Approaching the 3rd last he decided to finally put the horse into the race. Not suggesting he would have won, but he should have been a lot closer under a more vigorous ride.
January 27, 2018 at 15:27 #1339441Extremely harsh IMO.
January 27, 2018 at 15:32 #1339443Bridal horse, doesn’t do much for being ridden

January 27, 2018 at 15:33 #1339444I don’t think it’s harsh at all. The horse was carrying a lot of money and he gave it too much to do from 7 out. It was picking up between the last three fences, but had too much ground to make up. Obviously if I’d be a bookie I’d defend Davy.
January 27, 2018 at 15:56 #1339452Lami Serge is a total rogue and anyone who backed him at a win only price deserves to lose their money. I thought Davy did very well to give him a fighting chance coming to the line.
January 27, 2018 at 16:06 #1339455Indeed. Held up (as usual), made two bad mistakes plus a few niggly ones, looked awkward and ran around under pressure up the straight, looked held until late rally, just failed.
What more can you do with a pig like Lamby? It’s gonna look ugly no matter what you do with him. As thewexfordman says, goondolonces to anyone who took short odds.
January 27, 2018 at 16:28 #1339458He got stuck in behind horses coming back on him just before the home turn and that lost him vital ground, to be fair to the horse I thought he kept on well for pressure as I always thought as soon as he comes off the bridle he bottles it. That being said in 27 runs he has only finished out of the places three times.
Those type of horses more often than not make you look like a dodgy rider when you get the tactics even slightly wrong because there is such a fine margin of error that you are working with to deliver them at the right time, no doubt had he got up to win he would have been receiving high praise for the ride by most people.
Can understand the fraustration for those backing him but with the type of horse he has always been that is part and parcel of what you have to except when plonking your money on him.
January 27, 2018 at 17:28 #1339468They went steady, then picked up the pace as they turned for home and by the time Dave Russell realised what had happened he was already six lengths behind the horses who beat him by a head. He’s then riding the horse down the straight to get him into a position – not something you often see Jacob needing to do, because L’ami Serge is a horse who travels well into his races – and full credit to the horse for running on well at the end.
I’ve got all the time in the world for him as a jockey, but he was on by far the best horse in the race, who was backed off the boards, and he failed to give him a chance to win. In my opinion, if he wasn’t on what can be a sometimes quirky horse he’d be facing a lot more criticism than he has done.

It’s good to have a laugh now and again. Thanks Nathan for this one. Whether a deliberate piece of comedy for suggesting the horse is only suitable for carrying a bride to her wedding, or an accidental slip of the keyboard. I did once see a bride being brought to her wedding venue in the front bucket of a JCB. I hope her prospective spouse didn’t bridle at the demonstration of who held all the power in the relationship.
January 27, 2018 at 17:55 #1339473Oooops, yeah a typo on my behalf Marginal….
L’ami Serge more a bridesmaid a bit like Arsene Wenger, looks like being on the verge of victory before downing tools, I’d have more trust in a door to door salesman who’s opening line is ‘I’ll only take a minute of your time’ lol. The horse did show more fighting spirit today and although not the greatest ride in Russell’s history I’m sure tactics would have been to produce the horse late in the day, a few in running issues didn’t help the cause.
As for Wengers 100 year plan, building for future, where in the blueprint does it say let all the players run their contracts down to nothing……

January 27, 2018 at 18:11 #1339477I agree with those who think it was a poor ride by Russell. Far from being a bridle horse, L’Ami Serge kept giving under pressure today. Crucially, when the race finished the horse looked like he still had more to give and was never nearer. He would have won in another 100yds. Returning to chasing, L’Ami Serge was not fluent. Nobody more so than Russell knew this so, knowing his mount would continue to lose ground at the fences in the straight, he needed to start asking the horse a bit earlier.
January 27, 2018 at 18:17 #1339480100% a rogue. Davy is damned if he goes sooner & damned if he waits and suffers. He got unlucky getting stopped quite a few times but going left at every fence and not being fluent doesn’t help the horse or the jock.
January 27, 2018 at 18:25 #1339483You can sit and wait on a horse without giving it six lengths to make up turning for home – Jacob is an absolute master at it. This wasn’t “rogue” L’ami today. He actually fought on quite well down the straight.
I’ve watched it back another two times since. He is unlucky in stages when hampered a couple of times, but how he lets the race get away from him like he did was just poor.
January 27, 2018 at 18:36 #1339485I really don’t think Russell had a choice. Lamby has to be held-up and put himself further back with the mistakes. Russell isn’t able to control the pace in front of him. He was unlucky to find a few slow ones dropping back in front of him when stuck on the rail, but those are the breaks when you’re riding a screwball like that.
I don’t think he battled per se. Carried his head very awkwardly when asked to make ground and, like many ‘ballticklers’, only closed up late as others tired.
It’s the sort of ride that would have had everyone whooping and calling for Russell to get ‘Ride of the Season’ if he’d just got up to win by a nose. A length further back and he’s being compared to an amateur jockey. People are too results-oriented.
January 27, 2018 at 19:04 #1339494He does have to be held up, and I know Russell doesn’t control the pace, but that’s not the point I’m making. The point I’m making is that he misjudged the pace of the race and left the horse’s challenge too late.
If he had got up to win that, I would be saying Russell is lucky the horse pulled it out of the bag. L’ami Serge was given no realistic chance to win that race today, despite clearly being the best horse in it.
January 27, 2018 at 20:23 #1339510L’ami Serge does not want to be in front; just look at his races over hurdles this year, so you can’t blame Russell for riding to orders and holding on for as long as possible.
It’s not the jockey’s fault he was riding an enigma that doesn’t want to get his head in front.

It’s good to have a laugh now and again. Thanks Nathan for this one.
I had a giggle at that one as well.
I looked at the betting for the race earlier in the week and thought L’ami Serge was way short at 3/1 given his overall profile and previous failures. What can you say about 13/8 Fav ?
In the spirit of Nathan’s spelling, we should all just draw a veil over the unfortunate affair. The price was virgin on the ridiculous anyway.
I didn’t see the race myself, so can only leave others to speculate whether Davy Russell was the best man for the job today.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
