exactly why i NEVER back a horse ridden by Mccoy! Always hassling a horse into a fence. No wonder he wont get the Kauto ride in the king george and has been jocked off Denman

He rode the race to suit the horse. Alberta’s Run needs to be kept away from other horses to show his best. AP kept the horse wide. AR is proven at 2 1/2 miles and stays 3 miles well (King George placed). Yet his two main rivals, Master Minded and Imsingingtheblues were far from certain to stay 2m3f. It is in the best interests of Alberta’s Run to make sure it was a stiff test of stamina at this trip. So you Dave, want AP to just let AR pop his fences at a slow pace?!
Had AP done that, it would’ve ended up a sprint for home; which the 2 milers Master Minded and Imsingingtheblues stood a much better chance of winning than the "stayer" Alberta’s Run.Denman was not AP’s ride anyway, at the time of the AON Thomas had fallen out with Nicholls. Which led to AP riding him. Now Thomas is back in the Nicholls fold it is totally right he gets back on Denman. And it is exactly the right thing that Fehily gets the ride on Kauto, as he’s done well on Nicholls/Smith runners recently.
Alberta’s Run fell. No fault of AP.
You "never back McCoy"? You must miss an awful lot of winners then Dave.
Value Is EverythingNovember 20, 2010 at 16:42 #328901It is obvious from the absence of a noseband (shadow roll) that Nicholls believes MM no longer needs the aid of something to bring his head down. The wind op has apparently worked. Am on @ 6’s, the form is suspect and doubt we will ever see as good a performance as his first QM. But he does not need to be anywhere near that form to win at Cheltenham. However, the way he travelled and jumped throughout the race today is a great sign wind problems are behing him. Wish mine were.

Hope he doesn’t race too often and not in heavy ground. These ops generally have a limited time span. Tingle Creek then a gap before Game Spirit and Champion Chase. That’ll do.
Value Is EverythingNovember 20, 2010 at 16:50 #328905You dont need to boot a horse into every fence when setting a blistering gallop, watch some horsemen on front runners, RW, BG, NF, TM.
I might miss winners not backing him but using my system he was one of my biggest loosing joks falling or unseating on too many of my selections. Altho i except some follow him almost blindly.
Glad the horse got up and he actually made it easier for me to collect!November 20, 2010 at 16:53 #328906very impressive, jumped well, but it looked like a poor race, esp when Alberta’s Run fell. AR was under pressure, but he does respond.
Delighted AP is OK, he really hurled AR into the fence.November 20, 2010 at 17:00 #328910Alberta’s was flat out and looking guessy at the last couple of fences before putting down and falling. But couldn’t see that AP did anything wrong.
Good to see him get up OK, and the same for AP; 3 falls in a day no fun at all…

Terrific run by Master Minded, where he showed all his old speed and fluency, and had the race sewn up before Albertas came down.
3/1 looks a very fair price for the Champion Chase, and no reason yet for him to be campaigned over further (as mooted by PN afterwards).November 20, 2010 at 21:05 #328936Terrific run by Master Minded, where he showed all his old speed and fluency, and had the race sewn up before Albertas came down.

Nicholls has hinted Master Minded may be aimed at 2011 King George. This win today has opened doors for him.
Kauto started off as a 2
miler, is Master Minded his heir apparent? What price the 2012 Gold Cup?
You heard it here first!November 20, 2010 at 21:19 #328939I laid MasterMinded, fair play to Nicholls/Fehily, and they and the horse were in tremendous form today, just oozed class.

You heard it here first! So Nicholls has hinted publicly that Master Minded will be stepped up in trip, but we heard it from you first? In any case, I put him up as a future Gold Cup winner in March 2008 and was generally laughed at (probably with good reason – I seem to recall one member offering me odds of 100,000/1).

Too much supposition for my liking really but having had a wind operation I suspect the trip will not be a problem now. To my eyes the notion he may be a ‘short runner’ stamina-wise based on last year’s capitulations did appear more likely to be caused by a respiritory ailment based on change in head-carriage.
Spot on, Drone, so it would appear.
As one who had him down as a short runner, prior to yesterday, it certainly looks like time for a complete rethink.November 21, 2010 at 10:31 #329023Not conclusive proof yesterday that he would get 19/20f if pressed, but the way he glided up the Ascot straight off what seemed a sound pace certainly suggests it’s highly likely. I guess the real point is whether he’d be as good at an extended trip than at 2m. To my eyes, given his enthusiasm and neat clever jumping, he’s made for the minimum at least for this season and personally I’d relish him being targeted at the Tingle Creek/Chandler/Champion treble
Shame Alberta’s Run fell but appeared very well held when departing, which on the assumption that he was running up to his 160+ best implies MM has broken the 170 tape again. The assumption AR did run to form is probably best taken with a small pinch of salt though. Despite his G1 double last year he is not a horse I warm to at all, and as such not one to rely on as a yardstick or slide-rule hewn from oak
November 21, 2010 at 10:41 #329027Interesting that they want a tilt at the King George in 2011 with Master Minded.
November 21, 2010 at 11:18 #329031I still remain unconvinced that Master Minded is going to find a great deal if and when he’s asked to battle. Maybe Nicholls has managed to sweeten him up but I still think he’s a horse that isn’t totally in love with the game. 3/1 for the Champion Chase is skinny enough.
November 21, 2010 at 11:35 #329036Its a shame that as soon as a horse blots his copybook the vultures start circling,i have said it before that when a horse makes you sit up and say Wow as
Master Minded
did one day at Newbury, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt and as it transpires that The Masters problems were all physical i for one cant oppose him,My way de solzen on the other hand had issues in his head and that finished him! Dont get me started on
Tidal Bay
!!!
November 21, 2010 at 11:42 #329038I’m probably in the minority here but I for one thought Alberta’s Run had a good bit left in the tank when he departed. McCoy was starting to squeeze him but the 2 mile 3 furlong trip is on the lower end of his scale. I’ve little doubt he would have kept going all the way to the line. It’s a great pity he exited the race because it would have been interesting to see how easily Master Minded may/may not have beaten him
November 21, 2010 at 11:55 #329042I agree with you thm…….. You are in the minority!
November 21, 2010 at 16:36 #329113AR wouldn’t have stood a prayer had he stayed upright. The going was just softer than what he’s comfortable on and he was beginning to feel it. One drop of rain less and AR runs a complete different race.
Even on proper good ground, he’d have probably been no match for the MM that turned up yesterday IMO.
