at 23:15 #1339525so can only leave others to speculate whether Davy Russell was the best man for the job today.

January 27, 2018 at 23:16 #1339526Imo i agree with you, he just passed beaten horses because the way he was put into the race. If the race went another half furlong, he would have been likely further behind, its just what he does when pressured.
January 27, 2018 at 23:32 #1339531He never got to the front, nor was given a chance to.
I never bet in the race, but , although no doubt, riding to instructions, he simply misjudged it.
Not sure the connections will be delighted.January 27, 2018 at 23:55 #1339535Pocket-talking morons who come out chastising jockeys after they’ve lost a bet are the worst people associated with racing.
January 28, 2018 at 09:28 #1339555I don’t suppose even God could have foreseen those traffic problems at the business end of a gruelling slog.
January 28, 2018 at 09:40 #1339559L’ami Serge does not want to be in front; just look at his races over hurdles this year, so you can’t blame Russell for riding to orders and holding on for as long as possible.
He didn’t hold on for as long as possible, though. Jacob did that in the Long Walk. Here, Russell is panicking at the bottom of the straight.

I’ve criticised this ride as much as anyone and I backed Flying Angel.
January 28, 2018 at 11:05 #1339568He responded to pressure all the way up the straight, Ham, and would have won in another half a furlong.
January 28, 2018 at 11:47 #1339575In responding to The Gun’s somewhat irreverent comments regarding other posters, I would add that I have also criticised the ride, and didn’t even have a bet in the race. No pocket talking here mate !
January 28, 2018 at 12:02 #1339578I didn’t back L’ami Serge but it was a poor ride by Davy. Everyone knows that LS finds little under pressure and he leaves him with 6/7 lengths to find turning in. Left with too much to do. Rarely get’s in wrong Davy, think he is great.
January 28, 2018 at 12:44 #1339583I’m not a pocket talker since I rarely back the jolly. But if you carry that much money, you carry some responsibility as well. The horse always comes first and I’m okay with that, but he should have been a lot closer to the front given his high cruising speed.
January 28, 2018 at 13:14 #1339587Come on people, L’ami Serge jumped the last fence level with the winner. So how can you bemoan the jockey?
January 28, 2018 at 15:46 #1339605Sorry but Russell is not my cup of tea and IMO he gave the horse a poor ride. When it’s won it’s races it’s always been in front at the last, I don’t think it needs to be held up to the last minute and indeed Ruby Walsh said on ITV in the morning when Matt was saying that it needed holding up til the last minute to pounce he said that was rubbish and if him he would be in front and kick for home 2 out. I agree with Ruby.

Wakanda lagged before rallying again. L’ami Serge jumped the last two lengths behind the 2nd placed horse, who he eventually lost to by a nose.
